I once designed and managed a leadership potential assessment program at a large chemical company. most assessed were chemistry, chem eng majors in first 5-7 years of their careers. this was real-time, in person assessments. highly valid predictor of leadership success later in career. I secretly kept track of how the Harvard MBA's did. I forget why. anyway, they were no different than everyone else in terms of demonstrable leadership traits. Harvard MBA is greatest marketing coup in history.
I also used to work for a very large, global chemical company (Dow) and knew from fairly early on that the company seemed to be really impressed with MBA grads and really like ones from Harvard. I worked for a Harvard MBA whose undergraduate degree was in Electrical Engineering and the MBA from Harvard. HIs first job was in a position where he was set up to succeed and had mentors to help him along. He was transferred to the Pacific Area and according to the people I knew in HK and Spore I learned he was an arrogant disaster and pissed off a lot of important customers before the company decided to send him back to the US. As you probably can tell I was never overly impressed with many of the MBA grads because they were set up to succeed and most of them thought they should be the CEO by the time they were 35 and held no long term allegiance to the company even tho the management bent over backwards to cater to them. But..... I was blessed to work for the company and went a lot further than a poor white boy from Ohio ever expected and got to meet a lot of great people all over the world as customers and as co-workers.

My only encounter with a Harvard grad was in the basement of 61 Broadway (NYC), the securities vault operation for State Street Bank & Trust (which ran everything on a shoe-string. 1986-87). Chaos, almost every single day. He could not have been more down to earth and helpful. I wonder what ever happened to him.

It was sad to see that Trump came to some agreement with Harvard. All of the "Ivy League" schools need to be shut down. At the entrance to the school, there was a stone monument that said "A Christian college of liberal arts." In the 1980's, they sandblasted this off. Oh god, it's so true and as a woman myself I could not agree more. But I tend to have more manish qualities being a not so sensitive, practical gal myself and all. I'd at least consider giving up the vote just to get rid of the (at least) 60% of my sex that clearly think with whatever is in their assholes.

I am a woman who used to be a lefty feminist. Even as a young woman I hated working for women. Not all but most cannot separate personal issues from work issues. Shitshows generally follow. I am 62 now and I struggle with misogyny. I don't enjoy writing this but as a society, if we wish to continue on in a non shitshow fashion, we need to dispense with the feminist BS.
Impatient, I oversee a department of 12 individuals. 5 of the individuals are female and 7 are male. I monitor accrued annual leave for each of the employees to make sure that they aren't accruing too much leave as the business must carry the balance of those hours in our coffers. It is fascinating to look at the balance accrual differences between the females and the males. The males all average an accrual balance of 220 hours. The females? One has 42, another has 28, another has 60. They average an accrual balance of about 35 hours. All of them have as much time or more in the business as their male counterparts. So what gives?
My theory? The females don't want to work and they use up all their annual leave as fast as they accrue it. The males? They prefer to work and don't use their annual leave. I kid you not. I have one male employee with less than 200 hours accrued and he has 170.
Then again, maybe these men just work all the time because they don't want to be home with a nagging wife ;)
There's a lot of commentary about how much men have been hurt by feminism, but as a man, I'd argue that it has actually hurt women so much more. Most of the women I know, and those I see in public life, seem to be deeply confused and angry. This is not to let men off the hook, but I think women are in a bad place right now.
So what changed? Your acquisition of wisdom is glaringly obvious. We are wired for our roles in life from conception, so it is no wonder that folks go nutso when that wiring is traumatically changed. Think PTSD, now think about women that are “forced” to be men, power wise.

Attending Harvard isn't about education, its about the connections it affords you. My cousin went there and immediately into a defense contractor where he makes over $1 million per year.
My brother could have gone to Harvard, but on his visit he found the people insufferably arrogant and unserious (no doubt because they had it made due to being Harvard students). He didn't go there for those reasons. OTOH, when I was in grad school down South I was once allowed into a hot club without having to pay the cover charge simply for wearing a Harvard shirt.

The millennials were raised by Gen X to absolutely believe that a college eduction was a requirement to achieve happiness in life. Gen X got it from the Boomers. The result? Out of line tuition, Hugh stadia, lousy made up curricula, student debt that is impossible to service, and a huge group of middle aged and youthful folks that are finding out that they have been duped and blame it on America, the population that have fed them this line of BS ever since they were kids.
America needs about 20-30% of any generation to be higher educated to fill the jobs that need the “smarts”. What happens when 60% of kids go to college? Easy, just look around.

Not all of the millennial generation are born to and raised by Gen Xers. Some of them, many of them, are children of the Baby Boomer generation.

I contend the 17th amendment greatly damaged the institution as devised by the Founders. Senators were to be the state's monitors in DC chosen by the state legislature. Now, outside big money can come in and elect the preferred candidate of outside interests with the interests of the individual state no longer even considered.

During the original Constitutional Convention there was a fierce debate between the Federalists (Washington, Hamilton, ETC) and the States Rights delegation (Jefferson, Madison, ETC). Ultimately, they came to a compromise. The Federalists got the Presidency. The States Rights people got the Senate. The American Citizen got the House of Representatives. Each had some form of Representation.
After Abe Lincoln overthrew the Constitution of 1788 with his illegal war on the southern states, the door was open to destroying the balance of power between the Federalists, the States and the People. Along comes that sick fucker Woodrow Wilson and bam, suddenly the States have no representation and the Senate becomes nothing more than a bickering club of old has-beens and a glorified House of Representatives. Now the balance is gone. The people have the Senate and the House. The Federalists have everything else.
The States become impotent, nothing more than just administrative jurisdictions. Since then the House and Senate no longer represent the people, all of them paid off to campaign contributors and special interests.

I disagree. Unless the behavior/expression is illegal for other reasons (physical assault, etc.), it is a free speech issue and, yes, an education issue. The arguably universal value in it (for others, but in particular Harvard students) is allowing awareness of others' minds -- and, for that reason alone, it cannot be written off as having "no redeeming value".
From Harvard's POV, the normative should never enter into it. The problem I see in this case is that the university (too many all of them) routinely "whore" themselves out for fame, fortune, and of course, woke evangelism. Instead of publicizing it, it should have been completely a sober-minded Harvard-community activity. Then they could have explored, among many other things, the dramatic as well as any psychological aspects Jim alludes to. Instead, it's all showbiz and propaganda, and *that's* the ugly and stupid part for a once-great place like Harvard.

Studying something is not honoring it. That's one of the big ways the academic establishment lost its way, conflating the normative with the positive. They should have found a way of keeping students conscious of which is which, and knowing how to behave with each. But as the academy was hijacked, the ringleaders have been doing the opposite.

His salary was $300,000 per year, which was based upon his credentials, which turn out to be totally fake. I once designed and managed a leadership potential assessment program at a large chemical company. most assessed were chemistry, chem eng majors in first 5-7 years of their careers. this was real-time, in person assessments. highly valid predictor of leadership success later in career. I secretly kept track of how the Harvard MBA's did. I forget why. anyway, they were no different than everyone else in terms of demonstrable leadership traits. Harvard MBA is greatest marketing coup in history.
I also used to work for a very large, global chemical company (Dow) and knew from fairly early on that the company seemed to be really impressed with MBA grads and really like ones from Harvard. I worked for a Harvard MBA whose undergraduate degree was in Electrical Engineering and the MBA from Harvard. HIs first job was in a position where he was set up to succeed and had mentors to help him along. He was transferred to the Pacific Area and according to the people I knew in HK and Spore I learned he was an arrogant disaster and pissed off a lot of important customers before the company decided to send him back to the US. As you probably can tell I was never overly impressed with many of the MBA grads because they were set up to succeed and most of them thought they should be the CEO by the time they were 35 and held no long term allegiance to the company even tho the management bent over backwards to cater to them. But..... I was blessed to work for the company and went a lot further than a poor white boy from Ohio ever expected and got to meet a lot of great people all over the world as customers and as co-workers.
All the MBAs and PhDs I know took the Jab. Nuff said.

It was sad to see that Trump came to some agreement with Harvard. All of the "Ivy League" schools need to be shut down. No college or university should be allowed to exist unless it is affiliated with a real, Christian church. At the entrance to the school, there was a stone monument that said "A Christian college of liberal arts." In the 1980's, they sandblasted this off. I am a woman who used to be a lefty feminist. Even as a young woman I hated working for women. Not all but most cannot separate personal issues from work issues. Shitshows generally follow. I am 62 now and I struggle with misogyny. I don't enjoy writing this but as a society, if we wish to continue on in a non shitshow fashion, we need to dispense with the feminist BS.
Impatient, I oversee a department of 12 individuals. 5 of the individuals are female and 7 are male. I monitor accrued annual leave for each of the employees to make sure that they aren't accruing too much leave as the business must carry the balance of those hours in our coffers. It is fascinating to look at the balance accrual differences between the females and the males. The males all average an accrual balance of 220 hours. The females? One has 42, another has 28, another has 60. They average an accrual balance of about 35 hours. All of them have as much time or more in the business as their male counterparts. So what gives?
My theory? The females don't want to work and they use up all their annual leave as fast as they accrue it. The males? They prefer to work and don't use their annual leave. I kid you not. I have one male employee with less than 200 hours accrued and he has 170.
Then again, maybe these men just work all the time because they don't want to be home with a nagging wife ;)
There's a lot of commentary about how much men have been hurt by feminism, but as a man, I'd argue that it has actually hurt women so much more. Most of the women I know, and those I see in public life, seem to be deeply confused and angry. This is not to let men off the hook, but I think women are in a bad place right now.

People pay it because they WANT to go there even though their endowment is large enough that each student could attend that University tuition free on the interest that endowment earns alone. Doesn't matter. They charge those rates because the suckers will come and pay it. They'll get into debt that they can never repay because they WANT to go there.

The millennials were raised by Gen X to absolutely believe that a college eduction was a requirement to achieve happiness in life. Gen X got it from the Boomers. The result? Out of line tuition, Hugh stadia, lousy made up curricula, student debt that is impossible to service, and a huge group of middle aged and youthful folks that are finding out that they have been duped and blame it on America, the population that have fed them this line of BS ever since they were kids.
America needs about 20-30% of any generation to be higher educated to fill the jobs that need the “smarts”. What happens when 60% of kids go to college? Easy, just look around.

I disagree. Unless the behavior/expression is illegal for other reasons (physical assault, etc.), it is a free speech issue and, yes, an education issue. The arguably universal value in it (for others, but in particular Harvard students) is allowing awareness of others' minds -- and, for that reason alone, it cannot be written off as having "no redeeming value".
From Harvard's POV, the normative should never enter into it. The problem I see in this case is that the university (too many all of them) routinely "whore" themselves out for fame, fortune, and of course, woke evangelism. Instead of publicizing it, it should have been completely a sober-minded Harvard-community activity. Then they could have explored, among many other things, the dramatic as well as any psychological aspects Jim alludes to.
