Everything makes sense once you realize that approximately half (or more) of the people sitting in Congress--Senate and House both--are not interested in the good of the country and are motivated exclusively by self-interest, which encompasses 1) their retention of power, and 2) personal wealth. They can't have 2) without 1), so they are doing whatever it takes to assure re-election. If that requires importing a new group of voters, that's fine by them. If that means eventual destruction of the country, that's fine as well, because by the time that happens, their personal wealth will have provided them with a handy escape route elsewhere. For the rest of us who can't (or choose not to) leave, that's tough. Sucks to be us.

John Thune and Chuck Shumer are the pointed tips of the turd that is the United States Senate.

Cankerpuss's avatar

The US Senate became impotent when it was taken from the states and given to the people. It is nothing more than a glorified House of Representatives. The 17th amendment should be repealed.

UncleBob9's avatar

Agreed. The IRS and the Fed should be disbanded and the Sixteenth Amendment repealed, as well.

The Most Earnest Man in Canada's avatar

Why stop there? The Second Amendment is a notoriously poorly drafted law, with terrible consequences for American society. You all should get rid of it.

paul Vincent zecchino's avatar

The Second Amendment is not a law. It is a charge against government to never trifle with a standing, God given, inalienable Right.

Stay up north, enjoy your servitude.

The Most Earnest Man in Canada's avatar

Of course it's a law. That's what the U.S. constitution is, the overarching legal document that sets the terms for all law in the USA. Your comment is a shining example of exactly why the second amendment is a bad law: because people don't think of it as a law enacted by men, they think of it as holy scripture.

I'll clue you in on something: the people of the USA are no threat to its government. If they were, would Trump, Rubio, Hegseth and the rest have dared to start a war with Iran after campaigning against foreign wars? They do these things because they understand there is no threat to them no matter how much they lie to the rubes. And if they ever do really feel threatened, no one in power will give half a second's thought to any provision of the constitution, second amendment or otherwise. They'll just gun you down in the street and saying "fucking bitch" afterward. We saw it happen very recently in Minneapolis. That was them, demonstrating the truth of what I'm saying. They just dress it up as being about illegal aliens because that plays so well with the rubes. It's about you, the second you really step out of line.

Poorly drafted in what way?

The Most Earnest Man in Canada's avatar

Start with the dependent clause: "A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State". Does the word 'state' refer to any particular one of the thirteen original colonies (the states)? To each of them severally, to all of them together? Does it refer to the State as a concept, meaning government in general? That would have to include the federal government as well. It's far from clear which particular, discrete entity or entities the word is meant to refer to. That's poor drafting: ambiguity, uncertainty, doubt.

Notice also that this is in the context of "the security of" a "free state". By what textual evidence (I mean the actual words on paper, not your personal interpretation) does that mean the people of that state, i.e. the security of ordinary citizens? It would make at least as much sense, perhaps more, to say it means the security of the state, which could very well mean its security against its own citizens. By the 19th century, there were "free states" as opposed to "slave states", where slavery was practised. Could this have been interpreted to mean the constitution protected free states against the slave states? I know how dumb that sounds, but language is slippery and lawyers are relentless. Everyone benefits when the law is clear. There's nothing on paper to say what the vague phrase "security of a free state" is meant to protect and what it isn't. More poor drafting: more ambiguity, uncertainty, doubt.

Now the main clause: "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Historically, the phrase "the people" has a particular meaning in the USA. If you get charged with littering, your case will be constituted as "The People vs. Cosmo T Kat". Here "the people" means the prosecution, representing the public interest in punishing antisocial conduct. The wording of the second amendment doesn't make clear whether "the people" means "the public interest", which is safeguarded by government, or if it means ordinary people's right to keep and bear arms. Obviously plenty of people think it does mean the latter, but I repeat, that's their interpretation. What's on paper doesn't make it clear one way or the other. That's a poorly drafted law.

wkenn's avatar

Absolutely. It exists in present form not in the manner laboriously negotiated through the traditionally hot and humid summer months in Philadelphia.

It could (the Convention) be described as a 'sort of coup', because the original intent was to fix the Articles of Confederation. After some attempts they scrapped the Articles and started over.

The House of Representatives was a popularly elected body whose seats were based on population. The Senate was designed to be an equalizer. It was to be controlled by the individual state legislatures who would choose and send two Senators each to the bicameral legislative body.

This is often referred to as the Connecticut Compromise.

Things weren't really going well, the convention almost dissolved. The Compromise (under various names) is considered by many as one which saved the convention.

This compromise not only saved the convention but shaped American federalism by balancing popular sovereignty with state sovereignty.

The Seventeenth Amendment undid this delicate balance.

Cankerpuss's avatar

"Because among all the broken institutions in our country, Congress is the worst."

YES! It is. The US Congress is a failure of epic and colossal proportions. It is an utter joke. The "representatives" who get into Congress are prohibited from thinking for themselves and always vote along party lines, regardless of what their constituents back in their districts want. So these fuckers in Congress spend their time on their committees holding "hearings" where they verbally abuse some poor sucker who answered the summons to come to Congress so they can get a sound byte on Tic Tok or Instagram. They don't listen to each other, they care not about listening to each other. They do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that benefits the American people. I can't think of one thing the failed Congress has done that personally benefits me.

The US Congress is nothing more than a bickering boys and girls club of grifters and criminals.

Americans should be pissing razorblades in anger at the abject failure that is the US Congress. Instead of pointing fingers at Trump, Biden, Obama, and Bush they should be pointing fingers at Congress and demanding more from their legislature. Afterall, Congress controls the purse, Congress makes law (not the President) and Congress can override a Presidential veto.

Unfortunately, so many people are caught up in TDS and BDS that they ignore the gigantic pile of stinking shit that is the US Congress. Congress needs to be reformed from top to bottom. I propose the following:

1. A national lottery of native born net tax paying US citizens.

2. Drafted in said lottery for 1 legislative term consisting of one 3 month legislative session in Washington.

3. Once session is finished, representative returns to their job in their district. No more full time Congressional careers.

4. Increase the size of the Congress to 2,000, 4,000 or more representatives so improve the representation of the people.

Mr. Kunstler blames the SCOTUS when they gave corporations campaign contributions. He's right but I also believe Congress was ruined when legislators became a full time career instead of public service.

Citizens United went the way it did because a) the Supreme Court found that corporations are people 200 years ago, and b) unions and similar organizations had been funding the Democrats for decades, so Citizens United was supposed to level the playing field. Everybody has the capability to be a Nazi of one form or another...... there is no difference making evil decisions about your behavior whether you're wearing a suit and tie or your groveling in the dirt... fucking, killing and eating children..... then burning down their homes.

It won't make a dime's difference when it comes to your judgment that's why you're looking at two groups of losers, and they're gonna be judged for the same crimes you were either the planner or the player none of them get out of here alive..... they're facing eternal death.

To pull off shit like this that's absolutely satanic in nature and it's going to bar you from entering heaven. Not to mention the faith that both of these groups are following is utter horseshit anyway..

One is made up of whole violent cloth plagiarized from the two larger religions before it. The other one is not only forsaking their savior but developing their own God complex.… to rule the world… Like Satan's actually gonna get out of their way that's a laugher. This isn't Babylon part Deux but they can't get their heads out of their asses.

Warren Butterfield's avatar

I find both sides at fault. It certainly does look like a stand down. There's no getting around the information leaking out and the timing alone is insane.

Do not for one minute think that excuses the fucking behavior from the howler monkeys crossing into Israel..... possibly Netanyahu gave them their moment and they sure as fuck went hog wild cause that's who they are..,,. The depravity was off the charts, the eageress to do it, the amount of tools of pure violence they had with them and the creepy shit they were instantaneously doing....... bringing the depths of hell straight up to the surface of the Earth. If you're gonna pick a side here, remember this… One of the few times you can actually believe people who are prone to lying and do it all too easilyis when they show you who they are.

The only thing they didn't do was boil the Jews but more than likely they would tell you they don't taste good. Apparently they missed the email from Epstein.

Here's the good news. Christ is going to have a reckoning with both sides when he comes back.

I wouldn't want to be in their shoes. They'll be shitting themselves senseless when the judgment comes down for their behavior. It's nothing to laugh about. It's nothing to take solace in. It's not our revenge.

Try to imaginary eternity and then see what you're gonna do about. Making sure yours Isn't that horrific… I'll say it again...

God has his plans, and Satan is gnashing his teeth because he knows his days are numbered. Looking at events going on with the WEF and all this other horseshit. Destroying genitals destroying the family destroying the church building AI erasing humans.

Read up and you'll see that Satan's only goal is to get as many people in hell as he can and destroy man the one thing God calls his greatest creation.

We are fervently, trying to destroy something really ugly in Persia right now (for the record there is no Iran and no Iranians. These people are shoving the Persians off their own land. Just like Palestine another place that never existed… Palestine was a Roman word and rather derogatory for the land where the Jews live) just as we fight battles here on earth. God has been clashing with Satan since the falling.

Warren Butterfield's avatar

I like your comment nomad but here's the deal and it's hard for people to embrace this. Sometimes I can't get this through my head.

It's all gonna crash. Nothing in that Bible that's been predicted has ever not followed through. Fortunately, yet, unfortunately for us as odd as that sounds. I don't think man has the capability to change God's mind, especially with the pattern of behavior. The Bible was written for many reasons and one of them is to warn you right now there is only one way out.... I've watched this over the decades as well just when you think the left can't get any crazier they sit around holding each other's beer and the circle jerk rolls on and on and on circling down the drain. You don't have to go with it.

I meant what I said above. I don't like it, but I have to live it and I'm gonna follow what Christ tells me and that is to hold onto him and it doesn't mean there won't be trials and there won't be pain and maybe even death. But I'm not gonna forsake him for the antichrist, for the beast, for Satan for the love of Epstein. It's not gonna happen.

By studying fervently more in my Bible I am prepared for what's coming, whether I like it or not. Are you talking about this stuff with my mother when I was 13. Now I just go back and study deeper for greater understanding just like reading a plumbing manua. I'm also prepared to open my mouth and tell people the good news at the same time I fight it and I continue to vote and do the things that I can.

It's weird when people say you should be blessed to live in these times and in a way we are, but you were designed to be here no matter what you think. There is not a lot of time left.

The Bible tells me not to pick a time and a day and I'm not doing that, but it tells me to keep my eye out for the signs and they are everywhere and this is a snowball rolling down a hill. It might hit a tree and deflect and slow down briefly, but it's gonna pick up speed again. We're gonna see a lot of shit happening fast before we go.

I'm gonna say it again. Find Christ explore what he offers you, make your decision, save your eternity. It's not about this place. I can't stand it here either day by day. It's like carrying an anvil around. When I cope with a savior and I move forward that's real progress not that horseshit coming from the left side of insanity down there in Washington.

It will be interesting to see how the Blue States respond to a SAVE America Law. Will they resist its implementation by still allowing Mail-In ballots, for example? What will the government's response be if they do resist? Could a state's right to seat US House and Senate members be forfeited? What if a Republican-leaning Congressional District within a Blue "resistor" State chooses to follow the tenants of the SAVE America Law? Will their elected House member be eligible to serve?

Only Biblical zealots are talking about ‘end times’. On a more secular note, how about just getting rid of Islamic radicals that are disrupting western countries and the MIddle East?

Ben's avatar

First the crazy shite one and then the sunni ones.

That will require far more than Americans and the Kurds.

A reformation in Islam is required.

It’s impossible to reform the evil out of what is fundamentally evil. “Reform” is the mask they hide behind until they quietly outnumber you. Then it’s you that must “reform”, i.e submit (or die).

Ben's avatar

There are those that do not believe this they of course also believe big government is here to help.

I used to believe in Santa Clause too so there is some bliss in ignorance. After 9/11, when GWB proclaimed their religion was one of peace I decided to read their playbook for myself. It’s anything but.

One need only read the Koran.

It never mentions loving anyone but Allah.

The rest is conquering and war.

There is a book I highly recommend. It is entitled "World Made By Hand" and is about what happened to the United States after some sort of indeterminant war in the Middle East.

The best. I couldn't put it down. I had to keep reading all four books and was sorry that there wasn't a fifth.

Current events seem like we are in the prequel, maybe 10 to 15 years before the series starts.

Mr Kunstler, I have long anticipated receiving your Monday emails. I love your wit, style and find your observations provide a genuine touch stone for me. Quite often, I forward these gems onto friends with similar interests. While I agree with your concerns for getting the SAVE Act passed in the Senate along with righting the wrongs of the corrupt law fare waged against President Trump, I am not optimistic with regard to the Iran situation. What started out as it will probably be over in a few days, then a few weeks, then maybe a few months and now rumblings of boots on the ground, American boots in fact horrifies me. It's like de ja vu all over again!! Our track record stinks since the 40's. Hanging by my thumbs in praying for a miracle.

Thank you for the thoughtful post.

Sorry pal but you’re on the wrong side of history on this one. Your nation has been hijacked by the only terrorist in the middle east, namely Israel. Your President and the batshit crazy mob around him have pulled you into a quagmire unlike any other. He’s already trying to convince you that high oil prices are fine and that is just the beginning. Iran will NOT lose. Good luck.

So you possess neither foresight nor patience. Apparently, you've only briefly studied one side of theirstory. There's nobody named McNamara in this "crazy mob"....... You might want to hold your fetid breath for a little while.

Flaws, warts and all whatever, dollars to donuts there are far better people running this operation right now than you've seen since your days in Carters brand laderhausen. If they succeed, no worries, you'll go right on bitching..... more sullen than ever. There's some progress for ya!

Among others, you bring to mind that what's his name General McGregor, or whatever constantly on TV constantly wringing his hands, clutching his pearls, but never scratching his balls to find out if he can come up with a solution for anything. Naysayers are a dime a fucking dozen. It must hurt to watch a president you don't care for and we don't find perfect who actually has the fucking nards to go put an end to this fucking dribble that has accomplished nothing but spilling blood for years, destroying Persia and the Kurds simultaneously costing the world in lives, blood, and treasure endlessly.

So sit there on your couch, watch your MS never or whatever the hell you watch with all these fucking clowns, shake your Stalinist fist.... (Pro Tip: pull it out of your ass first) they're not quite a 'mob' on your side they're not that sophisticated...

just a "Bakers Doesn't" of assholes spread over a handful of occult riven shows ever earnestly interviewing somebody at just an arm's-length from the prevaricators of the eternal bullshit in the "Middle East" whatever that is..... it's actually the DIDDLE East they can't keep their fucking hands off the Bacha Bazzi boys.... or the seven-year-old girls on their way to Madrassah.

Wrong side of history? Have you been alive the past 50 years?

Inisfad's avatar

I guess you can also add Iran and the Arab countries to your ‘hijacking’ scenario, as they are thanking Israel for its intervention in Iran.

Kunstler says the chaos around the Iran war and American politics is not the end of the story — it is the messy birth of a new order. Much of the outrage, he argues, is driven less by strategy and more by hatred of Trump, even when his actions disrupt both Iran’s power structure and entrenched political rackets at home. Iran’s ruling clerics, in his view, have long fueled regional chaos through proxies and nuclear blackmail, and the confrontation now unfolding is the inevitable result. At the same time, the United States faces its own internal disorder — broken elections, corporate money flooding politics, and institutions losing legitimacy. Kunstler’s message is simple: this moment may look like collapse, but it is really a brutal passage through chaos on the road back to order.

Talk about all the broken institutions in our country, Congress just left on another week of vacation as security lines grind to a halt at airports. The Jacobin leaders on the left, Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, have become insufferable. I can no longer watch TV as Schumer and Jeffries gloat and smile at the chaos and misery they are causing. There must be a special place in hell for these two idiots.

The Iranians who were persecuted by the Mullahs are correct in their statements that Iran has been at war with the West and the US in particular since they took over the whole country 50 years ago or so. It is just that our politicians have been too stupid or too frightened politically to do what was necessary to cut their balls off. What truly emboldened Sadaam (spelling) was how successful Iran had been at blackmailing the West so he wanted in on the action. HIs only screw up was letting it be known he wanted to kill Bush #1 and this got him killed----eventually but.....both Bushs had no guts for really taking on the Iranians because they were frightened of the blowback they would get from the Euros and others who were making tons of money off all of the sanctions and those people did not want to lose their lucrative $billions. Remember the mayor of London who during this time was ( I assume it was true) making $millions off helping the Iraq government evade sanctions so he was against the war.? I am sure it was the same with many of our own gutless politicians and Congress critters .

Yes, I am afraid that Israel has way too much power over our politicians with its well oiled political contribution schemes and blackmailing by Mossad and it is true we are giving Israel way too much taxpayer money when they are rich in their own right but........Iran is telling us to our faces they want to kill us all and at least Israel's ultimate goals do not align 100% with ours it is a damn site closer to what we are wanting that the death of America.

Trump has big balls and is trying to make it safer for America and,..,,.., the world and is willing to take on the real problems rather than sit by and watch us die a slow death of 1000 cuts. And......I applaud him for saying (or yelling) THOSE PEOPLE ARE CRAZY!!!!!! Truer words have never been spoken in a State of the Union message.
