Interesting. I was just walking through Lowe's the other week. Immediately upon entering the store I was confronted with Halloween decorations to one side and Christmas decorations to the other side. Of course, there was no floor room for the practical device I was there to purchase, a gas powered tiller. So many other useful items in what is putatively a home improvement store that can't be displayed because the giant Frosty the Snowman and the 15 foot skeleton are taking up space.
The initial thought that passed my mind was how ludicrous it was to take up valuable real estate displaying what are essentially useless items. Then it struck me, stores stock what they think they can sell. Gas powered tiller to improve the homestead? Nope. Life-sized Yukon Cornelius? You betcha! It says less about Lowe's, who are simply responding to market forces, than it does about the vast legions of shoppers who complain about the cost of healthcare while taking delivery their 15 foot Abominable Snowman.
Years ago, I read a thought piece in the Wall Street Journal. The gist of the article was that you can tell a lot about a society by what it spends its money on. What do all of these over-sized toys say about the American people?
Nothing says “affordability crisis” like over-decorating your house satanically instead of contributing to your kid’s Trump accounts (which my liberal niece won’t get because…Trump!).
We literally rejected a doctor because she was so into Halloween she over decorated her place of business because it is her favorite holiday. The one we chose had a Christian practice, very good experience.
I am disturbed when medical professionals have a lot tattoos. I was at the eye surgeon and one of her techs, a very nice 20 something had sleeve tattoos. I have tattoos but since I was a professional I
got them where they were easy to cover.
I asked about her kids 5 yo and 8 months. I asked out of curiosity how much the tattoos cost and it was over $5000! That’s a car! Or a decent start to college funds for the kids.
I don't understand the stampede of people getting tattoos these days, from teens to grandmas. At the same time, I've met all kinds of very smart people that have gone down the tattoo road.
I dunno. When I was a kid, porches would have one real, hand-carved pumpkin with a candle. We kids would go out on our own til around 10pm, hitting every house to get the biggest possible candy haul. Only toddlers and pre-schoolers were led around by their parents. A different world.
PS - we considered it the height of jolly juvenile delinquency to go around smashing pumpkins the day after Halloween. That was the extent of our antisocial behavior.
naaaah! no thanks. growing up in south Utica, NY. it was the kids in contrived costumes, cobbled together with stuff from around the house, who were the Halloween decorations. the job of the houses was to provide candy to the "trick or treat"-ers. it was that simple. I say this more than I should, but, "I'm almost glad that I won't be around that much longer"! Peace-out!
I have lost any interest in Halloween… the overriding focus on death, evil, the occult, mayhem and fear are disgusting to me.. I like your idea much better.
It is preternatural, the growing publicly displayed affection and homage paid, to the evil one. You see it in the recent Ottumwa, IA, prayer invocation to satan by one member; the clueless sheep in the gallery bow their heads and pray along. You see it in the tats and tongue bolts, ear grommets, nose rings, on face, genitalia, everywhere, on grandmothers grandmothers, young adults, male and female, physicians and nurses. Formerly people who exemplified seriousness and propriety now embrace the drug culture/homicide culture/hard-time prisoner culture. You see a 50-50 mix of dense stupidity and panignorance of anything that learned people used to value. In this environment, the real victims, children, are raised to be ambivalent to good or evil. Totally ignorant of American history and our characteristic Christian and Judaical virtues ensconced in the Bible, they enter adulthood entirely devoid of any moral education. Cannibals in Africa wearing penis gourds and Ubange lip-plates have a firmer grasp of good and evil. It is to weep.
The “dissolution of the boundary between” childhood and adulthood is even more frightening. It seems to have been a trend over the past several decades, currently visible in many areas of life. And extending even to the dissolution of the fundamental difference between male and female. A culture that has lost its way, and still looking for a bottom. Plastic junk is now everywhere. I can hardly wait for the Christmas displays.
The cheap plastic home items I have from the 1960s are very high quality, and it was the cheap stuff back then. Something as simple as a plastic handled kitchen strainer.
I was taken aback by all the hideous creatures at the grocery store today. It ain’t pretty, the physical and no doubt mental state of humanity. Good God, most don’t look human!
oh the tattoos and also the hair extensions all made in china.
Why do people get those stupid hair extensions: men and women. It is just like the piercings and tattoos and blue hair and now the huge wooly or sticky outie hair extensions that make them look like voodoo dolls and that stuff is not cheap.
Considering the number of mug shots for the “stoopit” (love that word!) that have neck tattoos, I think everyone with a tattoo from the neck up should have to register with their local police.
I mean, even the guy doing the tattoo knows that his client has or will commit a crime.
Around here we have been taken over with 12 ft. tall skeletons in the now endless pissing contests for All Hallows Eve displays. Suffering from a fairly sane desire to be practical I must ask, where the heck do they store these things? Some displays began appearing around Labor Day. I don't get it.
We knew several families that RENTED STORAGE year round for this twisted display. I think James is right and these displays are mirrors of the cultural psyche.
Don't understand how a night for kids morphed into a holiday for adults.
Kinda like most toys are purchased by adults now?
And you’ll see more adults with cartooned themed clothing than 5 year olds.
Those adults failed to grow up.
Same way we got Disney Adults.
Marketing. To adults who never actually grow up.
Retardation by design, morons are easier to control.
How, why, — ?
Like the answer isn’t as plain as the hair on your heads?
Look up a description of the hideous hamas behavior on Oct 7 2023. Then maybe you’ll understand a micron’s worth of the question.
They're not adults.

All the cheap Chinese Halloween stuff has a bigger profit margin than all the other cheap Chinese home improvement stuff they sell.

hahaha thanks for the warning.
I need to zip over there for some exterior door knobs.
really, thanks for the heads up!
no kidding.. I hate Halloween and I don't find the grotesque displays the least bit funny or entertaining. at all.
I agree! There’s no shortage of horrors and ugliness in the world, why not contribute something heartwarming and beautiful?
I especially hate Halloween colors, decorations, candy begging, and well, all of it.
We literally rejected a doctor because she was so into Halloween she over decorated her place of business because it is her favorite holiday. The one we chose had a Christian practice, very good experience.
Anyone that has the time and money to set up a vast holiday display on their lawn isn't suffering an "Affordability Crisis!".

A receptionist who checked me in recently had a septum nose ring.
NOT the thing I want to be greeted with at a medical office (or anywhere).
Only two types of creatures have these, and the farm animals don’t have a choice.

I'm originally from Rome, NY, and guessing we are of similar age. I know exactly what you mean.
:)

It was a big deal for most kids growing up in the 60’s. It was all about the candy.

You set me to thinking about the 6 year-old that just shot his teacher. I wonder how his home life is?

I imagine most of these changes seeped out of Californication and big rotten apple.

Tattoos have gotten so bad lately I’m forced to look away when I’m in public.
We can barely afford food and fuel but we can buy all this stuff ...
And tattoos. Funny how all the druggie bums wandering in the streets, the so-called homeless, have them.
oh the tattoos and also the hair extensions all made in china.

A huge bill board sign that says "I am stoopit"

This will save law enforcement one big step.

Even worse, that obscene amount of cash goes straight to China.
