For those of us following decline for a couple of decades now, a steep step downward does appear imminent. Historically, collapse of civilizations is thought of as a centuries long process - hence the "Long" of the Long Emergency. 20 years ago many thought they'd never see what's already arrived in their lifetimes. OTOH, I've thought the collapse of Western standards of living, particularly in the U.S., could mirror the rise of standard of living from the last century (thank you cheap oil!).
This process would provide an accelerated collapse, at least economically in the U.S. and Europe and Japan (as somebody famous once said, the first country to choose to go medieval). In other words, lifestyles of the 1920s could be coming back soon - easily by the end of the century if not sometime next year. Less and more expensive and less reliable energy, fewer cars and trucks, a breakdown of phone and Internet service - even indoor plumbing are all huge advances that may disappear in the next century. Cities are not any better off than rural areas as the inability to maintain infrastructure will be the dominant theme in Downtown USA.
Since we live in an age where as a species we don't agree on much, can't address real problems like Potemkin economics and resource depletion, things are looking grim. Nobody knows exactly how the decline plays out, but chances are IMHO you're right about less (or more expensive) oil going in step with a drop in the standard of living and population. We have so many complex systems with little resilience that came about courtesy of abundant and cheap oil, that it's almost a certainty that many will perish as fresh potable water becomes more scarce, effective sewer systems fail, and decline in crop yields occur as fertilizer and energy intensive farming goes by the wayside.
AI and crypto are gimmicks meant to prop up stock prices, and neither technology provides any hint of a significant leap over present systems.
History shows that a collapse of a civilization will result in most tech and advanced knowledge being lost. This is a pretty complex and far-reaching post. I can't really say whether I agree or disagree with much of the prognostications and predictions. I tend to just listen to my gut these days (that started the first time I read a sign telling me I had to put a rag on my face to enter a store), and it tells me that we are going to see the "system" (banks, large corps across industries, entertainment, etc.) move into the new order that Davos and the BIS crowd are moving toward.
I see a separation of those who will not take part and those who will go along with it. I think major signs of this new world taking shape will be visible in 5-10 years, starting with digital IDs and digital currency, and the start of true geofencing. Once both of those things are accepted and used by large numbers of the population, then the new world will have its foundation.
Over time, the conveniences of the new world will draw in any fence-sitters, and only the hardcore will continue to resist, out in the enclaves of bumfuck wherever.
Boomers, Gen X (me), and perhaps the early Gen Yers won't really have to deal with the evils of this new system, won't have to make the choice to try and live as free as possible or join the digital plantation, but Gen Z will, and depending on what they accept, the course will be set.

So, imagine that we start with an ignorant, brainwashed and apathetic body of citizens (that shouldn't be difficult) and the ruling machine sees an easy opportunity to cheat in elections. The installed government doesn't approximate what the citizens want or support, so the public either takes back the reigns somehow, or lazily gives in to the new tyranny. At this juncture we find out if the people will act or not. Either way they end up with the government they deserve. If you start with a vigilant and dogged, freedom loving public on the other hand, and they demand good governance and quickly replace corrupt, demagogues you also have a people who get the government they deserve.

Even Trump, despite his feisty temperament, probably understands that to openly ignore federal judiciary rulings is to cross the Rubicon. The Constitution may be derided by people of various, and opposing, persuasions but still has a hold on American minds. Many believe, erroneously, that judicial review is tucked away somewhere in it or has prevailed for so long it might as well be.
But if radical defiance of the deep state is in the cards, there may not be a better opportunity and we can assume Trump knows it. Aside from his love affair with Israel he is good at taking the public's pulse. The latest incarnation of “artificial intelligence” is so called generative. It largely remaps chunks of existing text around similar patterns. I think it has enough training data to approximate “connotations” around words. At the end of the day, though, it’s a glorified auto-plagiarize feature. It doesn’t really invent anything. Given how the training data was lifted from the internet, it has a lot of noise in it, and financially ruining anyone who would put up new content in the hopes of generating ad revenue or business leads means AI probably won’t be getting near as much new training data in the years ahead.
The previous AI generation about 5 years ago was geared towards pattern recognition only, rather than generation. That actually looked promising, particularly for industrial automation, given a good set of training samples of thing like “good part”, “bad part” (call for repair). And it used MUCH less electricity.
Disclosure: I work as a programmer, albeit in mundane record keeping type work. I studied AI some (Lisp, neural networks) in college back in the 80s during my CS degree. But I preferred to live in rural (inland) California, rather than enduring the SF Bay Area, so I never went the uber high tech route.

Clinical, cold, lots of right angles, and more anthracite-on-white facades than you can shake a stick at. Concrete boxes joined together, capped with the dreaded flat roof. Most of the buildings from the 60s and 70s have never been renovated, and no one really wants to renovate anything anyways because "Das kostet Geld!" That's modern Germany. The souls have been sucked out of people here.
Two years ago I spent 5 days in Colmar, France doing bicycle loops into the mountains and wine regions. The human scale is exhilarating. But I have also done the Rothenburg-Regensburg Altmuhl Valley bike paths and Southern Bavaria through the lakes which are also quite agricultural and beautiful against the mountains. Germany has many small town hidden treasures I admire. The US has very few "villages".

For those of us following decline for a couple of decades now, a steep step downward does appear imminent. Cities are not any better off than rural areas as the inability to maintain infrastructure will be the dominant theme in Downtown USA.

There will be a rebuilding - but it's relative to what's possible after, as John Michael Greer would say, the rubble stops bouncing. In other words, things will improve from the worst of times, but we're not going to see the higher standard of living for billions of people - ever again.
In other words, a sustainable way of living with much less tech and energy, something along the lings of 1850 or so, but with something like 650 A.D. along the way.
And with far fewer people. A global population of less than a billion seems likely.

Nobody knows exactly how the decline plays out, but chances are IMHO you're right about less (or more expensive) oil going in step with a drop in the standard of living and population. We have so many complex systems with little resilience that came about courtesy of abundant and cheap oil, that it's almost a certainty that many will perish as fresh potable water becomes more scarce, effective sewer systems fail, and decline in crop yields occur as fertilizer and energy intensive farming goes by the wayside.

History shows that a collapse of a civilization will result in most tech and advanced knowledge being lost. This is a pretty complex and far-reaching post. I can't really say whether I agree or disagree with much of the prognostications and predictions. I tend to just listen to my gut these days (that started the first time I read a sign telling me I had to put a rag on my face to enter a store), and it tells me that we are going to see the "system" (banks, large corps across industries, entertainment, etc.) move into the new order that Davos and the BIS crowd are moving toward.
I see a separation of those who will not take part and those who will go along with it. I think major signs of this new world taking shape will be visible in 5-10 years, starting with digital IDs and digital currency, and the start of true geofencing. Once both of those things are accepted and used by large numbers of the population, then the new world will have its foundation.
Over time, the conveniences of the new world will draw in any fence-sitters, and only the hardcore will continue to resist, out in the enclaves of bumfuck wherever.
Boomers, Gen X (me), and perhaps the early Gen Yers won't really have to deal with the evils of this new system, won't have to make the choice to try and live as free as possible or join the digital plantation, but Gen Z will, and depending on what they accept, the course will be set.

So, imagine that we start with an ignorant, brainwashed and apathetic body of citizens (that shouldn't be difficult) and the ruling machine sees an easy opportunity to cheat in elections. The installed government doesn't approximate what the citizens want or support, so the public either takes back the reigns somehow, or lazily gives in to the new tyranny. At this juncture we find out if the people will act or not. Either way they end up with the government they deserve. If you start with a vigilant and dogged, freedom loving public on the other hand, and they demand good governance and quickly replace corrupt, demagogues you also have a people who get the government they deserve.

Even Trump, despite his feisty temperament, probably understands that to openly ignore federal judiciary rulings is to cross the Rubicon. The Constitution may be derided by people of various, and opposing, persuasions but still has a hold on American minds. Many believe, erroneously, that judicial review is tucked away somewhere in it or has prevailed for so long it might as well be.
But if radical defiance of the deep state is in the cards, there may not be a better opportunity and we can assume Trump knows it. Aside from his love affair with Israel he is good at taking the public's pulse. TDS is there, but also a new commitment among a significant number to drain the swamp despite, or because of, Trump's inability (or unwillingness) to carry out his proclamation.

In the world that is coming, partially run with AI, what does the spectrum of jobs look like? Are we training folks for the future? Just how many folks are capable of being trained to be coders or AI systems folks? Add on the possibility that SkyNet is a possibility as the increasing dependence on AI will decrease other Job types.
That is such a great question. I get most of my news now from youtube and the gaming streamers (although I've never played a game since Pac-man and Gallactica on an Atari), and this whole "internet/social media" economy is huge, and incomprehensible.
Automation we had time to adjust to, badly, but AI is a complete surprise, one of those innovations that will shatter all the rules.
I don’t know the answer to that. The Management can remain irrational longer than most employees can remain solvent, unfortunately. Especially with fiat currency at their disposal.
The latest incarnation of “artificial intelligence” is so called generative. It largely remaps chunks of existing text around similar patterns. I think it has enough training data to approximate “connotations” around words. At the end of the day, though, it’s a glorified auto-plagiarize feature. It doesn’t really invent anything. Given how the training data was lifted from the internet, it has a lot of noise in it, and financially ruining anyone who would put up new content in the hopes of generating ad revenue or business leads means AI probably won’t be getting near as much new training data in the years ahead.

The previous AI generation about 5 years ago was geared towards pattern recognition only, rather than generation. That actually looked promising, particularly for industrial automation, given a good set of training samples of thing like “good part”, “bad part” (call for repair). And it used MUCH less electricity.
Disclosure: I work as a programmer, albeit in mundane record keeping type work. I studied AI some (Lisp, neural networks) in college back in the 80s during my CS degree. But I preferred to live in rural (inland) California, rather than enduring the SF Bay Area, so I never went the uber high tech route.
Paralegals are a good example. They were invented to do legal research for lawyers. Used to be that meant cracking the books. Then the computerized search engines took most of the crunch work out. Today, AI has the potential to eliminate the job description as millions of references can be looked at in seconds.
Another obvious one is HR. Resumes can be scanned for relevancy in seconds, payroll is automatic, and employees records are a snap.
You've got mortgage AI completing tens of thousands of applications in minutes, what would be months for an entire industry chain to get from 'first cold call' to 'in the pipeline.'

Many people don't realize how important this is. I've been in NW Germany long enough now that I have grown to hate most urban environments here. The country was clearly rebuilt with the intention of keeping the people psychologically down.
I don't buy the bullshit about it having to be rebuilt so quickly that this was the best they could do. The worst damage came in the 60s and 70s, and now all of those hideous structures also happen to be dilapidated, which makes most towns here even more depressing.
Spent a week in Alsace, France, recently and it was like stepping into the Shire. Most of the residents of the villages in the area are far from wealthy, but the place is a slice of heaven in many respects. As soon as we crossed back over the border 7 days later it was like entering the outer ring of Mordor.
The Zionists wanted to genocide the Germans entirely a la the Morgenthau and Kaufman plans, and of course the mass killing of German POW's by Eisenhower and other European nations. A German American congressman went after them on the floor of the House, accusing them of attempting genocide. And Truman decided in their favor, telling Morgenthau, "Henry, we have to give them something.". Morgenthau was very bitter, feeling that he had been used to float the idea out and then had the balloon popped in his face, revealing him as the ghoul that he in fact was. But by no means the only one!
What kills me is finding out just how much astonishingly high science of truly ancient vintage was passed down in that stonework. We're talking the sciences of sound, light, and mineral qualities - cymatics in the windows, the spires as energy collectors, the sound qualities of the cathedrals transmuting vocal harmonies lifted in unison, the amazing array of stonecutting machinery - and most grievous, the bells.
The centuries of knowledge lost in the casting of brass bells, whose resonant vibratory frequencies harmonized the literal bodies of everyone within hearing range - these across Europe were harvested by the warmongers, deliberately taken down en masse and melted into ammunition for death and destruction.
I am not even talking about that stuff, though. What I enjoy just as much are the old villages, with half-timbered houses. They aren't usually that fancy, but due to the scale of the villages, the way the houses sit, the materials used, the connection with the local environment, etc., my sense of well-being is very high in these places.
The Alsace is a Shire come to life. Rolling hills with pastures and fields; old-growth forests bordering the pasture land; vineyards aplenty; impeccably maintained medieval villages; gardens aplenty (for utilitarian purposes and enjoyment); and what appears to be a real love of beauty, right down to the smallest detail.
Many parts of Germany on the other hand still don't get it. They were beaten down after the war in every sense possible. All modern architecture is blocky Bauhaus-meets-cellblock style stuff. Clinical, cold, lots of right angles, and more anthracite-on-white facades than you can shake a stick at. Concrete boxes joined together, capped with the dreaded flat roof. Most of the buildings from the 60s and 70s have never been renovated, and no one really wants to renovate anything anyways because "Das kostet Geld!" That's modern Germany. The souls have been sucked out of people here.
Two years ago I spent 5 days in Colmar, France doing bicycle loops into the mountains and wine regions. The human scale is exhilarating. But I have also done the Rothenburg-Regensburg Altmuhl Valley bike paths and Southern Bavaria through the lakes which are also quite agricultural and beautiful against the mountains. Germany has many small town hidden treasures I admire. The US has very few "villages".
Most of the larger built-up areas are exactly as I described, full of either run-down 60s and 70s architectural abortions hatefully clad with nasty salmon-colored paint or glazed brick, or they are full of "Neubausiedlungen" where everything is a soulless, clinical Bauhaus-like box with anthracite windows.
The bells, the bells! And the fine ladies with the expanded skirts - the belles - shaped like bells with voices not as fine (in general).

But Fox gives a more balanced report than any of the MSM sources. Instead of listening to “I hate Trump”, over and over, we hear actual news, and actually some liberal side folks presenting their opinions. Although I went a bit overboard in a previous quip, you are quite right as to the immediate effects - all of the white collar classes, including and especially government workers (!) are faced with being replaced by a kiosk or an app.
Basically the white collar jobs that were paper work jobs, the CYA, record keeping, history searching, data storing, data reducing, HR type jobs are going to disappear. This is an effect of capitalism, to wring out cost from the means of production. I believe in capitalism, unbridled competitive capitalism where government stays out of the way and competition alone runs the marketplace. Today, though, AI threatens that competition in the jobs marketplace and has the potential to ruin the world’s economy.
Hence UBI, an idea of Silicon Valley to “fix” the labor reduction problem that AI presents. The number one problem, the funding of UBI, could be resolved by taxing the machines output. Tax the machines! However, why should the PTB drive AI and especially robotics if they are taxed to the point that there is no advantage to them. Aha, is that a solution here, should we punish the advance of high tech, for once.
I see the biggest problem though to UBI and high tech is the loss of self-respect and pride we will have if the world turns into a welfare state, which is what UBI is. To Joe Average, what is the point of life if you do not earn your own way? UBI with AI will be a disaster for the entire world, not just the USA.

Mr. Kunstler's views largely match my own. If any of this comes to pass even close to his predictions, the US will not be immune. The left's constant promotion of every deviance, every crackpot socialist idea, every diminution of liberty, will push the secession movement closer to reality. There are small-scale movements now, most notably the Greater Idaho movement. Watch for these movements to grow.
The secession movement gives me some hope. I think that is exactly the sort of thing that will be needed to prevent the global digital plantation. It could really work.
Barring something of that nature, I don't see how humanity avoids a few hundered years of enslavement.
I would liken the possible scenarios to the Savage Reservation of 'Brave New World" vs the unchecked authoritarian power in '1984'.
That's more or less the exact forecast from one of the WEF's tabletop excercises. The "Cry-Freedom Ghettos," I believe they were called. There was even a video I posted here long ago that showed more or less what was planned. Done in a cartoon style, it showed a day in the life of a normie in the New Normal.

1984 seemed to have no way out. Terrifying. At least to a person who values freedom and abhors the 24/7 control in an upside-down world.
Brave New World had a way out proffered if one would take the chance (opportunity ?) and risk all on the chance to make it to/in the Reservation. A place of allusion, opposed to illusion.
However, either upward mobility or birth into privilege are needed.
Soma use is a different upside-down world, and maintaining the Savage Reservation as an apparent museum piece is also terrifying. However, it is maintained for visits by high level occupiers of the brave new world.
Visiting required permission, a terrifying requirement. What if one chose to remain in the reservation, opposed to being left behind on a visit?
It opens avenues of hope for a freer life.
Although this theoretically exists in '1984' (the Proles), city-dwellers lack the skills to live there.
Lack of skills to exist relying on self is, imo, more terrifying than being left behind on a visit to a controlled yet freer 'museum place'. The history (always important) is an individual has more survival potential in the 'museum place' of the Reservation than living among Proles.

I think you may be right. I look for one of two possibilities in North America, unification as a defense against BRICS+ of a re-alignment of Blue and Red, ie: Gimmes and independents. City states may become important as they are collection points for Blues and their dependence.
Won't work both Mexico and Canada are all onboard with the Socialist beast system and both hate America but like to suck off wealth like leeches.
Mexico uses America as a pressure relief valve to cool off their pissed off people who have no jobs and no way to earn a real living without coming into America illegally for a decade or two to work or sponge of our system.
Canada charges tariffs and sponges off American military might to offset the fact they barely have one and uses those proceeds for their nitwit healthcare system which later on turns euthanasia for all.

IMO the idea needs to expand in popularity and comprehension.
Most dissident commentary (of which this blog is an excellent example) is focused on analysis of what went wrong and then salted with a few prognostications for seasoning. But what does that accomplish? Said another way, endless diagnosis cures nothing. At some point, we must redirect our cognitive powers toward remedy and that time may soon be upon us. Pshaw you say, such discourse is not permitted within the Overton Window. There lies great danger. Nonsense. Would there have been an American Revolution if such constraints bound men of honor to cower and mewl? No I say, the time is now and we shall stand tall and pick up the sword and mace.
Not sure that Mankind is capable of being other than stupid and crazy. There are occasional bright spots but on the whole the evidence points otherwise.
