Dreams Die Hard

In The Long Emergency (2005, Atlantic Monthly Press), I said that we ought to expect the federal government to become increasingly impotent and ineffectual - that this would be a hallmark of the times.  In fact, I said that any enterprise organized at the colossal scale would function poorly in years ahead, whether it was a government, a state university, a national chain retail company, or a giant midwestern farm.  It is characteristic of the compressive contraction our society faces that giant hypercomplex systems will wobble and fail. We should expect this.
It's tragic that the avatar of hopefulness himself, Barack Obama, stepped into his role at exactly the moment when this set of conditions was getting traction. It is sure to get worse, and there are going to be a lot of disappointed people out there who will be suffering terrible losses and real pain in daily life. Societies don't do well when the public falls into the broad despair that is the opposite of hope. That's when the long knives and the tribal animosities come out and things get smashed.
Within the context of conventional party politics - the kind that has been baseline "normal" in the USA for a long time - we see this playing out in two factions that are increasingly out-of-touch with reality.  The Obama government has made itself hostage to a toxic form of pretense and lying. In order to sustain the wish for "hope" - if not hope itself - the President and his White House advisors along with his cabinet appointments, are pretending that the historical forces of compressive contraction are not underway.  They're flat-out lying about the employment figures issued in the government's name.  They're willfully ignoring the comprehensive bankruptcy gripping government at all levels. They refuse to bring the law to bear against "the malefactors of great wealth." They appear to not understand the epochal energy scarcity problem the whole world faces, or its implications for industrial economies. Most of all, they persist in promoting the lie that this economy can return to the prior state of reckless debt accumulation (a.k.a "consumerism") that has made us so ridiculous and unhealthy.
The trouble with self-delusion, either in a person or a society, is that reality doesn't care what anybody believes, or what story they put out.  Reality doesn't "spin." Reality does not have a self-image problem.  Reality does not yield its workings to self-esteem management. These days, Americans don't like reality very much because it won't let them push it around. Reality is an implacable force and the only question for human beings in the face of it is: what will you do?  In other words, it's not really possible to manage reality, but you can certainly choose to manage your affairs within reality.  We won't do that because it's too difficult. This harsh situation leaves the public increasingly with little more than bad feelings of discouragement and persecution. It's astonishing that all the smart people around the president don't get this.
Reality unfolds emergently, and this ought to interest us.  For instance, I have maintained for many years that we are approaching the twilight of the automobile age - and the implications of this for daily life in the USA are pretty large. For a long time, I had assumed that this change of circumstances would proceed from our problems with the oil supply.  But reality is sly.  It has thrown two new plot twists into the story lately. America's romance with cars may not founder just on the fuel supply question.  It now appears that our problems with capital are so severe that far fewer people will be able to borrow money from banks to buy cars at the rate, and in the way, that the system has been organized to depend on.  Our problems with capital are also depriving us of the ability to pay to fix the hypercomplex system of county roads, interstate highways, and even city streets that make motoring possible. What will we do?
For now, a cashless government gives out cash-for-clunkers, which is basically a self-esteem building program designed to make the government feel better about itself because it is ostensibly taking 11-miles-per-gallon cars off the road and replacing them with 27-miles-per-gallon cars, thus forestalling scary problems with climate change. It's dumb of course, but the failure of leadership is comprehensive. Even the elite environmentalists at the Aspen Institute are preoccupied with finding new "green" ways to keep all the cars running.  They put zero effort into the idea of walkable communities, or restoring the railroad system, which will be the reality-based remedies for the car-dependency problem.
The Republican right wing is, if anything, even more childishly delusional. For Glen Beck and Sarah Palin it comes down to "drill, baby, drill."  They know nothing about the geology of oil - they don't even believe that the earth is more than six-thousand years old, meaning they don't believe in geology, period - but they are inflamed with the faith of eight-year-old children that we must have a lot more oil in the ground because this is America and God loves us more than people in other parts of the planet so it must be there. As their disappointment mounts, their childish ideas will turn cruel and sadistic. They'll seek to punish anybody who believes that the earth is more than six thousand years old. The catch is, If they get into power in the election cycles ahead, they'll be impotent and ineffectual even at persecuting their enemies.
In the meantime, American life will just wind down, no matter what we believe.  It won't wind down to a complete stop.  Its near-term destination is to lower levels of complexity and scale than what we've been used to for a long time.  People will be able to drive fewer cars fewer miles.  The roads will get worse.  They'll be worse in some places than others. There will be fewer jobs to go to and fewer things sold. People who live in communities scaled to the energy and capital realities of the years ahead are liable to be more comfortable. We're surely going to have trouble with money. Households will drown in debt and lose all their savings.  Money could be scarce or worthless. Credit will be scarcer.
Both factions of American political life indulge in the fiction of control. History is reality's big brother.  It is taking us someplace that we don't want to go, so it will probably have to drag us there kicking and screaming. For starters, both reality and history will probably take us out to some woodshed of the national soul and beat the crap out of us.  That could be a salutary thing, since the crap consists of all the lies we tell ourselves. Once we're rid of all that, we may rediscover a few things left inside our collective identity that are worth regarding with real self-respect.

Hard to argue with this,

I've often said that the USA and / or its people will start to act like a wounded animal as the realization grows that things are never going to be the dame as they have been.

What does it say about the country when people use their primary tool, money, every day of their lives yet do not understand it at all?

Good... we need to get our ass kicked

"they are inflamed with the faith of eight-year-old children that we must have a lot more oil in the ground because this is America and God loves us more than people in other parts of the planet so it must be there."

Those eight year olds are armed, mentally immature and downright ignorant, a very frightening combination.

I get the feeling that most people are stunned -- sitting around with one thumb in their mouth and the other thumb up their butt.

Soon we'll see that the few that have been practicing Voluntary Simplicity will have a useful headstart on the coming tsumani of Involuntary Simplicity.

I had to drive to Latham from Saratoga Springs for work recently. I was amazed at how many cars had only one person in them. In the five days that I drove on the Northway, I saw only one car with two people or more in it on the way to work. Doesn't anybody carpool? There were so many cars that the Northway actually came to a complete halt. I had plenty of time to look around while I was sitting in my car going nowhere.

With the price of gasoline so high and the Great Recession gripping the country for the past year, I didn't expect to find traffic as usual on the Northway.

I have always thought that there should be a monorail like they have at Disney World running down the middle of I-87 (the Northway) at least from Albany to Glens Falls.

"The catch is, If they get into power in the election cycles ahead, they'll be impotent and ineffectual even at persecuting their enemies."

Mmm ... not really. Think about all the tin-horn dictators in starving nations who have, down through history, been able to find the wherewithal to torture, imprison, and subjugate. That's usually the last thing to go, not the first.

This morning, elite opinion (Paul Krugman, NYT) has officially joined Kunstler and other pessimists/doomers. We are fast careening down a steep slope and there are apparently no brakes on this vehicle of state.

There is still room to "hope" that Obama succeeds because only a functional state can possibly alter the outcome for the better. The Beck/Palin nihilists want civil war for its own sake.

If it's too late to do anything reasonable, then it is time to buy gold, grow your own food, and stock up on ammo. This is a Hobbsian nightmare that seems to be enveloping all of us. Once it sets, we're done.

to see the near-term future -- until the big box stores don't have enough to put on the shelves. Then these people may be in the streets looking for someone to punish for destroying their favorite hangout. Or perhaps they'll just move in to Walmart and wait for the goods to return -- like the cargo cults in the Pacific.

People are scared out there, that is why drug use is skyrocketing. Soon you will start to see killngs over the most inane things like traffic accidents. I tell people all the time ever been around right after a hurricane and see grown men fight over gasoline. That is our future. Soon we will have armed gaurds around refineries and cops or security gaurds at every gas station.

To digress momentarily from the central thesis of the essay: Ann Coulter offered the comment, "...what is the threat posed by the religious right, precisely? Is the nation in danger of having its coarseness removed? When anal sex, oral sex and premarital sex are all gleefully laughed about on prime-time TV, the perill of religious values infecting the culture would seem to be somewhat overrated."

IOW I'm dubious that Palin and Beck believe in the 6,000-years-old idea.

Back to the essay: Yeah, many people hate reality. It's the opposite of a lifetime's experience and "what everybody knows". However, since WW II cheap energy has eanbled us create the greatest accumulation of wealth and luxury in history. We've spoiled ourselves. And the majority of people don't realize that we've mined the cheap energy sources. Used them up.

When certain patterns of behavior provide gratification, I've noticed that most people fight like fish on a hook to avoid reality. Wishful thinking. Okay, wish in one hand, poop in the other and see which fills up first.

The main reason I favor "Drill, baby, drill" is that rational government leadership could (maybe) have the oncoming future reality be a more orderly and smoother transition into a world made by hand. Use the bully pulpit to get a factual message out to the masses, with our marginal oil production helping to control costs.

Since I doubt that rationality is a high-odds thing, I figure that "Drill, baby, drill" holds down the cost of my vehicular wanderings in this twilight of my life. Pardon the cynicism, but there's no profit in it for me to rearrange the deck chairs on this modern Titanic.

This is just another reason why we need to rebuild our rail infrastructure in North America. Not only can this drastically reduce energy use and carbon emissions, it can create a lot of jobs.

Caustic commentary..... from Vermont

I was taken by this moment in the larger Zeitgeist, from the Sunday NY Times. I an interview with the director of the end-of-days epic 2012, the director was quoted:

He has also adjusted to an audience that has become more cynical, Mr. Emmerich said. “I think we have become more and more pessimistic about the future,” he said. “I see it in myself. In ‘Independence Day’ the world was something worth defending. In ‘Day After Tomorrow,’ the message was, ‘We’ll go down if we don’t stop what we’re doing,’ and in ‘2012,’ ‘We’re going down no matter what.’ ”

Jim, are you getting some payola from Hollwood, while it's still in business?

I think the worst thing this country could face in the foreseeable future would be a swing to the radical right, such as what is going on in the Republican Party right now. In the event that JHK is accurate regarding what we have in store for our future, the potential for people to grasp at simplistic solutions without factual support cannot be underestimated.

Once in power, the co-oping of the radical rights use of the military to fight real and imagined enemies worldwide, to secure the empire and temporarily increase energy supplies, could have disastrous consequences for the people of the United States.

This is the real threat we face from Obama's economic and political shilly-shallying, an abandonment of realistic solutions in favor of an all out march into fantasy land. THAT is a real threat, and if you don't believe it just listen to a little of the commentary on RW radio right now, and things haven't even gotten serious yet.

The grand experiment called "Industrial Civilization" - the mother of all bubbles - has hit thermodynamic limits and is in the process of deflating: Faster in some areas, slower in others. Along with its sidekick, Globalization, it is showing its weaknesses and its many unintended side effects and they are vast and unsettling to say the least.

The idea that all 6,737,804,621 human beings - or even a substantial fraction of them - can enjoy all the trappings of "modern industrial society" including personal autos, vacations to distant lands, plasma TV's, large houses, scads of electronic gadgets and all the electricity and fuel to power them all - all on a planet of finite size and resources - is just beyond reason.

Yet, this is the very illusion that Industrial Civilization bombards us with through the relentless commercials, billboards, branding, junk mail, icons, and "signs, signs everywhere there's signs" - driving the wedge of hyper consumerism into the minds of every person the planet, 24/7. Today's mantra is "buy baby buy". Buy and consume like no tomorrow (assuming there is a tomorrow!).

As the participants of industrial civilization have been increasingly sleepwalking in the comfortable illusion of consumer society, the moorings have been breaking loose and the infrastructure has been creaking and cracking all around us. It is quite obvious to those of us who bother to look and listen "outside the box". Or should I say "outside the Big Box".

It goes without saying that as the world population continues to increase and more and more of the world jumps on the bandwagon of globalization and consumer society and the demands from our finite planet increase year over year that we are headed for a cliff. We surely appear to be headed for a train wreck of huge proportions. Just as the oil peaks, the climate changes, water shortages become more severe and many of the minerals and ores required to manufacture all the goods become terribly scarce, that is when the moorings will snap and everything will come undone.

We had a choice of either a "severe but tenable correction" or a "hard crash". The Powers-That-Be appears to be priming the world for the "hard crash" scenario. Both the previous and the current administration in the USA appear to be set on sustaining the unsustainable - by reactively "running around and putting out fires" and "plugging leaks" as they occur, not realizing (or caring) that the pot the whole world is in is only getting hotter. The economic recovery they are touting is all about getting the "Global Economy back on its feet" and getting "consumers" back into the stores buying the cars, TV's, homes and other trappings that make this huge, unsustainable monster work. They may even succeed - or appear to succeed - for a while. Incidentally, electric passenger rail, localized farming and walkable communities are not even on the radar. Again, that’s the matter of priorities.

That day will come when we have to ratchet our lifestyles way, way down to "match" the thermodynamic equilibrium of the little planet we are on. If we do this before too many extinctions and the entire plankton die off we may even have a shot at a future!

"In other words, it's not really possible to manage reality, but you can certainly choose to manage your affairs within reality." Oh, but even people you expect will get it are managing their reality nicely. A bright person interested in food security issues, when pressed into talking about peak oil and massive economic contraction, said to me that 1. OPEC makes oil prices elastic arbitrarily and in their own interest (that took care of peak oil) and 2. 'they' (government) won't 'let' things get too bad because otherwise people will revolt. Sigh. So, I keep on trucking, trying to help people scale back their consumption while they can choose, before they have to.

Test of faith! ARM resets third quarter 2010. Lash Santa Clause to the oars and whip his lazy back.

In rough times, people tend to turn to ancient irrational belief systems for guidance, especially in the absence of a coherent, rational philosophy.

The swing to the hard right we are seeing augers ill for rational thought, and the worst aspect of the ascendancy of the religious right is its opposition to contraception and abortion.

We WILL depopulate one way or the other. Would it be that childbearing could be made very unfashionable and unpopular, to the point where only half the population breeds and then only one child per couple. That way, the population could shrink, by sheer natural attrition, to manageable levels within 70 years, and could be much smaller within a generation.

But we won't do that. Fear begets superstition and fear of angering the great Gods who rule it all. Never do traditional fear-based religions have such purchase as when a society is collapsing. So we can only hope that environmental stresses reduce fertility steeply among youthful population and that young people are just plain scared into forgoing children.

http://sbillinghurst.wordpress.com

What can I do to post a coherent message? I do not do themes. They don't have names. I have a collection of new "scraps of bratwurst" with the unifying characteristic of all needing to be codified and all timely. That is what I think writing is for, actually. I'm with Rick Nelson: "You can't please everyone, so you, got to please yourself." Not Kunstler.

I'm sorry. Now I've used language to spread hate. That's probably my theme. Here, I'll tie it up in a bow:

Kunstler writes that his family was not religious, but, in speaking with the locals and hearing David Cross, I have come to find that Jews feel they are an ethnic group. In any case, they are not allowed to quit it. Part of their religion is their existence. They are, so they kvetch (where'd I get that word from? Am I sure it's not 'kibbitz'?).

No, I'm not 'Internet-savvy'. I don't need to be. We (chemists) created the atom bomb in the abstract. The Internet is ruining literacy. JHK's been on it too much. Look at this English:

quote

They appear to not understand the epochal energy scarcity problem

unquote

He's one of the scribes, as Damon Runyon would call them. I'd write taking note of the transitive verb to appear. That's the God you're serving.

In this way note the difference:

They appear to not understand.
They appear to understand.

No difference (Can't see through their head. Maybe he didn't mention reality this week.)

They appear not to understand is correct/incorrect, but that's not the point. I'm an antihero, that's American; that's the point. "Appear not" takes the write off the hook for what may appear to anybody with half a brain.

I do not want my son to grow up like Jim Kunstler, an only child with divorced parents. This has made Jim accept my abuse. It is in his nature. I have a brother and he is a writer, name's Kevin Billinghurst of Sweden. I want my brother, not Kunstler, but we stayed in California and are now old. It's all for naught. I stayed here, but my bullying kind stayed around when the going got tough. I'm going to die because I hate, and one thing I am particularly adamant about is not selling myself like one of these - - - (thanks Windows Vista) - - -selling meself

I think I want to get high.

I want it all and I want it now.

The irony of JHK's "Long Emergency" rings true - because of the slow pace of collapse events, we are unable to muster the courage (individually or collectively) to change. Sure, there are disasters, etc. - but when you're part of a collapse event, you're unlikely to suddenly steer out of it. And the rest of those who are not part of the particular collapse event that nailed you, are even more unlikely to see your plight.

"This morning, elite opinion (Paul Krugman, NYT) has officially joined Kunstler and other pessimists/doomers."

Yikes. Krugman has been about as delusional as you can get- the most hard-core advocate for the establishment solution to heal the economy:

just print dollars up the yin yang and drop them out of helicopters

I look forward to reading Krugman's article. If someone so entrenched in his delusions as Krugman has changed his thinking, that would be a positive development.

The writings on the wall, read it or not. The powers that be are setting up for the next 9/11 shock. Cheney did an excellent job of finding a way for us to "go all out" in the middle east, and Obama's team is working overtime to prepare the next phase. It's obvious that this time it will be on a much larger scale and likely cross borders.

The history books might already be written in some covert CIA or NSA office. "The global economy was back on track when a shocking and unexpected outbreak of (fill in the blank) killed 4 billion people in less than a decade. This strain was particularly deadly to all non-aryans." or how about "Oil was moving flawlessly around the globe until the (who do we want to attack next) launched a nuclear missile into the strait of hormuz, leaving it a dead zone unnavigable by the giant oil tankers.

Laura Louzader:

You're forgetting that with the collapse your boogeymen of religious restrictions on family planning and abortion will likely become moot.

Without easily accessible healthcare, municipal sanitation, and the host of other modern life extending accoutrements, mortality will likely skyrocket.

Does anyone think measles, smallpox, polio, and all the other mostly irradicated in the first-world diseases won't make a comback? Some of them already are.

Time will be that people return to having as many children as they can in hopes that a reasonable number survive to adulthood. Plus, you'll need them to help on the farm.

I mean...that IS what we're talking about things returning to, isn't it?

Laura,

Like I said in my previous post, the Powers-that-Be have set up our society for the "hard crash" scenario rather than planning ahead for the crisis that is obviously coming (or happening).

Back in the mid 1970's we discovered any beyond reasonable doubt that our oil "endowment" was rapidly depleting and it would be only a matter of time before the "easy to get" oil was pulled out of the ground leaving only the much more expensive, lower grade oil and oil sands.

About the same time a report out of Rome showed us that our sheer population numbers were getting well out of hand and that immediate action was needed to curb fertility and bring population levels back into sustainable levels.

However, in the 1980's it was "Morning in America" and the wheels of globalization and Industrial Civilization only started spinning faster with no regard to the limits of our small planet and its many inhabitants.

Rather than anticipating the severe constraints that would soon be brought on by peak oil, peak water and peak minerals as well as climate change and extinction of untold species coupled with unprecedented population growth the ruling elites just kept on the track of expanding the global economy at all cost.

Now the time has come to pay the piper and the "credit card" has been maxed out. The sustainable carrying capacity of the planet for humans is in severe overshoot and will have to contract severely, by possibly 90 percent, in order to get back into equilibrium. However, since we enjoyed such a delightful "Morning in America" and throughout the "developing" world we are going to have to endure a hell of an afternoon in America, I'm afraid.

Family planning and contraception could have gone a long way to mitigating our current problems, if implemented in a timely manner i.e. back in the 1970's. However, at this late stage of the game, I'm not sure it would help that much. When you're already staring into the abyss and most of the nation is still "sleepwalking into the future" it is hard to envision anything but a total breakdown of the world as we know it.

I read The Long Emergency when it first came out and thought it was right on the mark. I also enjoyed World Made by Hand, but was surprised by the “post-crash” depiction of life consisting of simple living (for the most part) and happy gardening. But reading your weekly blogs confirm my belief that JHK willfully misunderstands the REALITY of our situation. What’s astonishing is that JHK continues to be astonished by what the Obama administration does, or doesn’t do. (I believe he would call that… feckless) These people understand perfectly what they are doing, and they are doing it by design. If JHK put a little effort into researching what he labels as “conspiracy theories” he would no longer be astonished on a daily basis by what “these people” are doing. Presidents are selected not elected. If you were offered a job that would provide you with, (i) cult-like worshiper/followers; (ii) more money than you can ever spend; (iii) celebrity status wherever you go; (iv) fulfillment of every desire; and (v) Secret Service protection for the rest of your life, you would do the job the way your boss wants you to; wouldn’t you?

I began my search for the truth with James Howard Kunstler’s TLE. It’s disappointing that he hasn’t figured it out yet. The last documentary I watched was Fall of the Republic. I let the empirical evidence stack up then draw my own conclusions as to what’s really going on. All of you should do the same.

P.S. If you don’t think the climate change bill, carbon credits, etc. is a conspiracy then you must be down right ignorant. The rich get richer…

Obama is not a victim of unfortunate timing. Obama is here exactly at the right time. He is the false specter of hope that shatters the last illusion of hope. We are careening from image to image: from Reagan(through Bush I) to Clinton to Bush II to Obama to ....? Fishtailing wildly down the road.

Obama's rhetoric was all about hope but his campaign contributors were all about the status quo. He has become the false signifier - coopted manufactured hope that never really had a chance of being enacted.

He is necessary. Also inevitable. A natural part of the cycle. He will shatter the remnants of illusions of hope.

The only question is which way do we steer next? Do we press "restart" and clean the slate, or do we descend to some sort of fascist despair.

I have been thoroughly frustrated trying to short the S & P 500 for the last few months. With PE multiples at levels reflecting a booming economy the markets are completely disconnected from reality. Makes me wonder if "the savior" hasn't made a deal with wall street giving them all the money they want in exchange for a bull market.

It's probably more likely that WS is running on illusion and TARP and stimulus money. With the G20 desperate to keep the illusion alive they've signaled ever more paper money printing into the foreseeable future.

However, I think Robert Prechter has it right, social mood drives everything. Can't know what will change the mood on WS, just that when it does it will occur suddenly and with great force.

Folks

Not to upset ,many of you. I realize that political correctness is a powerful tool to stifle
the expression of opinions, mostly conservative opinions. But many of the comments on this blog do not have anything to do with reality.

Obama does not represent Hope and Change. He represents Marxism. The only way that the American economy can survive is to make massive cuts in spending. By that I mean, cut out SS, Medicare, Medicaid and most of the entitlement programs. Just look at the numbers.

Also I read alot of comments about right wing nuts. Over the pst 100 years most of the mass killings have been done by the left, not the right. The reality is the Hitler was a leftist, he was not on the right politicaly.

Look at the huge problem the news media is having telling the simple truth about the shooter at Fort Hood. The shooting at Fort Hood was a well planned Terrorist attack by a Muslim. This is not hard to figure out. Why the media and government lies?
Because some people will believe the government.

Did anyone see the inital reaction that Obama had to the shooting? What planet is this man on? He does not even pretend to care

"Doesn't anybody carpool?"

How many people were in your car?

I read Laura Lozader and noticed something which reminded me again I didn't make my point, which is this (and I'm still posting. I have to go break the Restraining Order and have sex with my wife):

The writers, skilled or elementary, will direct your attention to one side of a rather irrelevant observable:

I saw a Jew.
I didn't see a Jew.

Take your pick. I go:

I seen a Jew, so I sez to him, "You look like David Cross," and I lift the guy's baseball hat off his head and stand towering over him so's he hasta step back. I breathe some onions on him. He says he never heard of him. He's watching his kid play wit' my kid, but his kid's onie 'tree. He's bald. I put the hat back right where it goes. "He's a famous comedian, whaddaya never hearda him? You look jus' like him, I'm tellin' you." "I'm from Isreal. Maybe that's why." I say, "Yeah, yeah. Maybe so.". Anyhow, we get to talking and I try out my idea on him: "Wull, remember Jurassic Park? "Yes." Got him. "Uh, well, if Hitler woulda succeeded they woont be obtaining dinosaur DNA to bring back dinosaurs. They might be obtaining Jewish DNA to bring back Jews. It'd be a whole different movie."

See, and this shit of slipping hatred into the way you frame people for shit they didn't do and besmirch their character, oh, that is all the rage on the Internet.

People tend, Louzader?

The Puzzler is much better. If he had a little more substantial theme, he'd be one of the swingers on this planet. He'd be a Sultan of Swing, like

Jim Gibbons (U. S. politician) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaGibbons served in the Nevada State Assembly from 1989 to 1993, ..... In January 2007, Governor Gibbons asked Nevada lawmakers to approve his budget that cut ...

(Gibbons are apes that swing in trees or enclosures, now. You've heard of Harry Reid. well, you're superficial. Don't skim or surf, read).

It isn't, tell 'em, Kunstler (and I can't even imagine what a group of New Urbanists looks like. How do you tell who's got the coke?):

"It isn't PLANETIZEN. Say something about my mother, because I am going to beat you about the head and neck and commandeer your BMW. I see in your wallet your address appears. I got a photographic memory. It's in here now (taps head). it's PLANETITIZEN. You are all afraid of saying 'tit'. This movement's going nowhere fast."

"The Beck/Palin nihilists want civil war for its own sake."

I don't know of a single soul who wants civil war much less these two public figures whose every move is monitored by hundreds in the press. Care to give a single example, walt, of when either of these two, that you cite, has ever expressed any wish for a civil war? I thought not because you can not. (Asshole)

Oh yeah, I read about him in Mumford. Burkhardt's (sp? mine is closer than your though) "terrible simplifiers" will come. Mumford said they are inevitable when a people refuse to face reality and act. A point quite different than what you are saying. Liberalism has become just communism that hasn't fully grown up. As such, liberals hate their fellow Americans and feel morally superior for doing so. Yet we are the ones who were right all along about the Federal Reserve and the danger posed by the Federal Goverment. You are all Johnny Come Latelys. As your IRA's dwindle you will hold on even tighter to your hatred and shreds of your wholly imaginary dignity. You were wrong about Obama, multiculturalism, the Federal Goverment, the welfare state-just about everything. Back when Liberalism was still sane, Daniel Patrick Moynihan told you all the truth in his report about how welfare was destroying the Black Family. But in your pride you didn't listen. A man like that couldn't get elected today in either "party".

The Elite are above designations such as Right and Left. It's just like professional wrestling: a wrestler is a bad guy in one state and a good guy in another. But they are all friends in the locker room.

"As their disappointment mounts, their childish ideas will turn cruel and sadistic. They'll seek to punish anybody who believes that the earth is more than six thousand years old."

This hits the nail on the proverbial head. When delusions are thwarted among psychotic psychiatric patients, that's when you better be careful and not turn your back. Throwing water on a delusional idea, especially in a way that utterly demolishes the idea (which is what reality is about to do) will always yield an aggressive response. The delusional masses, when they are hit in the face with the end of cheap oil and the end of cheap happy motoring and all that accompanies it, will turn very very cruel and sadistic and they will elect people who are cruel and sadistic, and who will target whatever group gives satisfaction and a focus to the angst of the masses. Remember that Hitler was not elected due to the happiness and contentment of the German people. Here we go again.

Wardoc

"I think the worst thing this country could face in the foreseeable future would be a swing to the radical right..."

Guess what fucktard, the state we are in and the ridiculous direction we are headed is being ushered in by the extreme radical left. If there is a "swing" it will be a deserved swing. Remember Obama's promise of change? Well its here and the peoples ain't buying.

A positive development? Al contraire, mein Herr. It shows how terrible things really are. It is going to be really hard for the Zionists and NeoCons now. They are going to be very sad and bitter: they fully expected to suck America dry and simultaneously use her to conquer the World. Or in other words, simultaneously destroy her and ride her to victory. Sad, silly, little men-the world is a big place-you never had a chance. No matter-they will go someplace else and start the whole cycle all over again. But we are sadder and sillier still-we let them do it. Many good men tried to warn us-like the John Birch Society-but we listened to the pundits (who worked for the Elite) and laughed them to scorn.

Walt:

What are you talking about Civil War?
Where do you get that from.

This nation is $14 trillion in short term debt and Obama is pushing national health care and cap and trade. It is impossible to believe that these two programs will not have massive costs to the U.S economy. It is not rational. Obama does not represent hope, he respresents staggering spending forced on an economy that cannot support it.

On another note, the Boston Globe, a liberal paper mentioned, Obama's completly disrespectful
reaction the the shooting at FT Hood. He did not care and was trying to pretend that he cared but did not pull it off.

Nice post Jim.

I agree with you about the constant glossing over of the dismal current unemployment statistics. Another interesting point is how our current rates are compared to unemployment rates of the early 1980s—the early 80s were tough, but not like it is today. I believe that our current crisis is much worse and more severe now given that there were still many one-income families in the early 1980s that interestingly provided more slack in the family households. Families did not pay for childcare and after school programming as they do with wild abandon today. So, if dad or mom loses their IT job today--some families might wisely take junior out of daycare, but most stay the course with the belief that they can find work within a month or two all the while the credit card bills mount up by just trying to keep the status quo in household expenses. The family support networks have been atrophied out of existence. The empty nesters have flown to sunny places taking them away from the close proximities of their children and grandchildren, so they are not available to take up the slack during hard times. Decaying communities and civic culture has turned everyone’s "neighbors" into faceless entities that are only consulted with when a tree needs felling. There is no slack in the American home anymore—everyone and everything is at capacity at all times, and the slightest hiccup can bring families to their knees.

Not to upset ,many of you. I realize that political correctness is a powerful tool to stifle

unquote

Without thinking, I can go you one better, and how about you not upsetting any of us, because, you all-American, bullet-headed, Saxon mother's son, I take any attacks on any of these people personally. "upset". You don't eyeball me, mister. We are corresponding, back and forth, back and forth (does the back-and-forth ting with the hand).

Alright. I live on this planet, see? Therefore, without going into details, this does not rise to the level of a terrorist attack. This, my friend, was a garden-variety nutcase mass murder. No government resources should or could be spent tracking down Al Qaeda on this. If you want coordinated, just wait.

Now the details. There exists a page, and on that page, Kunstler goes into perhaps his finest hour, in 1992, when he is lashing the Disney Corporation to a degree I have never personally witnessed before, and many have tried. He is saying how the line ride at Disney World appears not to have people outside, but the line is compressed within the structue. This is precisely the mind's eye view of the facilities at Fort Hood. I'm psychic, and I was on that page. And then the echo shooting occurs in the actual venue, Orlando, FL.

And, in the passion of discovery, I have and am not sharing, how this worked, because the human race has pissed me off by now. Am not going to have people like you with a full breath to let loose on us for being scientists. You didn't appreciate when you had it good, insects.

Our leaders promote the status quo because for them it seems the safest course. The status quo is comfortable, unthreatening. In a new order, will I be an important person, wonders the politico. Maybe not, so the status quo wins. And real change gets short-circuited, even if it would provide a better solution overall.
One of the reasons we, the public, are so easy to dupe is that we retain the quaint notion that our leaders have the capacity for selflessness. It certainly ought to be that way. In fact, a measure of demonstrated selflessness ought to be required for a person to even be a leader. Alas, our leaders are average at best.

She's not half bad-one woman who sometimes posts thinks that White America is getting stronger and stronger as it has fewer and fewer children. Her reasoning: the fewer children the better educated they can be. And thus the better jobs and more power. All true. But that's just one priciple-it is balanced out by others. By her reasoning White America will arrive at the acme of power when there are no Whites left. Call it the homeopathic approach to demography. I was so stunned by the magnitude of her denial, that I couldn't even respond at the time.

Demography is destiny. A people whose rate of reproduction is below replacement will cease to exist. The last few Whites may be very rich but most of their power will have gone to the new people-the people who actually have children. And if those Whites want to keep any power at all-or property, they will go along with the program; gracefully sliding to extinction. Their last few sons and daughters will marry the new colored elite and that will be the End. The end of Whites and their Civilization, also called Western Civilization. Certainly the end of America which was a White, Western Civilization. Your not going to have alot of Democracy (so called) with the people who are coming here now. Nor science. Nor social services. These are all Western Things.

A caveat: the Japanese and the Singapore Chinese have adapted some of these things to their own systems. And now they have some of the same problems too.

Not only do I completely agree with you, dale (AAAAIIIIEEEE!! Omen of imminent apocalypse!), but that was truly a "hammer-nail-head" comment.

Oh yeah, while I'm on the subject, I seem to recall OEO instructing me to be sure and tell everybody when the "real anti-Semites" arrive. Here they are. Did I do good, did I, did I, huh, huh???

Jim,It must be hard every Sunday or Monday to come up with your beginning of the week blog and try to write something new knowing that you will be faced with praise and ridicule. Some of these comments are pretty fine and I try to skip over the ad hominem anti semitic ones. It is a shame that the lies and misrepresentations of the last 8 years are continuing with the new administration and the obvious conclusion is that the casino is rigged and changing faces at the crap tables doesn't change the fact that big corporations, big finance, insurance and real estate interests control what flows out of the beltway colon.Cash for clunkers? Our paper reported that people didn't trade in F150 guzzlers for priuses, they traded in F150s getting 16 mpg for new F150s getting 19 mpg. Today it was reported that the 640000 jobs created for $218 billion spent so far may not be true after all. 90% of the jobs were supposed to be private sector and it appears that 50% so far are private sector and one other thing: it seems that the administration counts as a job if the money went to raises for those public sector employees. The formula they use to calculate a job created is mystical and chimerical. Even if you believe the bogus number, when I divide money spent by jobs I get $340,625 per job "created". Seems a bit high to me. I would like to offer some criticism of your figures and assumptions. The earth is 4000 years old, not 6000. Please check your facts. And you will have to decide whether we face an inflationary or deflationary future. Money cannot be both scarce and worthless at the same time. It can be worthless if the gobmint can print it fast enough but if we face a deflationary meltdown with contracting credit and expanding debt defaults which seems likely, then currency could become king if you have any. It seems that as fast as the fed and treasury are creating greenbacks, it is nowhere near fast enough to keep up with pyramid of collapsing debt which stands in the mid $50 TRILLION of which gobmint debt is only about $15 Trillion. I am ignoring the other classes of impossibly high debt numbers if you include all the various derivatives out there, the phony numbers for bank debt etc. Not even Tim and Larry can print money that fast. So my advice besides seeking to pay off your debt and lay in wheat berries and beans is to try to have some cash or gold on hand as you will need it in a deflation. Some other figures this week are curious. ASPO reports oil consumption down 4.4% from year ago figures but that decline has been only in diesel and jet fuel. Gasoline consumption has held steady, even as unemployment has climbed to somewhere between 17 and 22%. Sorry you hard working $80,000/year federal workers at BLS, none of us believe %10.2.
Finally Jim, I think that things will have to get a whole lot worse before the mobs start filling up coke bottles with gasoline and pitching them through windows in the Hamptons and Rodeo Drive. The rage level is still way too low. We will need a lot more inertia and hopelessness before we get to the point where we were 100 years ago with bomb tossing anarchists although as some have noted, beck and palin are coming pretty close.Ah, life at the end of empire....It's going to get pretty messy. As James M Greer states in one of his books, some situations ARE "problems" and some are "predicaments." Problems may have solutions. But predicaments may not have solutions. From my vantage this debt fueled misallocation of resources has no real solution. It will play out. There is no stopping it and it will be messy.

Good comments this week!

The co-housing movement and the simple living movement and the tiny house movement are all signs this is beginning to happen. A positive sign.

Lynn: great diet ideas. I would eliminate the milk and cheese, but that's just me.

Laura: yes, population must come down. That is why I got a vasectomy at age 19 and decided not to have children as a sacrifice for Mother Earth.

Andrew: You may be right that most are unable or unwilling to steer out of it, but some are willing... see co-housing comment above.

Draffen: It was Morning in America and at this time in Reagan's presidency Reagan had the same approval rating as Obama has now.

Montana Joe: isn't it comforting to have The Truth? Does it worry you to have The Truth and not have Secret Service protection?

Saxon: you want to eliminate SS, Medicare, and entitlement programs? If you want to cut government spending, go after the biggest spenders: the military budget, the CIA budget, and the VA. Cut all those life-long benefits and cut the military/weapons useless welfare programs, too.

zzzzz: Reagan and Obama have the same ratings as Reagan had in Oct. 1981. So, I would say the people are buying it.

dale and loveandlight: ditto. Good comments.

I'm for population control too btw. But my point: Whites have been at the replacement level and below for two generation now. We aren't the problem: the Third World is. We can't save them-but we could have saved ourselves if we had kept them out. But greedy Big Business and power mad Democrats and Liberals sought short term gain. Now we're screwed unless we can stop the influx and make alot of the ones already here go away.

It's all very simple and clear if one's head is free from ideology. The problem is that people feel guilty and want America to die along with the rest of the world. Yes we have been immoral in our dealing with the Third World, but dying isn't going to help them now either. And another angle: when we say we it really just means the Elite and their Corporations. Neither I nor You have harmed the Third World. Why should we go down just because of their Evil? Sure we've used their products and that's a kind of culpability, but it was unconscious or because nothing else was available. Our guilt is far, far less than anything that would require our self immolation.

I am surprised that I have never seen it pointed out here, that one of the best ways to be prepared for a future with less fossil fuels, is to live in a small community that was a.) Established before 1900, and b.) Has not undergone drastic changes from Interstate Highway incursions. The country is full of these smaller communities. Sure the downtown areas of them are now little more than Karate schools Hair Salons, and Curves franchises, but the "bones" are there just waiting to be brought back to life when the time comes. Many still have the railroad tracks passing through. Many also have the surrounding farms that will surely be needed.

During the first Great Depression, the family safety net was more or less intact, although many families did indeed fracture and break. But our expectations were different and certainly our priorities were as well. Anyone care to speculate about how our young people today will fare when their electronic lives are over and their facebook skills don't translate well into the real world?

The social safety net that was put into place as a way to mitigate the hardships of the Great Depression has been under attack from the right (who got their money the old fashioned way - inherited it or worked a job the Great Society supported) for decades now. (I personally don't want to see Grandma freeze to death in the dark with her last can of dog food empty by her chair, especially now that I am a Grandma!)

All empires end; all great social and government experiments end. Out of the ashes will rise something new, but not painlessly and not quickly. It is patently obvious that the forces of darkness that are lead by Rush, Sarah and Glenn (et. al.) want to go back to a world that never existed outside of mythology - Father Knows Best, Mrs. Cleaver (who was a working mom).

But putting the extended family back together would go along way towards saving the best of what can be saved. Your parent weren't perfect (no one's are), but they have already made their major mistakes and are usually willing to do a better job with the grandkids. It sure the hell beats baking in the sun, listening to Rush, and playing shuffleboard.

Combining generational resources might just mean there are a few resources left to pass along down the line. (It has worked well for lots of families that rule the financial roost these days.)

And different generations bring different coping and life skills to the mix. And that has historically upped the chances for survival and success for the family unit (and the social unit).

What is coming down the road from both reality and history will not be fun; the good times (the ones without an obvious pricetag) are over. But living well can be done by those willing to live smart. And having a tribe around you related by blood, affection, and common purpose is one of those tried and true tactics that has stood the test of time - for far longer than 6,000 years!

ASOKA:

thanks for the comment.
I do not want to cut SS, Medicare and Medicaid. But the country cannot afford it. It is just numbers. Look at the numbers, those three programs alone will keep the printing presses working overtime. The simple fact is that these programs will go away. It is not an emotional issue nor political. The country is simply printing money to keep the lights on. When it is all said and done economics will drive the nation. Obamas stimulus programs will not work. The economic probelms will not be solved by throwing money at the economy. The economy has to be rebuilt from the ground up. This is a process that will take 15 years and the nations standard of living will be considerably lower. Most of the entitlements will go away simply because there will be no money to pay for it.

Reality is in the numbers. No amount of emotion or political passions can ignor the numbers.
The U.S was in a downward spiral and Obama's spending will not change that direction.

Oh no, not the onion breath. Anything Abu Ghraib thing but that. And lifting the guy's cap off-did you rub his bald head for good luck? Why the hell not? If you break your restraining order they may put you in restraints. Refrain.

You are right: Political Correctness is, not only homegrown Communism, but also a form of Victorianism. Yes they are afraid to say tit. As if a tit mouse will roar. Perhaps it will, after all Ganesha rides a mouse. Carrying an elephant god takes strength. Grand Fenwick conquers de Vorld.

onthego said: "Your parent weren't perfect (no one's are)"

Doesn't matter whether parents are perfect or not: they all manage to fulfill the purpose of the family unit, which is to transmit the dominant culture's pathology to the children.

It can be done verbally or nonverbally, but parents will transmit the sick values of the church, the school, the state, the military, etc. to their children. I was taught it is necessary to kill people I don't even know, that it is necessary to go into the army (my father said: "they will teach you discipline") to learn efficient means of killing people I do not know.

The main thing is to obey orders, respect authority (parental, police, and otherwise) and don't rock the boat. That is what the family teaches by example and by word.

The nuclear family is the primary means of maintaining a sick society by indoctrinating children with its values.

Whatever Seb is on I want some...

Your illusions have to go along with everything else. The safety net has become a steel spider web choking the life out of real people and families-mostly to benefit the new people brought here to replace us. The stated goal of the Left is to destroy the family so just cut that crap right off. It's in the Communist Manifesto as well as every hip commentator in every hip free weekly paper. And it's in your post as well.

Nope, no more women having children and making other people pay for it. No more having the State as your husband. You got get a real one, yes a man horrors of horrors. And you have to try to get along with him-no more throwing him out of his own home and making him pay ransom for the next twenty years. No more feminism-get along with men or you don't reproduce. End of story. Hey I'm starting to like this fall of Civilization stuff. And the new Civilization rising from the ashes will be Patriarchial. Matriarchy? That dog don't hunt. Sure you can try it-you just wont be able to compete with Patriarchial Families for resources. Not without non existent goverment handouts.

Just for the record....when you are NOT talking about race you are far more interesting than when you are. You might consider that ideology, always the enemy of reason, makes you stupid.

As an island dweller in the supposed safe NW (Canada), I have been lurking over these posts for some time. Last week I told my wife that the posts were getting out of hand....getting too wacky. This week seems more focused.

I do have a concern, but maybe it is way out there, too. If so, I am sure the posts will correct me. I would worry about 'accidents'. When people rail on about the corrupted powers, you are pulling on the tails of some very protective interests.

The crooks have a lot to lose and their resources are many....their influence is wide.

As a Canadian, (ex American), I have been astounded at how the American people trust their Govt., as if what they see on public display is any indication of what lies underneath the politicians or system, itself. We have all witnessed the US meddling in world affairs as a divine right, pillaging the spoils for the blue haired voters. If a country is able to take out other countries, is public discourse enough of a shield to protect authors? I would be wary.

Every morning I turn on CBC and listen for the defining incident that will be setting 'things' in motion, much like the 9/11 broadcasts that dried up traffic in all towns. Will it be an attack on Iran? Another crash? I think we will recognize it when it happens.

Meanwhile, I would be careful making extreme posts. The little people are expendable.

Cheers from the wet coast

The only quibble I have is with the cash for clunkers statement:
For now, a cashless government gives out cash-for-clunkers, which is basically a self-esteem building program designed to make the government feel better about itself because it is ostensibly taking 11-miles-per-gallon cars off the road and replacing them with 27-miles-per-gallon cars

At least here is Texas the majority of trade-ins were old very low mileage pick ups for new pickups with only 1 - 3 miles more to the gallon, certainly not 27 mpg vehicles!

Visited a nascent teaparty chapter here by the train tracks last week. Suggested "Situational Awateness" as posited by Jeff Cooper... Applied Cooper's thinking process to consideration of limits on motor fuel. Not well received, but gave them Lionel Badal's paper and talked about what happens when Big Government goes away. Local gangs happen. Extortion(See "SPECTRE"). As in border gangs & NYC little Italy 100 years ago. Godfather Movie -Vito's story- should be seen by all hands promoting end of government intrusion. Power corrupts on the way down too.

Seems anyone should be able to comprehend rehab of the ubiquitous rail branchline network would bring along rationale & reality of Sheriff level security in communities with rail interface, passenger and freight.. JHK and others talking trains, find a copy of the OFFICIAL GUIDE of The Railways, circa 1920-1950, and get familiar with your locale's legacy rail footprint. More details, see tahoevalleylines postings in TOD, etc. See peakoil.net articles 374 & 1037.

Spreckel's Pacific Electric transport SYSTEM methodology is good for oil Interregnum model: daytime passenger, night freight & victuals delivery to midtown terminals. PE ran on Hoover's Hydropower. New generation renewable link to rr is seen in Swan's compendium: ELECTRIC WATER" (New Society Press, 2007). Swan also emphasizes renewable electric generation at the residential level, to lessen dependence on the regional grid. These approaches to mobility & energy are desireable in disaster/attack scenario.

The teaparty movement will dry up unless they include knowledgeable participation in the new enrgy/transport paradigm. Are they wise as well as passionate?

I think Jim has been very astute in his warnings of the potential for some very ugly social-political upheavals as the consumer economy and its corresponding lifestyle unravel at an increasing rate. However, I find it ironic that Jim seems to constantly hold out the "corn-pone Hitler" boogie man as the the greatest danger, while at the same time predicting hordes of bankrupt Americans marching out to the Hamptons to torch the mansions of Wall Street execs and assassinations of Goldman Sachs employees as they leave the office for the day. This sort of neo-Bolshevism is what is truly scary. "The people", unemployed and ruined financially rising up overthrow the rich, the capatalists, the bankers, the captains of industry, we've seen this before in Russia in 1917, when the forces of the left (well admired by many in the American intellectual and artistic community at the time)overthrew "the rich" and 60 years of dictatorship, gulags, and poverty followed. And if that's too far back in ancient history for you, consider the current nightmare of starvation and brutality in Zimbabwe --until recent years one of Africa's biggest agricultural producers-- which has resulted following left wing socialist president Robert Mugabe's exhortations for Zimbabwean's to rise up and burn down the homes of rich white farmers and run them off their lands (and often kill them). Now the once productive fields sit fallow, and the people starve. These are the sorts of disasters that follow the rise of "get the rich" demagogues. As the history of the 20th century shows, the rule of left wing despots has been infinitely more frightening than the rule of right-wing despots, and we have alot more to fear from the "power to the people" neo-bolshevist crowd than from the corn-pone bible thumpers like Beck and Palin.

Onthego, it is rare to find someone who knows of the Great Depression. Do you, too, remember the games we played during the pre-internet Depression days, when Crayolas helped us spend our time?

Do you remember the other games we played back then: marbles, jacks, jigsaw puzzles, checkers, dominoes, tiddlywinks, etc.?

Do you care to speculate about how games we played as young people during the Depression fared? Did they translate well into the real world?

Do games need to be preparing you for the real world? What about play for play's sake? What about purposeless fun? Does everything have to be prostituted as preparation for "reality"?

I swear the real world (the topic of JHK's post this week) is highly overrated. I enjoy reality, but only go there to visit.

Where I live, here and now, leela is the order of the day.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lila

It is all divine fun and games, all the time. bahmi described this succinctly and correctly last week: frivolity and jollies through CFN.

Yet, some get angry at games playing, as if the real world was a "serious" play where "serious" laws, like the laws of physics, are in control.

What a hoot!

Agent:

Be still my beating heart. You have nailed it.
The threat is greater from the left than the right. Ever since Karl Marx and his flawed economic and political philosophy the world has been suffering with a string of left wing mass murderers. And for the 100th time Hitler was a leftist, (National Socialist Party)he was not on the right side of the political spectrum.

When Hitler came to power in the early 1930's many of the things he said were ignored or not taken seriously. People like Churchill were screaming the alarm only to be insulted by the
liberals in England and the unfortunate Chamberlin. Old Nevil may have spoken the single
stupidest line in the history of mankind , with his peace in our time after meeting with Hitler.

My hat's off to you. You are correct and expect a backlash over your comments.

Draffen, how well I remember the oil shortages of the 70s and how obvious it was becoming that we were in resource overshoot.

I was very influenced by the Club of Rome's report, but I had hopes that my own generation of "liberated" women would steeply reduce their reproduction rates. For a while, it looked like that would happen, as a large % of my age cohort turned their backs on procreation and others elected to have much smaller families, at a much later stage of life.

Then came Reagan's era, and the revival of Family Values thanks to the influence of the religious right. Let me tell you that the 80s were not golden. To me, it was the 50s all over again- the return to a specious "normalcy"- stay-at-home moms with numerous offspring and all that, except that the prosperity of the 80s was fake, or felt so to me. All it really was, was much greater household debt loads against the backdrop of falling wages, entire industries moving offshore, and rapidly-rising household debt levels. But since the jobs lost were mostly blue-collar, no one paid much attention, and many people rode high on the ascendancy of finance, which should have been seen as a symptom of malaise in itself.

I remember that the quality of the food available at the supermarkets deteriorated, especially poultry. I thought, this is a symptom of overpopulation in itself. I remember when the option mortgages were born so that people could borrow 4X their income for houses instead of the traditional, cautious 2.5X. Housing suddenly became much more expensive relative to incomes. It was obvious then to anyone who looked that we were becoming a poor and overcrowded country.

Then we experienced the S&L debacle, an early warning that our financial system and the underlying economy were deteriorating, but the pols stepped in with bailout funding, thus creating a massive moral hazard and setting us up for the current debacle.

As far as I'm concerned, Malthus was proved correct by 1980, especially if you consider how many more people are living in deep poverty worldwide now than 3 decades ago. The ratio of people living in 4th world shantytown-on-open-sewer poverty to those living with any sort of comfort or amenity at all is higher than it's ever been. Nearly every prediction made by the Club of Rome has come to pass, and you have to wonder just how long it will be before the expanding population of THIS country, still increasing at 5% a year, crosses with the depleting oil, gas, land, and water resources to make us a nation of sewage-filled favellas with no electricity, no access to clean water.... and hardly any access to contraceptives. I am not encouraged by the current high cost of contraceptives or tubal ligation, which are now priced almost beyond the means of the working poor, who need it the most. These are the people who are too "rich" to qualify for Medicaid but too broke to spare the $100 a month the contraceptives commonly cost.

I'm glad I'm way past the age where I have to worry about it, for a fact.

does anyone walk?

JHk in his book said ' not in saratoga, they are too busy smokin and eatin mc muffins to walk'

I remember making bumper stickers and t-shirts for Obama supporters during the election. The entire time I kept thinking to myself that nothing of significance will change with him as president. Sure, Bush and that bigger scumbag Cheney were about the most loathsome people you could have in the White House (well, except for maybe Sarah Palin), but there's no real difference between the Dems and Rethugs. Compared to the Rethugs that make the most noise and open their mouths the most, Dems usually come off as more likable people and part of the human race. However, both parties are owned by Wall Street and the Military industry. As long as they can profit from such stupidity, we will stay in these inane wars. End of story.

Laura, I agree the cost of contraceptives and tubal ligation are too high. They should be subsidized. They could be paid for by scrapping some of the military welfare for useless weapons systems.

Vasectomies are also too high: $500 to $1000 if you don't have health insurance.

In Canada, provincial health plans cover vasectomy. As a result, patient out of pocket expenses are relatively minor.

Were an American to undergo a vasectomy in Canada expected fees range from $CAN 400 to $CAN 600 (approximately $USA 320 - $570, depending upon currency fluctuations).

Great column Jim! My Monday mornings are much easier to deal with knowing that I have weekly access to your sophisticated opinions.

The Obama government has made itself hostage to a toxic form of pretense and lying...They're flat-out lying about the employment figures issued in the government's name.

Of course we know that our government lies to us about a lot of things. However, we know that our government has never lied about the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. This is an established fact!

Will these idiot conspiracy freaks ever wake up?

HAHAHA! Good one schizoid!

I have to say I definitely disagree with Jim on the events of 911. It's amazing that a guy who can put the whole peak oil picture together cannot seem to do it with 911. Maybe it's his being Jewish and their whole victim mentality, especially in anything involving Arabs.

"Maybe it's his being Jewish and their whole victim mentality"

I have noticed that same thing when I visit Indian reservations. They seem to have a victim mentality just because White European males slaughtered, oh, around 15 million of them. These people and their victim mentalities... sheesh!

GeorgeHayduke wrote:

So what's your problem? Are you having trouble accepting the conclusions of the 911 commission that advocate the temporary suspension of the laws of physics?

Building 7 (which was never hit by an aircraft) collapsed at free-fall speed. Resistance is futile, as the old saying goes. It's as simple as that!

George Bush said that he saw the first plane hit the North Tower as he was watching a television located in the hall of a Florida school! As we all know, George Bush never lies!

Oh, I almost forgot. Jet fuel can melt steel! Yes indeed!

You have to WANT to believe that our government is incapable of lying to us! And I WANT to believe!

That's all there is to it. Really.

Apparently, Jim also WANTS to believe.

I like JHK's message, and I want to believe that we are going to return to more sane, environmentally-friendly, localized economies.

However, there are just too many "positive economic indicators" to suggest this is going to happen in the near future.

While most people in this forum don't want to believe it, the economy is slowly turning around.

Looks like another growth cycle is approaching. Might as well make the most of it.

I love the creation of words that butcher the rules of grammar in the English language. It is rampant even amongst very intelligent highly educated people. One more thing in our culture that is deteriorating rapidly.

It pains me to hear words like: physicality; hopefulness; actionable; effectiveness; effectivity. The list could go on a long while. You get the idea. We seem intent on destroying everything for the sake of some convenient shortcut,

That said, Jim, I've always thought you had a gift for language and find your wit and imagery better than most writers, particularly on blogs.

"The Avatar of Hope." That is pure genius. That is the best description of Obama and his blind followers I have ever heard. But Jim, please do better than the shills, and psychophants and stop using words like hopefulness. You are much too smart to be doing that.

I turn from being an obnoxious language nanny to making a point I made last week.

Namely, there is a third America that is awakening politically and economically. It is a very positive development. I don't want to repeat myself. Check out my post from last week's blog, for a more comprehensive overview of the movement.

In the State Museum at Indianapolis there is a section on the Indians of North America. And a lovely quote by General (mad) Anthony Wayne about giving the measle blankets to the Indians, hoping that would help solve the problem.

There is also a huge display there of the changing tectonic plates of the planet with a marker for Indianapolis. The waves crash over, the plates move, the earth changes in billions of years. It's beautiful and terrifying to know how ancient this planet is. We are just a little blip in time.

ReedJHolmes said: "Looks like another growth cycle is approaching. Might as well make the most of it."

This cannot be! Our avatar of reality, JHK, has already stated that things will NOT be going back to normal. Normal would be a downturn, followed by a growth cycle, followed by a downturn, athen another growth cycle. But that normality is finished... at least that's what so many believe.

If we are indeed headed into another growth cycle, we had better prepare for the hard crash that is sure to follow: downsize, simplify, find community, garden, and enjoy life. It's a matter of leela.

I am old enough and remember enough to remember the day when we all went to the shore and filed up the gas tank in Camden (cheaper in NJ)for 11 cents a gallon.

So now gas is up over 200% and so is everything else. Or you could say more correctly, the dollar has fallen 200% since those days in the early 50's.

Your scenario is correct only if we return to that kind of agriculture. How about foraging instead. Learning what wild things grow that we can eat nutritiously.

If you farm then you must sell/barter produce and harvest for the winter. Does anyone think it is not going to be Mad Max? How will you protect what you have? You can't.

Nice zzzzzz.

Well if you had read my link last week with the long long quote in it, then you would have wonderful ammunition for this post. It's all there.

The entire history of left and write etc. BHL and Foucault. The liberal left is a corpse.

Change is not here. Obama was lying. Or he was telling the truth and changed his mind.

abbeysbooks,

Great comment! I have been to that museum in Indianapolis and I participated in a pow wow dance ceremony with the tribes in Anderson, Indiana.

You are right that it is such a blip in time we are here. All the more reason to stop worrying about what is to come and use that worry energy to make positive changes in our lives.

Whatever happens will happen... but it will be so much better to live through it if we have prepared ourselves (whether "it" is another horrible growth cycle or a hard landing complete with dollar devaluation).

If you can manage to be off the grid, energy independent, and in a community of people who know how to make things, grow things, live simply, and love each other; if we can cultivate an attitude of appreciation for one another and feel gratitude for having this rare opportunity to be incarnated as humans in this exciting time.

It is such a small life... jump higher, dance, take risks, live, love, and laugh in leela.

He has lost his sincerity and integrity. Go to enough of those stupid outings presidents go to and say speeches that are meaningless and you will turn into a puppet too.

This is what they do to teachers who must submit lesson plans 30 days in advance, and when they are observed they had better be on the page they said they would be on 30 days ago.Lock step education. And it doesn't work. I wonder why.

Read public pronouncements in the opposite and then you will be closer to the truth.

Yep, and how about cutting --or better yet, eliminating -- those 700 military bases we have around the world??

The very good reason that they are lying about unemployment figures is this:

A depression is defined by 10% unemployment or more. They are praying that no one will run with this stat.

A recession is defined by 2 negative quarters back to back.

Then there is the underground economy to consider. Like in Soviet times.

Abby:

You comment about measles on blankets given to Indians is just refering to a urban myth.

Never happened. In fact it would be impossible.
Measles and small pox may have been spread by blankets but the infections were not put on by the U.S army. It was a infection spread within
the Indian community once introduced with contact with white people. There were two individuals that are associated with the measles/small pox blanket story, Col. Bouguet and Captian Ecuyer. Both British. But there is no actual evidence that they did or tried to put these infections on blankets and give them to Indians. You could not do it an not expose your own men.

when I look at Barack and Rahm and David Axelrod, I seriously doubt I am smarter than these guys--therefore, there is a reason they are choosing to act as they are.

What is that reason? Oh--I don't know--maybe because anyone who messes with the ideal of the sacred "American Way of Life" gets crucified? Maybe because they are trying to buy time before an inevitable future descends that is so bad and so inexorable that any of the "preparations" likely to get through our hallowed Congress would be woefully inadequate?

BTW, I heard on NPR that a majority of the Cash For Clunkers purchases were exchanges of old Ford F150 pickups, for new Ford F150 pickups, with low single-digit improvements in mileage. so an even bigger joke on us, eh?

SEB's state of mind is a logical response to an incomprehensible world situation.

abbeysbooks if you bought gas at 11 cents per gallon and it now costs about 300 cents per gallon don't you mean to say the price has increased about 2700% (300/11*100 = 2727%) not 200%

Bridges:

Yep I am in favor of getting rid of most of the overseas bases. We spend alot of money doing other countries work. In about 90% of the cases we are not protecting anybody from anybody.
We do not have an interest that serves that American people in many of our overseas spending.

But , you could cut the military budget in half and it will not get you the reductions that will have a marked effect. The millstone around the American economy are the entitlements.

Asoka this site for co-housing is not very good. as you will notice all the homes in these communities are way over priced. The originals got in at the bottom, put in sweat equity and now want their profit.

You need to google intentional communities to find what you are writing about.

Try East Wind in Tecumseh MO for starters. There are good ones in MO, especially up orth. Dancing Rabbit is completely eco. EW not so much.

Don't think of it here as liberal suicide. It is economic and therefore is about cheap labor. That's all.

all the liberal propaganda is to play on guilt so you will let the cheap labor in. Some will always buy the propaganda. Like Asoka.

I live in one and it gets more dangerous every day. They are rural lumpen whites fully armed and angry. And ignorant. They no longer know how to grow anything and the mayor cuts down my garden two years in a row and I have to go to court to fight the bastard. They just made him resign but he has made it hell for me for 5 years now for my anti war windows, Obama bumper stickers etc.

The Hispanics are slowly moving in and this is crucial for the drug lords. As soon as there is a significant number of these families to provide cover, the drug lords move north. They are infiltrating now and I am in their sights. Because they know I see.

Doesn't matter whether parents are perfect or not: they all manage to fulfill the purpose of the family unit, which is to transmit the dominant culture's pathology to the children.

Asoka you are already into Foucault. Save yourself time, energy and enjoy the self affirmation you will get studying him. The family is evil as you will see from my quote last week on Sunday (at the end so not easy to miss).

If a country is able to take out other countries, is public discourse enough of a shield to protect authors? I would be wary.

The word in your quote to zone in on is discourse as this is the key. The definition of discourse is the life work of Foucault. And he is your mentor. Or should be on understanding what is going down.

According to Bernard-Henri Levy in War, Evil and the End of History and Left in Dark Times you are correct. We are in a window between fascism and socialistic totalitarianism. In other words a lose/lose choice. The window we are in is secular freedom for the moment that is diminishing.

Nice company you keep.

Yes jet fuel can melt steel and it can make a rock invisible. And glass. I know. It is one of the components in synthetic mescaline using the formula of a man named Makepeace (common Chinese name in Singapore).

We had leftover when we had to move and didn't want to transport it. We put it out in the meadow, in glass containers (3 gallons of synth mesc oh my beating heart ) and it just disappeared out in the sun. The rock, the glass, all of it. Nada.

Abbey:

I have gone back and read several of your posts from last week. I am afraid that you give me to much credit. My mind works in simple straight lines. I have been in the computer/ semiconductor business for 25 years. I have traveled the world and have a much simpler and less complicated way of looking at issues.

Break down problems to their core and find the cause and solutions.

You are more complicated than I.

Go to the museum and read his original order and signature. I think he expresses it as giving them the blankets in the hope of contagion. After all he was eventually known as Mad Anthony Wayne.

As Toynbee says in the part about disintegrating empires, the language deteriorates becoming more and more like the uneducated masses and barbarians.

Need I say more?

Drinking the kool aid I see.

I don't seriously doubt that I am smarter than they are.

Yes but I was rounding off as I didn't want to do the math. You are correct. Thanks for the correction. It makes it worse,eh?

You are the reason they are doing what they are doing. It's all smoke and mirrors and you are caught up. as long as people (masses of them) are caught up and hoping, they will be more docile while they wait. This will give others time to retrench, make other plans, etc. That way it won't all happen at once, but by degrees, and that will be more manageable.

Stop drinking the kool aid and save yourself.

Abbey:

Mad Anthony got his nickname during the Revolution. He recieved his nickname because he had a solder wipped .
He was involed in Indian wars much later in life. I do not know about the museum but there is not one piece of evidence that has ever been found that proves that anyone put anything on blankets.

Plus , how would soldiers in 1785 or that time frame put infections on blankets and then give them to indians? Indians died from measles and small pox they caught from white men through their interactions with them not through blankets. There is a great book called Guns, Germs and Steel that explains alot of this type of thing.

The more entitlements pile up, the less jumping into war. They are reciprocals. Reciprocal? Which is it?

Abbey:

I wish that were the case. Entitlements are a government bribe to a portion of the population, resourses taken from another portion of the population.

No you are correct. Take Foucault and analyze the discourse in Foucaultian terms, and we will see what we can and cannot say in the given discourse.

It really is quite simple but I get caught up in the false discourse as it is so compelling and so universal. And I am so used to it and so educated in it.

It is the outgoing paradigm as Kuhn would say in The Logic of Scientific Revolutions (2nd ed).

C'mon he is perfectly understandable. You are reading a schizophrenic word salad that makes a lot of sense. He sounds like David Foster Wallace when he rants, or Joyce (whose daughter was an institutionalized schizophrenic I wonder why), or Kerouac. It's just that they were far more practiced in writing that way.

I am not into arguing with you. Just go to the museum and read the letter (note maybe) signed by Wayne. Simple original evidence unless you can prove he didn't write it. The museum asserts its authenticity by placing it there. They could be wrong. I have no proof that they are wrong however.

saxon asks: "how would soldiers {cough, cough} in 1785 or that time frame {sneeze, sneeze} put infections on blankets {excuse me, I need to wipe off some of this pus} and then give them {ooops, I accidentally drooled a bit} to indians?

Good question!

You are correct. They are a bribe. But you are committing the fallacy of either/or. I will agree you are right and that it is a both/and of facts. There are probably more than two IMHO.

Requires an analysis of variance to see which ones are the most important, eh.

ASOKA:

Sounds good when writing it but does not work in pratcial application. In order for the white man to give infected blanket to the indians they, the white man have to be holding the blankets. It did not happen. The indians never claimed it happened. What the indians claimed is that they got sick from the white man, they did.

This blanket story is just that. It is a good story and lots of people want to believe it. It has a life of it's own. But that does not make it true.

i think every person should read this blog as it will prepaid everyone for might be coming our way !

Abbey:

I do not know what was written. He may have wanted it to happen, but, there is no evidence that it ever did happen.

One it is very difficult to do, two why bother?
The indians were dying in stunning numbers from interaction with white men.

Do you ever wonder why it was the indians that got sick from the white man and not the other way around?

We can be just as positive as we can be negative.

Anyone ever heard of Lee the Horselogger?

By happy accident we ran into him here in Spokane yesterday on our way out to our new farm. After some chatting he stated that he had no idea why everyone thinks that America is this rude, dark, back-stabbing hellhole. Quite the opposite, nearly everyone he met in his 3 years on the road in a covered wagon with 4 Suffolk Punch draft horses was delightful and generous.

Change is already under way, big time change. But there is no reason to keep promoting the dark when there is so much light to be had. The only thing I worry about at my new farm developed with the most up-to-date permacultural innovations for resilience and self-sufficiency, is that I won't get many half hour conversations in the front garden with complete strangers like I had this morning...

saxon said: "Entitlements are a government bribe to a portion of the population, resourses taken from another portion of the population."

Yes, the strategy is an old one. In fact, Mad Anthony used it effectively against the Indians.

The Greenville Treaty established a general peace between Americans and Indians in the Old Northwest that held until 1811. It inexpensively opened most of Ohio to rapid American settlement, and proved that Indian lands could be purchased, rather than merely taken.

The treaty also, through the annuity system, increased Indian dependence on manufactured goods.

American officials would later force these tribes into land cession treaties by threatening to withhold their Greenville annuities.

While it seemed Wayne had negotiated with the confederation, in reality he met with disgruntled, feuding villagers who could not even agree on the distribution of their annuities.

A great many of the chiefs who attended the treaty died soon after from disease, further compromising Indian leadership in the Old Northwest.

Wayne's use of bribery, spies, and threats of force helped him play one tribe against another to secure the treaty.

His aide-de-camp, William Henry Harrison, utilized all these tactics when he became governor of Indiana Territory in 1800.

You can read Wayne's personal writing in the Indianapolis museum, as abbeysbooks says.

ASOKA :

Yes sounds like what happened.

Well, I admit, the mention of self-delusion and the concept of reality has stepped up the conversation a bit. The entire discourse still seems a little Dickian in nature. "Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away" -Philip K. Dick. Although 'Confessions of a Crap Artist' does draw some similar paralells to our current situation. This isn't the first time ideas such as these have surfaced by any means.

People have an uncanny knack for looking from a distance. Look closely enough and nothing is as solid as it seems. All things, material objects, people and Governments arise, dwell in a state of constant change and then pass. Can we stop our desire for that piece of cake, that sexy sports car, the attractive mate or lover? Many have the stomach of an elephant with the mouth of an ant: never satisfied. The situations change, but the problems remain the same. Why is the truth always in the last place you look?

When you live in a rural area and say do some substitute teaching, you get a lot of sick stuff coming your way and you succumb as you have lost the immunity of living in a crowded place.

Kids going back to school in the fall get sick.

Well I guess if you don't get infections from blankets, as you say, then hospitals don't need to change to clean sheets between every patient.

Stupid.

On BHL and Foucault:

The oddity in Levy's argument is that in its well justified focus on radical Islam, he acknowledges, only in passing, the impact of the conspiratorially anti-modern turn of what might be called the Foucauldian left which took hold in the aftermath of the 1960s. He discusses Foucault in the context of French intra-left debates, but never as a precursor to 'the backward falling corpse.' For Foucault, disillusion with the USSR, as with Virginia Woolf who finally discovered that Hitler wasn't a nice guy, meant that it was their own liberal societies which were truly fascist. Woolf, and more systematically Foucault, sniffed out fascism everywhere in their own relatively tolerant societies. Foucault was the master of discovering 'little everyday fascism.' Similarly the leftist philosopher Louis Althusser, who had experienced what he saw as freedom in a German POW camp during WWII was dedicated to exposing 'that most frightful, appalling and horrifying of all the ideological state apparatuses . . . namely, the family.' For this cynical left, which barely makes an appearance in The Left in Dark Times, the achievements of liberal societies have only made matters worse. In the words of Jacques Derrida, one of the deconstructionist champions of the cynical left, 'no amount of progress warrants us to ignore the fact that never, in absolute terms, never have so many men, women and children been enslaved, famished or exterminated on earth.' No evidence is necessary since, as with the communists and fascists of old, liberalism is clearly the primary source of evil in the world.

I'll post the entire link in another comment.

Hindoos are an amazingly droll unoriginal people for the most part. But good imitators-they have learned much from us. Their hands are small which may be good for surgery. The Arab hand is about half way between the powerful Anglo Saxon hand and the Hindoo hand. The Celtic hand smaller than the Anglo but larger than the Arab.

There wasn't that many of them-they were hunter gatherers and that takes alot of room. Not even Whites can kill people who aren't there. Let's have equal time for the Blacks: much of Africa was once peopled by Bushmen type people. The Blacks killed them or drove them into the wastelands. It was genocide. The same with the Pygmies who once were more widespread. They are considered as game animals now by the guerillas in thje Ituri Forest.

Hello. I'm new to this site. I'm looking for someone with too much time on their hands, a keyboard, and a cool handle.........that I can pick a fight with. Any subject will do, the further off-topic, the better. If Kunstler is writing about peak oil or Goldman Sachs, then you and I can get into a snit about...um..civil war re-enactments or key lime pie recipes. I'm hoping to become one of the regulars on here. Soon, one of you veterans will reply, "Oh, Trotsky Catbox, you are such a nincompoop!" or "I see the logic of your argument, Trotsky Catbox." Ah, Nirvana! I love the Comments section. I mean, Kunstler pays for this forum, but you regulars totally rawk!

C'mon, let's rumble!

No, evil Families are evil. The Family per se is necessary-even if a necessary evil. All cultures have some form of it-I agree that our form put too much pressure on women who were isolated from other women-especially their mothers who could have helped alot. Extended family is the natural family-which leads to clans, which leads to tribes, which leads to Nations. We've lost every level and are going to have to start from the bottom.

God bless you Abbey, you're an unusual person-don't try to make yourself the norm. Unusual people always hate the "norms" and try to make themselves the norm. In your case, you fall into a kind of utopianism. Far more dangerous is gay political machine. Is anyone so naive to believe that if it gets what it wants-marriage and don't ask/don't tell-that it wont keep going? I've already heard gays dreaming of affirmative action. And they already have rights we don't have with the hate crime legislation. It's just not human nature to dissolve a winning formula-they'll keep going trying to put themselves out as the new model of what's good.

from CBS News 'cyber wars':

President Obama didn't say which country had been plunged into darkness, but a half a dozen sources in the military, intelligence, and private security communities have told us the president was referring to Brazil.

Several prominent intelligence sources confirmed that there were a series of cyber attacks in Brazil: one north of Rio de Janeiro in January 2005 that affected three cities and tens of thousands of people, and another, much larger event beginning on Sept. 26, 2007.

That one in the state of Espirito Santo affected more than three million people in dozens of cities over a two-day period, causing major disruptions. In Vitoria, the world's largest iron ore producer had seven plants knocked offline, costing the company $7 million. It is not clear who did it or what the motive was.

But the people who do these sorts of things are no longer teenagers making mischief. They're now likely to be highly trained soldiers with the Chinese army or part of an organized crime group in Russia, Europe or the Americas.

"They can disrupt critical infrastructure, wipe databases. We know they can rob banks. So, it's a much bigger and more serious threat," explained Jim Lewis, director of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Lewis led a group that prepared a major report on cyber security for President Obama.

"What was it that made the government begin to take this seriously?" Kroft asked.

"In 2007 we probably had our electronic Pearl Harbor. It was an espionage Pearl Harbor," Lewis said. "Some unknown foreign power, and honestly, we don't know who it is, broke into the Department of Defense, to the Department of State, the Department of Commerce, probably the Department of Energy, probably NASA. They broke into all of the high tech agencies, all of the military agencies, and downloaded terabytes of information."

How much is a terabyte?

"The Library of Congress, which has millions of volumes, is about 12 terabytes. So, we probably lost the equivalent of a Library of Congress worth of government information in 2007," Lewis explained.

"All stolen by foreign countries?" Kroft asked.

Cyber War: Sabotaging the System
60 Minutes: Former Chief of National Intelligence Says U.S. Unprepared for Cyber
Could hackers get into the computer systems that run crucial elements of the world's infrastructure, such as the power grids, water works or even a nation's military arsenal? Steve Kroft reports.
• Video Web Extra: Hacking the ATMs
Former State Department official Jim Lewis with extreme--and illegal--examples of getting money from an ATM.
• Video Web Extra: Hacking the D.O.D.
Jim Lewis is a former State Department official who directed a major study on cyber security for President Obama.

(CBS)
(CBS) But since then, there has been an even more serious breach of computer security, which Lewis called the most significant incident ever publically acknowledged by the Pentagon.

Last November, someone was able to get past the firewalls and encryption devices of one of the most sensitive U.S. military computer systems and stay inside for several days.

"This was the CENTCOM network," Lewis explained. "The command that's fighting our two wars. And some foreign power was able to get into their networks. And sit there and see everything they did. That was a major problem. And that's really had a big effect on D.O.D."

The Government spends billions on "emergency preparedness", but is not and never will be prepared for any sort of disaster.

When Hurrican Rita endangered Houston in 2005, Houston had NO effective plan for evacuating their city. Despite being in lowland and despite spending millions on "preparedness", there was no plan to make their only northbound freeway "one-way". And no one had ever thought of what to do with the hundreds of cars that would run out of gasoline when millions of cars are stuck in a "parking-lot freeway" all heading northbound.

And although the major hurricane danger in Houston is flooding of the low-laying areas, there'd apparently never been a plan for just evacuating the endangered lowest areas. Instead, the ENTIRE city was evacuated, resulting in the unnecessary deaths of over 100 people. The hurricane killed seven people. Our Government "emergency preparedness" officials killed 113.

Our Goverment(s) continue to promise us that "we learned a lot this time, and it'll never happen again".
On 9/11/2001, although we had military jets in the air, there was no mechanism for issuing orders to use them to shoot down a wayward plane. This, despite there'd been MOVIES made about folks using jetliners to destroy large buildings. Last week, when two Northwest Airlines pilots were effectly "asleep", our "emergency preparedness" officials failed to the Air Force for 1.5 hours after the plane "went missing"

This is an interesting comment from Desertrat: To digress momentarily from the central thesis of the essay: Ann Coulter offered the comment, "...what is the threat posed by the religious right, precisely? Is the nation in danger of having its coarseness removed? When anal sex, oral sex and premarital sex are all gleefully laughed about on prime-time TV, the perill of religious values infecting the culture would seem to be somewhat overrated."

It sure seems like Ann Coulter's religious right friends and the PC crowd they seem to hate would be allies. I guess it boils down to who gets to tell whom what is abrasive, or coarse, and who gets to say what we do about it. I prefer neither.

Hi Jaego,

I really need a friend. I'm going to die without it. You are the only sane one here. Let's commiserate with each other over the appalling degradation happening in the country of our birth, a failure of morality and thus of complete fools, not just fools. I was going to say 'fowl' for fool, but I don't know if anyone would get it.

There's a guy who believes the Earth is 4,000 years old, and he says he skips over the anti-semitic comments. He must have been talking about me, slandering me, labelling me. I was telling lit-tle-ti-ny things that really happened, not comparing Jews to rodents. This small man from Isreal said he was here because Isreal is about to be bombed by Iran. No, no! We won that war for you. What about us? Now we're not appreciated, now you want to desert Isreal? You're a rat deserting a sinking ship, then. I am called upon to say you're smart? No! This isn't 1938. he asks why 90% of his family was killed. I tell him if he can get my family killed to please do it. I can't stand 'em. They're fucking hook-nose Jews!

Nah, man. Just getting arrested on a 5150 necessitates that you be put in restraints for a period of a few hours, then let out. No exceptions. But, it is the confinement I object to. It lasts a few days, and once they have you, who knows. You're paperwork may get lost. This is without charges, but, I understand that offing a police officer causes you to be mistreated in custody. I just wonder if they beat you constantly, do you develop a thick skin? Doesn't it hardly matter what they do after awhile? I'll save my teeth, but they can only knock them out once. It'll be a lot easier after that.

only sane one here

BULLSHIT

You have to name two of them, then they are reciprocals, used for numbers; x and 1/x are reciprocals, but they can need to be reduced and then you won't be able to tell they are reciprocals unless I say so. x and 5/5x are reciprocals. The exponent (-1) tells you to take the reciprocal.

Then they drank alcohol and put it in political science. They were looped and thought they were onto something.

The relationship may be important; that is called reciprocal.

Reciprocity is the condition existing between them. Does everything have a reciprocal? No, zero doesn't. Does one (or'unity'). Yes. Does one have a unique reciprocal? Hmm, I can't answer that. It sure would be easier to eat tacos than find a Jack-in-the-Box, but, to look up what you want to say in a math "dictionary", nah. We don't hand that out. You don't get to stick to numbers. We'll make 'em into sets. Better stick to English dictionaries. It's easier to prove I'm stupid. Look it up and put your finger on it and turn the book. "See? Right here in black-and-white." Then that is the authority. Thanks for defending me to that one to whom I read a snatch of "Bungalow Bill". Saxon, your kind can celebrate. You all got mean old John Lennon for all his songs. You won.

Asburybooks, what's the difference between shitty and dirty?

Why you geting mad? You might be something on the street with a gun, pulling drive-bys, but all us in here don't get mad and we killed people with our bare hands. Where you gonna run, you little gangster? You got life to serve. You better develop some manners you address me.

"How precious. Asia's geting testy."

What is the fornicating savage human race going to do when the oil runs out?
No tailgate parties, no more bowl games, no more whiter than white laundry, no more new and improved whiz bang nick nack gadgets, no more Ecoli burgers with a side order of lies, no more grease to keep the wheels of industry turning, no more toilet paper or flushing toilets, and no more pampers. "OH, the horror." You'll all be knee deep in it.
I'm not looking forward to counting the locusts when they come to visit the big pile of rotting garbage.

P.S. Warning: Reading the Quran may be dangerous to your mental health.

The Old Testament's full of Jews, right? So, do I need to read it (seeing what this excrescence's name is)?

It's hugho. That's hard to remember. It should have been Hugh-o. It was hard to find so I have a snippet from it to prove he is pumping up JHK:

You're just sympathizing. I also hit on "trotsky catbox', deal with him after.

I'm going by A. SEB, now. I like "Asa", from the OT, and many more since they are great. But this guy, who is Christian, and, I suppose Protestant, because of the deliberate anti-intellectual strategy of the born-agains, the creationists, as opposed to the anti-abortionists, who may be Catholic, he obviously does not read Kunstler in the spirit in which he writes, which takes Disney and hence Protestantism to task so severely it ought to be enshrined. Our waiting on hold was figured out at disney. Our bedtime prayer, too, "Now I lay me down to sleep." Our country has scientifically robbed us of the joy of being alive through the efforts of Mr. Disney and his cigarette-fuelled intrusion into every facet of our life, making it a living hell. You can't be Christian and support Kunstler, because he has had as much a fill of that as he has suburbia. Who do you suppose he blames for suburbia?

And why shouldn't he, or any Jew? you didn't defeat Rome, it was already dying, and you filled the niche. Not with anything original, just with a rehashed Jewish religion. They held their own with the Greeks, the Egyptians, etc. They were great. You're an afterthought. Ingrates!

And, take two: This guy catbox. A steer could distort a fence better than you on this comment section. The whole Internet is infested with idiotic comments all marching to a certain idiotic drummer. We are watching the details of how a population is weakened by mind control as it happens here, just like in the dysprosia novels.

Kunstler pays for this comment section? He doesn't pay by the word. If you read about blogs, I think it will tell you to read the comments; they'll help you write a better blog. Thank God Kunstler comes with all the bells and whistles, a reasonable man. And reason is in the middle between extremes, not everything to one side or the other of your position. We give Kunstler his damn due.

I'm Aseb, like Ahab the pirate. You didn't know he was a pirate. It's not in Moby Dick, it's in the sequel. The white whale comes back up and Ahab gets unwound and swims to a desert island. Then he gets another ship. Johnny Depp'll be in it. He has to go one rung down on the social ladder of ship guys, to pirate.

I've lost track. Is Kunstler actually writing new articles each Monday, or simply randomly re-arranging selected paragraphs from various articles he's written over the last 10 months?

They've become largely indistinguishable screeds with nothing really new to say. Not that I blame Kunstler ... if I committed myself to writing a new article every week on the same theme, I'd start to just repeat myself, too.

Meanwhile, the Dow keeps climbing to new 2009 highs. For whatever reason, people investing real money aren't quite ready to flee for the exits, yet. Maybe the end of the world will be delayed for yet another year or ten.

Has anyone noticed that store shelves are understocked? Only a year ago, Walmart's aisles were crowded with center displays, overflowing with cheap crap. They're gone.

All three supermarkets that I patronize (2 discounts stores, 1 upscale) have also removed their center aisle displays. They also understock the shelves;they only put a few products at the front and there is a big gap behind. And there's a quite a bit of empty space on all days of the week, all times of day at all 3 stores.

The drugstores - Walgreens and CVS both - are doing the same thing. And their "departments" are shrinking too. They all carry fewer brands in each category. The lucrative supplement aisle is half the size it once was (at all above stores).

And don't get me started about Macy's. That store looks like it was robbed. Entire departments have their paltry merchandise spread across several feet of display space.

And jewelry and shoe stores. The displays are practically empty compared to the flush times of the CLinton/Bush years.

...and I'd like to note that this is peak retail season. In years past, stores would be overflowing with crap from Halloween until New Years Eve. Not this year.

IKEA-a significant number of items on the floor had out-of-stock signs. Again, this is peak buying season.

On the other end of the scale, my sister in law runs a thrift store where people can buy clothes and toys for a dollar. Sales are way down compared to last year.

Should I be scared or gratified?

Cheap energy and computers allowed for massive economies of scale. What did we do with the economies of scale? Big box stores (that's Paul Krugman's thesis) and just-in-time inventories.

Expensive energy is going to blow-up the economic machinery that has been responsible for the majority of our gains in standard of living since about 1980. Jim has opined on this in the past, and I think he's right.

One area where I disagree somewhat with Jim is on the role of technology. I agree that we aren't going to magically sustain the unsustainable with technology (short of some unforeseen surprise). But technology broadly defined, to the extent that human ingenuity manifests itself as technology, can and will help us adapt.

bproman said: "P.S. Warning: Reading the Quran may be dangerous to your mental health."

Yes, and the same should be said of the Holy Bible. The Bible is full of cruelty and violence and is especially not suitable for children.

http://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/cruelty/long.html

I've come to the conclusion, too, that our way of life is going to change dramatically. What I do not buy is all the speculation about how we're going to have to downsize and live in small towns, barter or trade with gold and ride around in trains blah blah fantasy blah. History, though, shows us that that will not happen.

Here is the reality:
During the Cold War, the US and USSR had opposing strategies for destroying one another. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, those plans were made public (I was an officer in the army at that time). The USA planned to destroy the USSR by incinerating every metropolis, city, town and outhouse in the USSR. We were going to nuke everything and try to kill as many people as possible - that was our plan.

The Soviets knew this and had an even better plan. They came to the conclusion that they could 100% destroy the USA with about 12 nukes (more or less). They were going to nuke our major refineries and our biggest ports. This, they concluded, would bring on a biblical famine and send hundreds of millions of us into country (good luck if that is your plan)in search of food and water. Naturally, we would destroy each other in the process. Their best military minds believed that our energy dependent society would quickly shrink by a good 90% once the power went off.

Now, we know how quickly things fell apart in New Orleans. How do you think that place and the surrounding suburban area would have looked like after, say, three months without electricity, fuel and water? Anybody want to take a guess at that? Multiply that nation wide and that is the calamity that we face and we've taken the few resources that we have left (time, energy and money) and we've handed them all to the upper 1% so they can live it up a little while longer.

This rollercoaster is headed down so you might as well lift up your arms and scream. Enjoy the ride.

I keep saying this and saying this and still no one gets it.

The Dow is not going up. The dollar is going down. Same with food and all the other things you buy. They are not going up. The dollar is going down.

Oil goes up because the sellers are not stupid. They know the dollar is going down so they increase the price of their oil. Why shouldn't they?

I've noticed the store shelves at Wal Mart here in Springfield MO. The parking lot is now sparse and I can always find a spot up close. So I agree.

I think the sales will be once again online sales. Retail stores do not know that their competition is the internet. I even showed the t-shirt business next to me what's going on online with her business and offered to help her. She just shrugged as if it would go away.

It has been clear for a long while that our government is basically stupid. congress is incompetent and our presidents have been mentally challenged in one way or another.

But the guys in the USSR were shrewd devils. and they are commodity trading experts as are the Chinese.

Our govt is hopeless. Even as intelligent as Obama is, he has no street smarts.

Abbeysbooks said: "Even as intelligent as Obama is, he has no street smarts."

Obama was not chosen by the Illuminati. He was not born to the elite rich class.

He walked the streets of Chicago as a community organizer. If you have ever been to the area of Cabrini Green (which I somehow doubt), you would know you need street smarts to survive. I have called police from there and they refused to enter the area. That is the community where Obama walked.

It is a stupid statement to say Obama has no street smarts.

Obama had enough street smarts to kick McCain and Palin's ass. They were in a street fight with a Chicago community organizer and only brought a knife.

And no other president in the last hundred years has gotten as far as Obama in health/insurance reform, so it appears he has the experience needed to bring about changes no other president has been able to effect.

And you ain't seen nothing yet... he is just getting warmed up. The coal industry millionaires are terrified because Obama is kicking their asses, too. Obama will effect changes in energy and alternative power sources and climate change legislation that no other president has been able to do.

A classic JHK slam!

Deliciously trenchant and poetically musical.

The only nit I would pick is his continued reluctance to strip the emperor bare.

So I'll add some frosting from Ted Rall:

"From healthcare to torture to the economy to war, Obama has reneged on pledges real and implied. So timid and so owned is he that he trembles in fear of offending, of all things, the government of Turkey. Obama has officially reneged on his campaign promise to acknowledge the Armenian genocide. When a president doesn't have the 'nads to annoy the Turks, why does he bother to show up for work in the morning?

"Obama is useless. Worse than that, he's dangerous. Which is why, if he has any patriotism left after the thousands of meetings he has sat through with corporate contributors, blood-sucking lobbyists and corrupt politicians, he ought to step down now--before he drags us further into the abyss.
[...]
"Obama is cute. He is charming. But there is something rotten inside him. Unlike the Republicans who backed Bush, I won't follow a terrible leader just because I voted for him. Obama has revealed himself. He is a monster, and he should remove himself from power."
- MR. OBAMA: RESIGN NOW

Mmm, Mmm, Mmm...that's good frosting!

I know-it's gets me too. They plant trees for the "righteous gentiles" who risked their lives to save Jews. But what about Jews doing anything for us? And we can be righteous all by ourselves-we don't need to serve them so that we can be called good. Eli Wiesel asked, "What did Poland ever do for the Jews"? Kosinski (the writer) replied, "What did the Jews ever do for Poland"?

Osee is an interesting Bibical name that never made the big time. Then there are the three men in the furnace: Shadrach, Mishak, and Abdenego-all great names. Israel is a fine name if one can forget the politics: it means spirit wrestler.

Yes Aseb suits you. You are fighting the White Whale and I the Black. Yang and Yin. I once say a crow and sea gull have a dog fight-fighting in a spiral descent and shearing off just before they hit the ground. Our Whales are safely under water so no worries. In my movie, Johnny would just stay on island and look for a girl. Anyway, sharpen your harpoon-we have work to do. I'm also gonna get a Trident so I can be like Posiedon and the Peasants.

Well said and nicely done. I am not sure whether to be relieved at the apparent catharsis from so many commentators to your weekly column or appalled at the rudeness and inconsideration displayed.

For a brief instant I imagined that maybe JHK was actually writing all the stuff I read in the comments section which would either make you the most brilliant or the most multiply personalitied person in the world.

Hey fucklips
Get a tin foil hat and expound on your favorite paranoid conspiracy theory or STFU. If you can't handle that at least start ranting about some 18th century author that no one cares about. OK?

Hi Jim,

Thought you may be interested to see (if you haven't already) an article in today's UK Guardian on an IEA Peak Oil Whistle Blower. I know the news itself is not a suprsise but the fact that we are hearing it is.

MESSAGE TO MILITARY HAWKS AND CONSERVATIVES:

"It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change."

--Charles Darwin

I see that Mr. Kunstler is here, but, believe me, the whole meatgrinder thing of being accused, say, of anti-semitism, well, I just want to say that it grinds up a quota of people every day. And, I don't want to be ground up.

Welcome to your own blog.

Oh, I should introduce myself. I posted my URL, but I didn't say it was "How to Make Methamphetamine". For anyone who claims to write, "caustic commentary", check it out: You are playing whiffle ball.

I have something loaded, because I was already logging on (a tragic waste of time)after sleeping; it is 8:05 a.m. Tuesday San Diego time (The movie playing is an elephant with Bill Murray, at the place in the tape where the radio says "7:48 San Diego time" (I said it first)). I was noticing the head size between human and elephant. No one is quite sure how an elephant can have more brains and be a wild animal, are they? Matthew Mcgonahey (sp?)---Hi, Jaego. I can't incorporate my own myths. Things happen, I write them down. If they didn't prove my point, why'd they happen?

Umm, here's what JHK really said:

pretense and lying.

Here's what LATOC said it said, and it is stronger.- - - (Oh, man. Please find a stronger version of what I say; I guarantee it'll be a crime to say it):

LATOC: "Obama is flat out lying about U.S. unemployment numbers"

You didn't say that.

It is sometimes hard to select-copy-paste a link. Instead of copying, it takes you to the page. But, here, I was able to copy it in the headline.

See? I am capable of referring to the actual words. Okay, Qshtick?

Never mind what to do about this. It is not germane. The scope of my comment today covers the intentional evil of men, in the guise of raising the alarm. We'll call it sensationalism. Now, ordinarily, I gravitate towards sensational images. If I have seen the opening to a Bond film fifteen times, I have eventually realized, hey. He just shot me. That's me bleeding. I like that.

Do I post a still from an elephant trampling a man, the whole clip, Edison's "Electrocution of an Elephant"? No. I try to post something that will hit the nail on the head: an elephant or a whale enjoys a far more high-fideity picture of the world. I have even more contempt for you. If you can read this, you are like about 20th in skull capacity, maximum. I don't care how it happened. You're success is an atrocity costing every other sentient being on this planet dearly. Are you going to blame me just because I want to see the color of your insides?

The movie ended at 8:12. The peppermint lollipop is not stuck to anything. I'm not a bear with honey. I'm fastidious. Matthew (mentioned previously, o shallow of brainpan), plays a speed freak trucker; how original. Here's my song quote:

Nobody gonna take my head
I got speed inside my brain
Nobody gonna steal my head
Now that I'm on the road again
Oooh I'm in heaven again I've got everything
Like a moving ground an open road
And everything

I love it and I need it
I seed it
Eight cylinders all mine
Alright hold on tight
I'm a highway star

Nobody gonna take my car
I'm gonna race it to the ground
Nobody gonna beat my car
It's gonna break the speed of sound
Oooh it's a killing machine
It's got everything

Oh, God. That was hard; they kill you. The other one misquoted. This is not about a car. The other one said, "I got a speed inside my brain." Then it said, I love it, I need it, ...well, it didn't say, "I seed it", and yes, if you take speed you will say it that way. I'd say scene as a verb; I'd say screed as a stop-motion tableaux. The album is called, "Machine Head (1972). Ritchie Blackmoor is somebody in that. I'd like to know who wrote "Highway Star". I'd like to know who wrote the lies for Obama to tell so we don't all die right now, and shake his hand. I'd like to know who wrote what they say Jim Kunstler wrote (probably some well-respected man about town doing the best thing so concerned).

When will I run out of quotes? Ha ha ha ha never. And, methamphetamine will not run out of planets until the universe runs out of stars. Settle in.

Aw, you did it in gun, not in dog.

(I put, "Here's my song quote". Then, I was going to put "Here's my blog", so cherried out. I fucked it up?)

A blue spot right here, please.

I need to edit my comment right here.

Oh, what a drag:

http://sbillinghust.wordpress.com

I get to do that once a day, right? I didn't write a post. I have been here. I can only be in one place at a time, and I'm not a mind reader, eether.

Things don't have to happen for a reasons that make me look like an idiot, I say.

Edit the fuck out of this one, Steve. You may now edit. Edit all you want to.

Okay, let me scan for capitals. Okay, go back where you were. LSD in nineteen sixty-six, eh?

Not necessarily. Don't forget Hunter Thompson's words:

“America... just a nation of two hundred million used car salesmen with all the money we need to buy guns and no qualms about killing anybody else in the world who tries to make us uncomfortable.”

Now, that sounds like a two-edged sword to me. That "....anywhere else in the world..", doesn't have to refer to other sovereign nations.

I don't think a Pinochet regime could survive in the US, even with the backing of the CIA and your military-industrial complex, if things turn ugly, food and shelter-wise.

A welcome oasis of encouraging info.

You crack baby. If you are from UK, check this out: Our CIA is incompetent, but it is the KGB that is competent. They use, ...

"Surely not to live in pain and fear (why we're here)"

It isn't MI5 that's competent, if that's the word I want. It isn't getting ugly me writing about it.

Let me help you:

complex, when things turn ugly, food

Ooh, I feel bad. I did a thing I saw Craig T. Nelson do in Silkwood, and if you aren't 50, skip over what you don't understand and close your comprehension without prejudice.

Now, you, ...do you mind if I punctuate by calling you names?

Okay, well, "when" is more scarier. you need to say, "if" so I can come swooping in and say, "when, Kimo Sabe. When".

But, there's the rub. When's when? I don't even want to be all dressed up with no place to go, not figuratively, literally. Happens every Friday night. As miserable as I am, I'm at least not stood up.

"The reality is the Hitler was a leftist, he was not on the right politicaly."

Do you accept everything governments say at face value? I suppose you think the Democratic Republic of North Korea is indeed Democratic.

Be on the right if you must. If it makes you feel better about yourself- congrats! Give yourself a pat on the back for being "Right." You are correct that leftwing dictatorships have caused a lot (and arguably) more killing in history. But you are 100% incorrect in your conception of what constitutes being on the "right" and the "left."

You don't need to fabricate beliefs like this. You are only confusing people more.

You weave a hilariously ironical tapestry with your "take" on "reality" and "history", and the supremely autocratic attitude they share, JHK.

Thank you. Are you ready to do the right things and start capitalizing Whites? Or are you still holding out that Whites have no real culture of their own and don't deserve it?

Dreams die hard, but some still harbor the dream of financial security.

Senate Banking Committee Chair Christopher Dodd wants people to not be ripped off by the banks.

Dodd has made a proposal to protect the taxpayers that is expected to gain broad support among Democrats, but Republicans haven't signed on.

Among the top points of contention is Dodd's desire to create a new agency to protect consumers taking out home loans or using credit cards against predatory lending and surprise interest rate hikes.

I don't get it. What is the Republican dream that won't die? Free market capitalism? Smaller government? Lower taxes?

Why wouldn't the Republicans want to protect ordinary people from getting ripped off? (people who also vote) Do they really want Obama in office for 12 years?

The word is 'conservative', but I got it wrong as 'concerned'. My father would confront me after he had had me locked up (Mother: "He's out of his mind!", with a triumphant and demented grunt, "ull-hyuh! Unnnng, ...", which Jim Morrison does to grand effect in Back Door Man. He sounds depraved, but don't think that my mother ever would have turned aside at the cachet of wealth. Women are venal and (Kunstler may I?) mendacious. Craven. Reptiles, gutter-crawling. Allah like! They suit up in the military with a chain of command, some people lower, some higher. Gee, where does psychiatrist go? Major, like Major Burns? They promoted the Fort Hood shooter, recently. So much for psychiatric treatment's real objectives coming out of the woodwork. I've always known it.

What they fucking are? Well, in coursework like sociology, anthropology, political science, you teachers better give us whatever you want us to learn on the first day. We have chicks to bird-dog and beaver to bang. I hearsay conservative means to restrict rights to people who already have them, and liberals wish to extend rights to people who don't have them now. If you examine Obabma's every move, you'll see that's correct. Obama, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, LBJ, Kennedy, Eisenhower, Truman. I'm trump-tight.

Yeah, so, much like Zorro (and much like Batman:
JOKER Know where I got these scars?
BATMAN No, but I know where you got these. Fuck you---boom!), my father would say your mother and I are
CONCerned cf
CONServative

(and it isn't a true "C", C like in Conk, short form of a curl-relaxer). "Uh, dad, my DNA profile came back and I'm half negroid, no Jew in me at-tall."

"There's an Ethiopian in the fuel supply."

"Uh-huh. 'Fraid so."

That (they kill you)'s even better than saying fuck you.

"Concerned" is homosexual code, put out by conservatives. It carries their brand. If your eye offends thee, pluck it out. I want to strike fear in the heart of my enemies. How do I do it? I put out so much methamphetamine that fear and paranoia are gaining ground like the stock market.

Mait a minute. Mine enemies. Let's deconstruct Kunstler for a moment. din't he---yes! He wrote, no. First, Hitler wrote, Mein Kampf (he was beset by fleas. His ears were just nubs like a mangy Doberman). Then, Kunstler comes back with "What I live for". That isn't the same? Okay, okay. "Dreams Die Hard" isn't the same as "DIEHARD (batteries)". Oh, it most certainly is. You don't count spaces. You all talk about reality and you don't even know it concrete, much less abstract; I'm just saying. I just say conkreek because I'm an actor and an actor runs drama by you and I give a pretty good lecture. You have to project. From the diaphragm. Let's breathe. Okay, shake it out. At ease. Where do you want it. Punishment time.

I stopped thinking the unthinkable. I was a-thinkin', a-humpin', a-cryin', and missing you. That sentence about Obama the avatar of hopefulness, I-I---don't have a great familiarity of that word. I need my avatar to be of hopelessness. I didn't vote. It only encourages them. Kunstler "pulled the lever", come on. If you can do coke you can say "vote", though I will admit you can't say "coke" if you are shopping for coke.

"What do you want, boy?"
"he shit his pants and he's not in a hurry to go anywhere."
"Oh, that means he wants this coke. Sixty dollars the half, kid. How many copies?"

Home recovering from H1N1. My country of 30 million has 50 million doses of vaccine and I get the flu, go figure. The only good thing about it is the time available for reading blogs. Anyway, as 1/2 my family is American I have followed with great interest and anguish the collapse of the familiar.

As Abbey said....the dollar is what is falling, and that makes other situations appear to rise, currency, stocks, commodities, whatever. I think that is the jist of it. Which leads me to the health care bill, and the question of affordability.

Canadians are very proud of their health care. Yes, it may take a few months to get hip replacement or an MRI, but serious illness gets addressed right away. My employer pays the 96.00 a month that a family pays in BC. My sister, who lives just a few hundred miles away in Seattle, pays 400.00 a month, and her employer pays an extra 800.00 on top of that! As far as I can tell her family is no healthier than mine. Unless the mindset of Americans change about taxation, you will never be able to afford a universal system. We pay about double for booze and the money goes into revenue for health. Cigarettes cost more. While we are the largest supplier of energy to the US our gas is much higher than yours....go figure. Federal and provincial taxation goes into revenue and is equalized around the country in transfer payments. It works. The Provinces then administer their own health care programs as they see fit, provided it conforms with the Canada Health Care Act, meaning, no 'for profit facilities' receive any taxpayer funding, whatsoever.

It is unbelievable that the US health care bill is touted as a money saver while allowing private insurers to remain. It can never work. In a universal system the only way to reign in costs is to ration services with waiting lists and tax the hell out of sin consumption. You cannot allow private suppliers to remain....skimming the healthy...and also allowing line budging that services the wealthy. Is the US prepared for that? For health service, a rich Canadian waits the same amount of time and goes to the same facility as an out of work logger. We love it.

Our system was set up in 1947. In 1957 it became Canadian wide. Business, doctors, and insurance companies fought it...and lost. It evolved when the costs were modest and the system simple. In today's complex web of systems and special interest groups, plus the defunct political process that doesn't really represent people anymore, I don't see how it can be done. Plus...the cost.

When I read JHK Long Emergency I found ideas that paralleled what I had believed was happening....would happen. His book gave my vague worries, substance. I think that the out of control debt is going to tip the load into TLE, if it isn't already here. Health care reform, two wars, bailouts, foreclosures, personal debt, the declining dollar, rising unemployment, rising stocks, well, it is beyond belief.

Do you accept everything governments say at face value? I suppose you think the Democratic Republic of North Korea is indeed Democratic.

Thank you, I hadn't quite thought of a worthwhile reply to his teabagger idiocy, but you summed it up nicely.

Nutty:

"WE are Socialists, we are enemies of the capitalistic economic system for the explotation of the economicy weak, with it;s unfair salaries, with it's unseemly evaluation of a human being according to wealth and property instead of responsibility and performance and we are all determined to destroy this system under all conditions"
Adolph Hitler May 1 1927

Hitler was a Follower of Marx,Gaulton and Madison Conrad, all leftist and believers in Eugenics.
At the same time Hitler was taking power in German, American Margret Sanger, member of the communist party was setting up Planned Parenthood. With its target of American Blacks.
Sanger, the communist worked with Nazi DR Ernst
Rudin on the Ppopulation and Racial policy commitee.
Hitler was a leftist

"Remember that Hitler was not elected due to the happiness and contentment of the German people. Here we go again."

Obama was a scripted reaction, as well as the reaction to someone pointing it out.

Are you ready to do the right things and start capitalizing Whites? Or are you still holding out that Whites have no real culture of their own and don't deserve it?
====================================
What a knucklehead, I mean...."capitalize whites" who the fuck cares?

"Our guilt is far, far less than anything that would require our self immolation."

I am reminded of an example of false guilt:

When in the presence of an unhappy woman, most american men assume it is because of them.

Druid:

I do not think that is your quote, but Hitler was never elected to a public office. The German people actually did not elect him as Chancellor.
He was appointed

Jaego said: "Or are you still holding out that Whites have no real culture of their own and don't deserve it?"

We definitely need to stamp out the white values that have gotten us into the mess we are in.

The value independence has to go. We are interdependent now. Radiation clouds, environmental contamination, etc. do not recognize national boundaries.

The white christian belief in mastery over nature has got to go. We are part of the web of life, not almighty stewards with dominion over everything, like the Bible would have us believe.

The white valuing of individual goals over group goals has got to go. We need mutual cooperation more than competition if we are to survive.

The white valuing of achievement has led to power and the accumulation of assets and wealth (which they think gives them status or is proof they are blessed by a god) to a privileged few.

Basically the white "dominant culture," which is soon to lose its "majority" status, needs to be downgraded. We need to take whites down a notch. Take away their privilege and their supposed white superiority. Spread the power, spread the wealth within the society. This is happening slowly.

We need to go beyond the traditional white conception of the nuclear family, and beyond the idea that marriage is between a man and a woman.

No more traditional white culture belief that the father or husband is the customary authority figure who has traditionally worked outside the home to support his wife and family.

No more mother or wife remaining at home to care for the children. We need more single and blended family environments. We need legal gay marriage nationally.

I could go on, but you get the idea of how white culture has been repressive and harmful and should get out of the way, because it is a new day in America.

"...I have been astounded at how the American people trust their Govt.,"

More of that "eights year old's faith", which just illustrates that it is the object of the faith {ie: who it is that is being trusted} that is the problem.

messianicdruid said: "it is the object of the faith {ie: who it is that is being trusted} that is the problem."

I trusted God to make my mortgage payment and that sumbitch must have died.... or sorry face must be hiding. And with good reason... I'd whup god's ass for being untrustworthy.

The government NEVER fails to send millions of people their social security check on time. The government can be trusted. Of the people, by the people and for the people. Yes sireee.

I will trust the government... no more invisible beings for me.

asoka-his-pants sez:

"The nuclear family is the primary means of maintaining a sick society by indoctrinating children with its values."

What a fucking MORON. We find ourselves in the straights we are currently in not because of the nuclear family but because of the decline of the nuclear family. When over 50% of children are born out of wedlock the decline and rot are well underway.

ZZZZZ:

The destruction of the nuclear family is a corner stone of Communism. Then replaced by the state. That maybe what ASOKA is refering to.
It does not seem to be a workable strategy. At least in the U.S. Areas that have a high % of sigle parent familys are not as productive as areas that have two parent families.
It does not take a village it takes two parents.

Hitler was a leftist

....and Stalin was a philanthropist......
drink from upside down glasses..... the ground is blue the sky is brown.... Bush wanted a "more humble" foreign policy.

Only someone with absolutely no knowledge of history could be duped into believing you could believe anything Hitler said.

Dale:

I give you evidence you give me your opinion and insults.

You are not convincing

"I trusted God to make my mortgage payment..."

Did He ever promise to do that for you? Your faith is in your own delusion, really just a strawman to attempt to destroy other's faith, or refocus it on another god {rulemaker}.

Perhaps I should have been more precise. Obama has no political street smarts.

zzzzzzz said: "When over 50% of children are born out of wedlock the decline and rot are well underway."

And the other 50% are children of divorced parents... so what's the difference between single mother out of wedlock and divorced mother?

A two-parent family is the source of the problem. With only two parents the child is imprinted indelibly with the neurosis of the parents.

Children do need a village... an extended family... fifty aunts and uncles... so children can be exposed to many points of view, and receive support when they rebel against their mother and father, and not grow up with warped perceptions based on an unhealthy neuroses of a two-parent nuclear family.

Saxon, you have just about everything about Hitler's so-called, National Socialism absolutely wrong.

If National Socialism was a left-wing ideology, why do you think Hitler and the Nazis were so popular among the monied people throughout the West? When he was campaigning for the Conservative seat at Oxford before the war, the slogan of Quintin Hogg, later to become Thatcher's Lord Chancellor, Lord Hailsham, was 'A vote for Hogg (as he was then called) is a vote for Hitler? He won the seat! Tories, particularly, prewar, were not left-leaning one at all. They were like today's Republicans.

The following passage on fascism, appears in an article on corporatism, in Wikipedia:

"There is a very old argument about who controlled whom in Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany at various points in the timeline of power. It is agreed that the army, the wealthy, and the big corporations ended up with much more say in decision making than other elements of the corporative state[60][61][62]. There was a power struggle between the fascist parties/leaders and the army, wealthy, and big corporations. It waxed and waned as to who had more power at any given time. Scholars have used the term "Mussolini's corporate state" in many different ways."

Hitler's chief supporters were industrialists, lawyers and physicians. Those groups do not have a left-wing record. The "Socialist" speech you quote was Hitler bullshitting the people, plain and simple. He needed them as cannon-fodder.

He and Mussolini were exceptionally weak leaders. After a few years, Mussolini and his girl-friend ended up swinging upside down from lamp-posts, naked from the waist down. Someone had the decency to cover Clara's pudenda.

As for Hitler, his country was left in ruins, piles of rubble, many of the population starved to death, and an estimated 200,000 women in the East were raped; not once or a few times, but routinely and regularly over many months. That is not strong leadership. He and his regime were not good advertisements for a master-race.

Anyway, I digress. The point is, no left-wing regime has been strongly supported by industrialists, lawyers and the monied classes. Ever. The Hitler's Nazi regime and Mussolini's national Fascist Party were unambiguously at the far end of the right-wing spectrum, and definitely not Socialists beneath the sheep's clothing.

abbey said: "Perhaps I should have been more precise. Obama has no political street smarts."

How does a person with no political street smarts get the largest economic investment act in USA history passed and signed?

How does a person with no political street smarts get into the White House? Did the Illuminati wake up one morning and say: "let's put that negro into the White House? Oh, how we love negroes!"

It is demeaning to not give the man credit for his own efforts. Obama campaigned for two years to gain white voter gun-toting NASCAR-loving supporters (I remember bumper stickers that said "Rednecks for Obama") and Obama beat the Clinton machine and beat the McCain /Palin /Conservative /Neocon /Republican money and power base.

No political street smarts? Ha!

But I'm with you 100% about the imperative primacy of the nuclear family.

"Societies don't do well when the public falls into the broad despair that is the opposite of hope. That's when the long knives and the tribal animosities come out and things get smashed." The best minds at America's Ivy League colleges could not have said it better. There is already trouble brewing in the former-Yugoslavian republic of Bosnia Herzegovina as we speak. It seems the Serbs in Republic Serbia are none too happy with their Muslim and Croat neighbors in neighboring Bosnia-Herzegovina and their recent overtures to their Serbian brethren. The Serbs are accusing the Muslims and Croats of trying to extend their hegemony over Republic Serbia. The Muslims and Croats are accusing the Serbs of inflaming ethnic tensions as a pretext to invasion. Once again America finds itself in the middle of this mess because fifteen years after the end of hostilities the Americans are still the dominant peacekeepers in the region. So much for the European Union and it's promises of greater involvement in world affairs. Let's see: Iraq, Afghanistan and now Bosnia. How long are we going to do the heavy lifting for our supposed allies.

Picket:

Great Reply. I do disagree but a rational well thought out agument.

There are lawyers and industrialist that support leftist veiw points. I also disagree about who controled power in Germany, it was Hitler.

Many of your points can be directed at Mussolini and his situation in Italy.

but an agreeable agrument.

Jim--

In No Country For Old Men, Anton Shigur (allegorically Death) as he readies to dispatch the special-forces-Colonel-turned-hit-man asks "If the road you traveled led you to this what good was the road??" If all the "smart" people around the president don't get it" what good are their "smarts" and why do you find it "astonishing?" Is intellectual sophistication synonymous with being smart and down what road does it lead?? Government and politics(contrary to the grade-school brainwashing that democracy does the "right" thing) concern first and foremost Power and Money and most if not all the players are immune to moral suasion no matter how finely tuned its articulation-- None of this is altered by shouting "moron" at those "smart" enough to have not imbibed the Obama Cool-aid in the first place--

Trotskys Litterbox:

I'll bite; I have been trying for a considerable number of years to convince those into Civil War reenactments (as well as other war reenactments) to use real, LIVE ammo, so as to make it all the more realistic. Unfortunately, they seem to have a problem with this, namely the fact that they could really get hurt or killed. I have tried as hard as I can to convince them that is the realism that counts, and actually getting ones arm or leg, or even their head blown off should not stand in the way of the realism.
But they are such sissies, the seem to think it might hurt. Of course I use this as an opportunity to encourage them to drink large quantities of Jack Daniels, thus deadening the pain potential.
Ahh, but they still insist on not using live ammo. Perhaps someday.....

Oil shortages coming, store shelves are getting barer?
I hope you don't believe in all the excuses the MSM is presenting to the public.
After years and years of the
US corporate criminals and banksters screwing the rest of the world(assassinating their duly elected leaders and interfering in their affairs etc),who in their right mind would sell us anything we need on credit, when we have not paid the last bills?
From now on,I am afraid they want cash,no more credit, and, who wants the funny money Bernanke,Paulson and Geithner are printing by the truckload.
With virtually everything imported to sustain life in America,it looks like plan B will work just as well as releasing another flu virus to kill of many of us.

The only worthwhile task for intelligent, sentient species is to collectively develop technologies that will enable it to survive extinction events.

Given that all non-technological or intellectually primitive species have a lifespan
determined by the frequency of extinction events (their lives occur between these punctuated catastrophes), the motivation to build survival technologies is fairly obvious: build an ark or die trying.

That's it, that's all. Everything else is diversion, a distraction, no more than suicidal complacency.

At this point in human evolution, our energies are spent mostly in the pursuit and creation of entertainments that allow us to avoid or sublimate extinction anxiety.

Doomsday movies and apocalypse games do not inspire great changes in attitude--they displace our fears into clearly defined zones of enjoyment: they turn our anxiety into an amusement ride, and, as most people are conditioned to believe, rides are meant to be exited, at the point when the tension becomes too much or the thrills too intense.

Our fear is spent through an excess of amusement; the crisis is converted into currency for more and similar enjoyments.

A variety of futures are sold to us, for consumption, and as with every consumable object, the ephemeral satisfaction of owning the experience fades as the novelty disintegrates into ennui or jadedness--the craving for more novelty intensifies into addiction.

Addiction cares nothing for tomorrow. It wants everything today.

The development of durable survival technologies requires cross-generational memory and shared (survival) values. This collective focus unites populations while honoring and acknowledging individual effort. Traditions of co-operation are expressed through art and literature. Expressions of human values maintain their pre-eminence over purely technological imperatives of machine logic and machine efficiency. The goal is not speed itself, for the sake of speed: it is the perpetuation of the human experience in a way that makes longevity worth having.

The moral question is how to remain human without becoming a machine. It asks:

If the goal of a conscious machine is to become (a) human (analog), why would the human wish to become a machine?

If the goal of virtual reality is to create landscapes and experiences indistiguishable from the natural world, why would we destroy the natural world to create virtual realities?

The evolutionary path to human survival demands that we ask these questions every day, while maintaining our focus on the only project worth doing: ensuring the survival of our species. Not as murdering machines, but as careful cultivators of a bio-organic future.

can you further elucidate?

You making a very compelling argument, Sebastian. I stand corrected. You're an icon round here, you know.

Seriously, though, you want to get off those drugs before they do you real harm.

I realise now what it was about James's characterisations of 'reality' and 'history' that tickled me to bits. He used them a bit like the characters in Aesop's fables!

A kind of extension of the pathetic fallacy! Attributing a personality - a mean and menacing one - to abstract concepts! In a very dry and ironic way, bearing in mind our human propensity for extremities of folly.

Look, something is coming. Peak Oil-Already. Mid-East war - how big?..... Terror in unpredictable ways - cyber, dirty bomb, bio, etc.
Over 90 % of the population could/would die in the
right kind of infrastructure attack (EMT pulse??..)
And of course the best might be slow Malthusian extinction. Probably we are being watched by ET's of some higher form. Whether they give a crap is another matter. I suspect, if so, a "rapture" of some to join a new ant farm is always a possibility.

RE: capitalizing whites

I think whites are sufficiently capitalized already.

My name's not Sebastian; my initials are S.E.B. My name's Sephen Eric Billinghurst and I am fat like a Sebastian Cabot or a Dom Delouise. Don't think of me as Seb the tub of lard in a red plaid vest with a proper British accent. I don't even want to be Burl Ives at Christmastime, a perrenial Disney favorite. These guys had to be, just had to be chomo.

Thanks for "Hogg". I was trying to reconstruct "Mogg". I do not actually take any drugs. I just quote myself back when I took them.
I took them and "tried to fly". That is, to do the hardest thing. To be a projectile hammering senselessly at the same blank spot on a brick wall until it fractures. I esp. like to say names until they mean words, which explains what each person does for a living. Jobs are nice work if you can get it, many of them.

I was going to look up what you people were talking about, but the word "opinion" triggered me. Would an option to go to war ever be subject to a first refusal?

Enter the dragon.

STEVE This was a nightmare. I called the police for an escort and they said the only way they were coming out there was to arrest me.
JUDGE BOSTWICK Despite yor opinion, they don't do that. I'm ordering that he show up at ten a.m. on Saturday to remove personal effects, and you, Mom, you call the police to keep the peace. I am giving him an opportunity to retain counsel, and in the meantime the TRO remains in full force and effect.

(My "opinion"? Au contraire, dill wad. I called and got a dispatcher named Trixie and she told me I couldn't be within 1,000 yards of the residence; that they were not going to pick up my belongings (meaning physically touch the scabrous and sebacious disgusting skidmarked underwear), and that surely I did not want them to come out and just arrest me. I did not heartily agree. I was to get a sick headache and I still have it.

Now, you people go on ontificating about heads of state and no one mashes your pie hole shut, so you draw unwarranted conclusions all day willy-nilly. We go forwards on a basis of proof of life.

JUDGE Hello, this is a judge. I'd like the ransom paid.
TRACIE How do we know this is you?
JUDGE Look, I went to Family Law School. Ask me anything.
TRACIE What's the password?
JUDGE P-E-A-C-E
TRACIE Nawp (hangs up).

So, you are diddling along and there is a great divide in your comprehension, and, this is just me, I wonder why it is right at the level you live at. You know about President Obama's world better'n he does, but you don't know about how the USA comes to have the highest incarceration rate in the world, how it can be convicted of TORTURE OF PRISONERS in recent history, yet, just mothers and fathers, now, their Judge maintains that the police run things the way he tells them to. Oh, whelps, yer still wet behind the ears. They all know a fatal train wreck when the bodies bubble to the surface. One bobs up, they calmly pole it back down. "Judges", you'll notice, are dead center for malfeasance. Bernie Madoff was toppled when the economy melted down, but what makes judges topple anyway?

Now you're talking about 200,000 being raped for months. I was at an AA meeting and I dry-heaved during the Serenity Prayer as I was holding hands with a guy, I just don't know could smell so bad. Different things smell different, but Holy Mother of God when it is past hair, urine, feces, body odor, all the way to plague, well---here's what I mean: The passage with the rotting horse in The Summer of '42.

Now, it's hard to get somebody to throw up reading, so, when I am tired, ...no, when I am away from pen and paper, a story plays out in words, hundreds of words. I think that books are bound together purposefully, since even one page missing ruins it. Sometimes a book has a good part, but always, I want to tell the court, whatever is stated at the outset holds for the entire epistle. It doesn't but take effect. It never expires. The justice system relies on fine print, relies on ignorance of the law, and holds property until the fees exceed its value. This country almost self-destructed as soon as they wrote its crooked Constitution.

"How am I looking?"
"Steve (choke), judging from your writing, it seems to be something a giant suppurating cockroach would have penned."

We aim to hit. We over back here and they, Barger's Hell's Angels, we make a "we", and we are allied in our commitment. you, featureless planetitizens, or any citizens, think about things beyond yor ken, and you handle it. How, well, let me help you. As you fantasize getting raped anally, use the feeling a turd gives you as it exits your bum. But us, what we really do is visualize your liver. you, say, a female security guard are going to deny me passage;

STEVE Let me pass.
GUARD No.

Okay, fine. Until your liver comes partially or fully out of your abdomen, I am going to consider my work unfinished. Not your stinking butt, sir. we'll ride into town on Harleys and probably see shirt-tails flapping in the breeze as all the men cry, "The time has come". That's not right. Our time is limited. We have to run down a line of you at a speed to match the firing rate of this weapon, such that a bullet goes into each hostage. At Bellau Wood, it took the generals days to adapt to the new ways, 75,000 killed in the first wave, 1.5 million for this battle. We tap the machine gun so the bullets change who's on line. let's divide out a gross, 144, so, in a fast argument, the casualties/KIA can be more adjusted to your way of thinking, gross/net/total. Rounded, 521. Then, 10,417, rounded. I respectfully submit our civilian expected losses in the 144 largest cities in the initial SHTF. The more you bug A. Hitler, the more rest he'll get in the grave on your shift.

I'm an icon? Kunstler's my linchpin. I'm trusting him that this is really it, then I am doing the insane thing of publishing all I know about making speed, as if public and private enterprise has now taken on the aspect of profiting through the industrialization of methods of depopulation.

Jim, you are one of the greats among the handful of visionary American citizen-pundits (Wendell Berry, Bill McKibbon, etc.). This week's post is an excellent example of your gift. Core issues identified, reality and truth expressed, solutions articulated = paradigm shift! (As opposed to the delusionary "return to growth" consumerist model you describe.) I would like to see you gain even wider readership and broaden your influence. Why not pitch your weekly posts to Huffpo, Slate, etc.? We gotta get the word out to more citizens. No more John the Baptist crying out in the wilderness, main street USA needs your love. Thanks for your inspired thinking.

For over thirty years since President Carters electoral defeat the great political wisdom has been that americans are too stupid to handle the truth about how their world actually works. Rarely is the premise even tested nowadays.

If Obama had come forth with a "green jobs" program that consisted of solar panels, energy retrofits, neighborhood heating/cooling districts and ground-source heat pumps for all he would have been shot already. The programs would also have put $$ into the pockets of citizens each and every month after installation.

The examples on this board abound. The idiots that think we can expel mexican immigrants and ignore that they do ALL the work in meat packing plants and pick all the fruits and vegetables. The morons that insist that Hitler was a leftist without bothering to read history. (hint: Hitler rounded up the Communists BEFORE he rounded up the Jews and Gypsies) The white nazis.

My favorite idiots are the ones who think rural people stand a chance against massed urban armies. Sherman's march through the south should have fixed that. Before WWII the simple solution to rural insurgents was to burn any village that harbored them and kill all men of military age. The Ottoman Turks controlled the Middle East for a thousand years that way.

Oh, and gay marriage; best idea ever. If your brother is gay he's going to help you out without worrying about the cost of his own kids. If he has a partner he isn't as likely to cause trouble by sucking off horny teenagers who can't get girlfriends yet.

That's what comes of drinking corn whiskey and pisswater beer; morons. A bit of science fiction wisdom titled "The Marching Morons" was written in the 50's that explained how advertising, combined with an ever-stupider populace, was going to lead the world to disaster. It's time you read it.

James, this posting has hit the nail squarely on the head of it all. Americans have been walking in a stupor for decades. They cannot see what is clearly in front of them. The Obama administration continues to pass out the Kool-Aid allowing working Americans to feel intoxicated by their false-hope messages.

The investment banking crime syndicate is preparing for a cushioned fall once they have to write off their trillions in toxic losses. They already run the government. But, the future will become part of their corporate portfolio.

The jobless figures are not going away. Probably ever. This is the great unwinding for the nation. It is a collapse of a significant magnitude. It is all being hidden behind the rising DOW current as the Federal Reserve controls the "free market". Americans will live close to the economic leash clasp. There will be no room for relaxed spending. It all will be personally scrutinized.

Living extremely simply with the goal.

WE NEED GOVERNMENT RUN HEALTH INSURANCE

2,266 veterans under the age of 65 died last year as a result of not having health insurance.

Researchers emphasize that "that figure is more than 14 times the number of deaths (155) suffered by U.S. troops in Afghanistan in 2008."

--Harvard Medical School study

And no other president in the last hundred years has gotten as far as Obama in health/insurance reform, so it appears he has the experience needed to bring about changes no other president has been able to effect.

I'm still trying to learn what this "experience" is. He was a "community walker", annnddd.....?????
Well, I have to say he is pretty good with a teleprompter and then there's those two books.

I think the "change" we're going to get is not what most voters had in mind.

Frightening.

"Well, I have to say he is pretty good with a teleprompter and then there's those two books."

And then there was that little law degree from Harvard where he was editor of the Law Review.

Then there was the little thing about being a Senator representing the State of Illinois and writing and passing legislation to prevent loose nukes from destroying the United States.

And don't forget about Obama's legislative work on the Illinois Death Penalty, and how he made a difference between life and death.

Don't forget Obama's sponsorship of a bill that brought health insurance to 150,000, including 70,000 uninsured Children, again, during his time serving in the Illinois Statehouse.

Obama's experience also includes work on both the Immigration bill during his time in the US senate and his sponsorship of Ethics legislation (something he did both while in the State House, and in the Senate) that called for some of the most important reform regarding lobbyists since Watergate.

And he does just fine without a teleprompter. He answers questions in complete sentences in interviews and does not butcher the English language like Bush did.

And, yes, writing two books is an accomplishment most other presidents cannot claim.

The whole drive to boosterism is predicated upon being a booster for something which is going to happen anyway. Unless there's change, time doesn't even pass. So let's be for change. Let's claim it is "time". Time for what? Why, for change, of course. The motions and manners of the candidate stir up enthusiasm and the projection of heartfelt desires of any old kind are welcomed on the shoulders of this marionette. It is a confidence game. How could confidence help but to accumulate if the candidate merely fails to step on his own dick, especially when not one person saw through the brain-dead proclamation that whoo, boy, we need our change naow. wtf?

You put stuff on the news every day, you put on the TV and there it is, and do you really think those people in the news want to be there? What about the folks who say they are doing just fine and to leave them off the news? did you think they disappeared? Did you think they didn't matter? They just didn't need for you to know about them. Whoever you do know about isn't pert.

DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT PARKING HERE

I'm going to think abut it.
I'm going to talk about it.
I'm going to write about it.

Sure close down the coal industry-just as oil is running out. We might need that dirty stuff and nuclear too. Some of us have to live in the real world Asoka. After all we can't all be coffee colored faries flitting about sowing seeds of bruthahood with one hand and seeds of hatred towards Whites with the other. Bruthas in the hood is all you care about. You talk about transcending Race but no one is more obsessed with it than you-not even me. And I don't talk about transcending it-I'm not the hypocrite here.

Who cares? Well knucklehead, you obviosly care alot. As do many of your cohort. I have touched a thread of passion here. It such a small courtesy after all, but people often reveal themselves through such small things. You refuse because of your hatred. You people "believe" in harmony between the Races, yet you feel oblgigated to hate Whites. Indeed it is your pleasure as well. Well since you get to do it, Blacks feel they can too. And so there goes what you thought you believed in. Or do you not think that setting a good example is important? Or walking your talk?

Look, is there any real person in your life that you respect spirtually? Some Lama? An elder brother in the Sangha? Ask them if hating some Whites is ok. In the name of the God you don't believe in, what the hell is wrong with you? You have been caught red handed: a dirty nasty little boy with sticky fingers, his face covered with fudge. And so you will remain until you repent.

Watch a Christmas Carol-it is all about what you have to do.

Amen brother. I'm in recovery. Had an interesting experience with that verse you often refer to about the Nicolaites. I have a friend who has become a Christian Atheist. Some crap about the death of God. Apparently very influental though. As a confused but pious person, I could not contain my disgust. How can God die I reasonably asked. He wasn't talking about Christ, but God (they don't go into the Trinity) These people just want God to flicker in and out of existence at their whim. It's theology divorced not only from Revelation but even from the Natural Light of our Minds and Law in our Hearts which the Fall could not efface. This festered for a couple of weeks, and finally he burst out in a rage at me for not believing this crap. I was amazed-I had no idea that he felt this strongly. Not only was I offended but saddened that he had fallen into something so ridiculous.

I felt disturbed for days and then in one evening I came across the verse (which I had not known) and heard a preacher talk about it on the radio a half hour later. A very strong consolation came over me-I felt reassured that I was not wrong to feel the revulsion that I felt. Nor had I been wrong in not hiding it-even if I could have!

Fascism is often called the Third Way-in other words neither Capitalism or Communism. It has elements of both Capitalism and Socialism, but it is not just a mixture either. Rather it based on a completely different principle-one of Nationalism. And Economics are subordinate to that and not the Nation to Economics as is the case with both Capitalism and Socialism.

Nor can it be simply equated with Totalitarianism-as some lefties try to do. No, they respected private property of both the high and the low. They simply demanded that the rich put their industries and abilities at the service of the State. Yes, it was very centralized like Stalin's Soviety Union, but they did not try to erase history. No for Fascists, a Nation without a past is a plant without a root-Dead.

These are some of the essential elements of Fascism. There can be bad Fascism as well as good-it depends on the ruling ethos, the Party, and the Leader. Hitler wanted to go back to Pagan Glory. Mussolini-to the Glory of Rome. Each thought his Nation had a special destiny above that of others. But Franco did not feel this way. He was proud of Spain and her Culture, but that was all. He didn't think they had a Destiny to conquer the World. He was a good Son of the Church-and made Spain a Catholic Country, but was tolerant of other Faiths to some degree. It came to light that he thought that He had been chosen by God to liberate Spain, but that was just his private revelation that he shared with a few friends. He never promulgated a Cult of Himself like the other two.

Codrescu's Legion of Michael had a similar vision for Romainia-except they were Orthodox. And they failed whereas Franco triumphed for a generation. His nephew threw it all away. Now they have nude beaches, below replacement birthrate, and millions of Muslims and Third Worlders.

Now our Tradition is Anglo Saxon and does not lend itself to Fascism. We are very independent people and believe in checks and balances. That's fine with me-I like it. But we should try to understand European Traditions and not just despise them and lump them all together as bad. Fascism is a philosophy-not just a pejorative. You have to almost get to graduate school before they let you know that. Fascism has a great Strength-someone defined it as the modern Nation State under attack. Even our Republic acts like a Fascist State when we are attacked-perhaps you've noticed! This is a very old Tradition-the ancient Romans had a War Chief who took over when things got bad-democracy takes too long during crisis. Many peoples have had this apparently-some of the American Indians for example.

You have just described the synopsis of Infinite Jest David Foster Wallace's incredible novel of the near future. A brilliant genius.

Here's Levy BHL on our cowardice concerning the Soviet regime.

Read him Jaego.

"How long are we going to do the heavy lifting for our supposed allies."

And how long before they are pulling down Clinton's statue?

"None of this is altered by shouting "moron" at those "smart" enough to have not imbibed the Obama Cool-aid in the first place--"

Amen... I despise the assumption that anyone critical of this administration MUST be racist, lumpen, or repugnicant. I will continue to ask the Obamatrons to accept their responsibility, just to point out that it would not have made any difference. We are farmed.

I'm going to be me, myself and I since nobody will talk to me.

Sir, tell us about yourself if you desire to rent a home in this comment section.

I'm a Baron Harkkonen type, from the movie Dune. I float just above the floor, or sometimes way above it, near the ceiling, and I can levitate down to look you in the face, all the while making a whistling, whirring kind of levitating sound, like in the cartoons. I'm sorry I have to paint a word picture, but, you can't see me. If you could, you might notice that I have several large and rather nasty knots on my forehead, coupla bumps nobody says anything about because they aren't going away. That's how people are, awestruck by permanent misfortune while becoming cruel martinets if they only cost me money, or see me fall. I'm up here in my bathrobe, quilted uniform of the baronet.

I'm back to one person now, to confront you. You put up some deal by a Frog. I keep track of my violations against the nationalities of others. Ask not for whom the bell tolls. In this 229-strong burgeoning village of a comment section on the banks of the Wabash, I don't know, you have a novel Dune, but that was pre-Kunstler, so, he's bald, is there going to be a novel Dome? So, can we have a dystopia a linear combination of inverted, perverted, unflattering novels about the peole who write them, like, "Minutes of the Inquisition"?

They've had a hoax book written by a bunch of authors. They tied each chapter together in the synopsis, but would you be reading and say, "I think this chapter was written by somebody other than who wrote some of the other chapters", because, I doubt that anybody did that. Now, look at this ________ you had me read:

the long, silent, angry murmur of people who, on the ground, had understood for a long time and who were only waiting for the final spark to dare say that the king, or in other words the dictatorship, was naked.

This confusion is more than a mistake; it is a fault.

It is worse than a legend; it is disinformation.

And this disinformation, far from dissipating the lie, revives it in another way.

This is how we scratch out, in spirit, decades of the history of thought and of struggle.

And this is how we lay the foundation for tomorrows that will become disillusioned with a rewritten, distorted, revised History.

Abbey, this is obviously translated Frog. Since we call ourself Abbeys books, isn't it probable that your estimates of the genius level of some of these authors is a little bit inflated? What about it, fellow readers? And who is---no, who made you, Abbey? Dor mais vous?

I just read "sexism kills" on that site you linked, and it was all full of popups (chill, Billinghrst) (but it wouldn't scroll down!) (she's sensitive)(I'm going to get her picture. She drinks tea!). So semenism kills, huh? You are doing that "Tiny URL", aren't you? Why? Stop fixing! Leave it messy.

"The only worthwhile task..." will be made into a poster and given to all my loved one. Thank You!

Well, there's an Abbey's Bookshop in Sydney, Austalia. There's also a blog. That's inconclusive proof.

You do promote books (and so do they).

I'm getting to that (why that's not necessarily good). First, my favorite ferry, the one Shakespeare used. I don't mean he rode on it. That's not the point. Reading book after book's not the point, BTW. Reading the top 100 books is the point. It doesn't help the bottom line over at Abbey's Bookshop, it just enables the survivalist illiterate punk to hold out on pork ' beans awhile longer. If you want people to buy things, might I suggest methamphetamine? Don't go to heroin. There's too many headaches from all the money you'll make. What's that? Oh, you say that after reading them, the books make a dandy pillow? No they don't. I've tried it. One single roll of toilet paper with a folded T-shirt on top of it lets you fall asleep, no unstacked rolls or corners of books rattling around in a pillowcase, no stinking shoes please. Oh, we already bought so many Shakespeares we rip out the good parts and send them as gifts. It makes Shakespeare scream in agony. You never had ice cream, William.

Found it TRANECT - a ferry. I think of it as "try and connect", like a ferry does. I was trying to bridge something at the outset.

I'm not Dracula, but in the morning the WiFi is overloaded quickly. This'll be my last post. I promise to be invidious to anyone who says beans to me.

Here's the URL, unmolested:

Quit it. My relative positioning with Shakespeare is different than it is with, say, rock songs. WS is another planet, and stays at a given distance from me, another planet. Okay, moon. STITHY, ROUNDEL, it sooooo good. POUNCET-BOX, for holding perfumes; I thought it said a pound of crack.

Kunstler is correct, at least according to Warren Buffett. Buffett just spent $44 billion to buy
a railroad.Buffett is smarter than anyone on this blog and far more successful.
An article by Michael Hampton titled Warren Buffett vs Soccer Moms explains it and mentions Kunstler in the article. Worth a quick read.
Another article Titled The Dollar Meltdown Review by Michael Nystrom is a short essay on what the U.S. will face in the near future.

I am out of here, I had my 12th operation , this one on my knee last Friday, I have healed enough to get out and resume being a titan of industry. I have spent that last 25 years traveling the world on business. Mostly in Asia. Although Kunstler and I would not agree politically on much , he is correct in what he is saying on energy and what is going to happen to the U.S in the future. I have see a great deal in 25 years and delt with many cultures, all of which makes me think Kunstler is correct in much of what he says. The future is staring you in the face, yet many of you and most Americans refuse to see it.

Good luck

I do disagree but a rational well thought out agument.(sic)
==================================
Oh....I see, it's a 'well thought out argument' you want huh?

If I insisted that the moon was hollow (offered by a NASA scientist in 1959) and that colored lights were photographed there that cannot be explained (well documented) then suggested that it is logical to conclude that the moon is artificially made and that aliens are using it as a base (available on the web), would I deserve a “well thought out argument” in reply?

The canard you repeated from a fringe website stating that “Hitler is a leftist”, can only be accepted by someone who is either; uneducated, isn't well enough equipped intellectually to discern valid evidence, or has ceased using anything but innuendo and hype as a form of “proof”. According to you (or the nut job website where you got this nonsense) we should abandon the evidence of Hitler imprisoning and killing all the socialists and communists in Germany as soon as he got a chance, then invading the Soviet Union to continue the crusade, giving explicit orders to eliminate all party officials as they were found. We should toss out this evidence apparently, based on an antiquated definition and interpretation of the term socialism used by Hitler in one of his documents, which he never actuated in any case.

We're not here to 'school' you about how to parse fact from fiction, or talk you down from some fringe political/social ledge onto which you have crawled. If you want to be taken seriously then don't make posts here like an uneducated tobacco chewing hillbilly with a computer. As it stands thus far, you deserve little more than the ridicule you've recieved.

I see.....I follow accepted usage and do not capitalize "white" as in white culture and that means I hate myself and the white race?

Even by your standards Jaego that's a pretty thin cord of reality you're hanging onto.

According to ABC world news, the psychopathic psychiatrist who went on a shooting rampage in Fort Hood, Texas was in the FBI's cross hairs for quite some time, due to his activities with various Islamic extremists. Not surprisingly, the military did nothing to remove him even when he was counseling young army grunts to go AWOL if they were ever called up to serve in Iraq or Afghanistan. However, according to some sources, because the Army psychiatrist was a devout Muslim and a "self-identified" Palestinian" he fell into the category of "protected minority" and the military kept their hands off him. How's that for "multiculturalism" and "diversity" for you! Were the madman a Lutheran or Episcopalian, he surely would have been drummed out long ago for his extremist beliefs.

It's flag waving, nationalistic, warmongering day!

Here's an antidote to the propaganda.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsrMzfhdmkU

asoka-his-pants sez:

"Obama will effect changes in energy and alternative power sources and climate change legislation that no other president has been able to do."

He will do no such thing. Why you may ask? Because the ROE on alternative energy is laughable. You can not mandate the market place to invest in a promise of profits that may happen somewhere down the line.

There are those who were badly burned investing in ethanol before this market went to shit. You think there are takers for this silly green energy tripe when the greenback has fallen so low that you can just about burn them for energy? You are a misguided M-O-R-O-N.

"It's flag waving, nationalistic, warmongering day!"

It is no such thing you stupid douche-bag. It is a day of appreciation for those servicemen and women who had the fucking nads to risk all for pussies like you.

"With PE multiples at levels reflecting a booming economy the markets are completely disconnected from reality."

The market has its own reality. If you are not aware of this you have no business investing. There is a saying that "The trend is your friend." You are trying to counter the trend. It ain't working. Give it a break before it breaks you.

ASOKA: "I trusted God to make my mortgage payment..."

MESSIANICDRUID: "Did He ever promise to do that for you?"

Yes, God did promise to pay my mortgage and from my experience God is not trustworthy.

God's promise is in the Bible, which some consider God's word.

Matthew 6: verses 25-34.

Really? I think you may have been hearing voices. Regarding Matthew, in particular, verse 33:

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

Maybe God figured out you're a fucking phony and decided to not cut you the rent check? Just sayin' (Fucking dink.)

SEB: Well, how about Burl Ives as Big Daddy in Cat on a hot tin roof?

And which Dune? David Lynchs' Dune perchance?

zzzz, you got it exactly right. The mortgage payment was due the next day.

God was very specific: Take no thought for the morrow, seek first God's kingdom.

Motherfucker defaulted and cannot be trusted.

God is clear though about THOU SHALT NOT KILL... don't mince no words about "kill" versus "murder" like punks do.

meanwhile Newsweek..all 64 pages of it..yaks on about the BULL RUN the dow is in..the chart said otherwise to my eyes

We just don't seem to get it. Check out the article in the Nov 2009 Scientific American titled, The Future of Cars.

Internal combustion engines still the norm into the 2030's? Social networking? Congestion mitigation? Gas prices to remain low over the next decade?

Seriously....it was difficult to read without a gaping jaw.

Matthew 6: verses 25-34 do not say anything about a mortgage, a payment or asoka. One could take "raiment" to include shelter, but not shelter based on debt. God does not commit Himself to pay your debts, but to set you free by teaching you the truth. The truth is you can have shelter without debt. The borrower is the slave {servant} of the lender. The key of course, is seeking first the kingdom {a form of government} of God. A law of this government says not to collect usury. One would have to wonder if it includes paying usury as this would be helping {causing} another to sin {transgress the law 1 John 3:4}. Since getting out of debt is getting out of slavery, God would not get you out of debt if you are just going to turn around and get back into debt {death - mort - gauge} slavery. What would be the point?

Well David Foster Wallace got a McArthur genius grant and was one of the youngest ever. And yes he is one-or was.

No one can ever make a decision without going to their superior, who must go to their superior, who must go to.....and so it goes.

Yaaaaay! Let's see some pics of vets with their faces blown off, paraplegics, you know lots of gory stuff to celebrate about.

I saw the big one do that in NY. Wonderful.

Accepted useage? Accepted by whom? And do they capitalize Black Culture like you do? Eh, Hypocrite? Your rationalization: Whites don't have any culture of their own-a complete nonsense statement even from a leftist. Or did you just mean American Whites? So you would be willing to capitalize European White Culture?

The psychic process which animates you and other members of the PC Cult in terms of the Four Positions of Transactional Analysis: First the four postions: I'm Ok, you're not Ok.
I'm not Ok, you're Ok.
I'm not Ok, you're not Ok.
I'm Ok, you're Ok.

Now PC's accept White, Western Guilt for all the historical sins the Whites committed, and for ALL the present suffering in the Third World.
Thus their abstract position is We're not Ok, but you (non Whites) are Ok. They then feel completely absolved of guilt and free to denigrate and despise Whites who do not make the confession of guilt. Their position in regards to these Whites is We're Ok, you all are not Ok. And this hatred is intense, petty, and personal as the former guilt is abstract and diffuse (usually). So it's a pretty good deal for people who need to hate others. Basically it's a illicit union between Marxism and Christianity. The structure is Christian and details are Marxist. Believeing in the Revolution and the Overthrow of White, Western Culture is equivalent to believing in Christ and thus being saved. The non believers are heathen scum who need be destroyed. Thus Political Correctness is an extreme Fundamentalism akin to Wahabism and Al Qaeda.

In reality, many PCs have very little real interest in or knowledge of the minorities they profess to love. They are just the tokens and sacred cows by which salvation is bought. When they do meet minorities, PCs engage in gushing and ritual submission-not real relationship or conversation. The average PC knows Nothing about other cultures and cares to know nothing. They just want gush and buy pottery and trinkets-which are talismans which confer blessings in the Faith.

For Jaego. From the final lectures by Foucault before he died. Racism is explained via war. Considered one of the most original minds of the 20th century. This is dazzling to read. The entire essay:

http://www.sunysb.edu/philosophy/faculty/emendieta/articles/foucault.pdf

To make live and to let die’ –Foucault on Racism

And with the inscription of racism within the state of biopower, the long history of war
that Foucault has been telling in these dazzling lectures has made a new turn: the war of
peoples, a war against invaders, imperials colonizers, which turned into a war of races, to
then turn into a war of classes, has now turned into the war of a race, a biological unit,
against its polluters and threats. Racism is the means by which bourgeois political power,
biopower, re-kindles the fires of war within civil society. Racism normalizes and
medicalizes war. Racism makes war the permanent condition of society, while at the
same time masking its weapons of death and torture. As I wrote somewhere else, racism
banalizes genocide by making quotidian the lynching of suspect threats to the health of
the social body. Racism makes the killing of the other, of others, an everyday occurrence
by internalizing and normalizing the war of society against its enemies. To protect society
entails we be ready to kill its threats, its foes, and if we understand society as a unity of
life, as a continuum of the living, then these threat and foes are biological in nature.

From my lectures: Racism is a normal love for your own people. It need not involve hate at all. Hate will arise if aliens are forced on a given people and given rights over this people. In which case, the hate could be called-The Hate which Hate hath wrought.

Virtually all the French Intellectuals of the last century were Marxists. And early in the century, Marxists like Adorno and Gramsci noted the chink in Western Man's armor and decided to focus most of their efforts on Race. Needless to say this has been wildly successful. To expect the SIMPLE truth about Race from these freaks-many of them gay-all of them traitors-is Folly. Abbey I cannot follow you into the stinking morass of French Intellectualism. I find their convoluted language difficult to understand. And when deciphered, almost never worth the effort. Sartre was different-a transitional figure between classical Philosophy and "Cultural Studies". He is clear in his exposition-and very alien. In short a towering figure-Hell has a new Titan. His immortal question, "Is Marxism a Humanism?" has a simple answer, NO. "A" Humanism worthy of the name is based on the person. Marxism only cares about "the people". What an Idol that is! And Feminism, being a Marxism is therefore not a Humanism. It cares nothing for women but only their "Liberation"-their worth as soldiers in the war against White Men and Western Civilization.

As I have said before, the Truth about this is simple if you are-it's not rocket science. That may be hard for a complex person like you to deal with-nuancing can be an addiction. Look how you blew it with the Roman Polanski issue. Sometimes simple people have an advantage-they aren't tempted to see all sides of a clear cut issue. Sometimes there is only one viable side.

The simple Truth: we are both Organisms of the same sub species, let's say the native red squirrel of England. The invading alien Grey Squirrels are taking out ecosystem, our niche. Do we fight or run. Doing nothing is not an option. We run and keep running. Now there is no place left to run-it's fight or die. Are you with us the Red Squirrels or a you a Grey Sympathizer? The blurb you posted clearly thought it was a non issue-but thought itself superior to all contending sides-Wrong. That's just the arrogance of the alienated brain that lives "inside" the body. The askesis of the intellectual is simple and humble choice and committment. Red or Grey Abbey. Become the centaur-a mind and body functioning together as a seamless whole. Choose.

I will read Houellebecq's Atomized because he is leaving the hall of dirty mirrors. But Focault? Fuck Focault! Umberto Eco is clear writer-I recently read a good essay he wrote on Fascism-very clear. He rejects it of course, he is too cerebral, effete and corrupt to even will anything that he could not be the master of. He is happy to roll over for the Muslim Barbarians. I think alot of them actually enjoy it! The Queer Factor again. Anything but join with the "Roughs" of their own Race-see above post to Dale for the reasons. It's a religon-one that you have not renounced yet either.

zzzzzz Says "It is no such thing you stupid douche-bag. It is a day of appreciation for those servicemen and women who had the fucking nads to risk all for pussies like you."

Tell us zzzzzz how many years active duty did you give to our country? SNAFU

"God is clear though about THOU SHALT NOT KILL... don't mince no words about "kill" versus "murder" like punks do."

Hmmm... Which "god" you speaking about? Muhammad wants the infidels killed. (As in dead.)

asoka his pants sez:

"WE NEED GOVERNMENT RUN HEALTH INSURANCE

2,266 veterans under the age of 65 died last year as a result of not having health insurance."

So lets provide them with health insurance. Why does the government have to RUN it? The government can't run a fucking red light. Get that H1N1 shot yet? Oh thats right there isn't any available. Why? Government fucked it up. And on and on and on. Yawn.

So Obama's a lawyer. Well, that don't impress me much. That's part of what's wrong with this country. Too damn many lawyers and now we have one in the White House. Greaaat.....

Ethics?!?! Still waiting for him to smack down the pigs on Wall Street (and elsewhere) with some "ethics".....Will never happen. He's been bought too.

Lobbyist reform? Where? When he tells them all to get the hell out of Washington, THAT would be reform I could believe in.

Immigration? So he supports sending all immigrants who are here illegally (I think that means they are *breaking the law*)back where they came from? Really?

Bush was an embarrassment but this guy creeps me out. His words are very carefully crafted by his handlers. Every time I hear him speak I'm trying to figure out whether it's real or just an act. I think very few of us know what his true agenda is, but we're beginning to get a clue here and there.

As I said, frightening.

Jaego,
I wasn't even able to make it all the way through your last post to me about how you've been so terribly victimized.

You alternate between being the swaggering fascist bully and the wimpy whining victim so quickly I question if you might not be bi-polar.

I do not agree with the racism of having non-whites be removed from the country, this would not solve anything but only serve to decrease the harmony and diversity that makes the country great. Obviously, people of all races and ethnic backgrounds are supposed to share the land - that's the way Mother Nature set it up!

To protect the earth, the people and the environment in general, it will take a monumental effort across all races, regions and countries and these should be applied evenly and fairly to everyone. How it will be implemented is TBD but somehow, someway changes must be made to scale back energy consumption, greenhouse gases, pollution and all the other negative impacts to the environment. This white supremacy stuff is no good. I mean, it's not like you chose the color of your skin when you were born.

If civilization collapses into total chaos and dieoff, that will not be good for any of us.

Oh, goodie. Abbey Damned notices moi. Abbey Grahib.

I get up in the morning. No, you'll miss it if you start there. "Start there". Hmm, no. Don't read that. I want to use, "stark terror", and you're liable to see where I got it from. Start over. Maestro? Hello, genius. Play or I'll perforate your legs, and we don't use metal shards. A Claymore mine is epononymous. A hand grenade inside a tank turret is euphoneous. I'm an American, therefore, when I lose it, I want the enemy writhing on the ground with little plastic fleshettes in their body. I want Japs squatting on the railroad platform in Hiroshima, shitting diarrhrea (THE WAY WE SPELL IT)alphabet soup for three weeks until they die. I don't want you to see where I got it from. I want to come off like a genius.

I now direct yur attention to the top of this page, where it says, "Clusterfuck Nation." That might suggest that despite all our military genius, we are cruising for a bruising. But, the whole discourse is only predicated upon security. Like Brave New World, we got to one of those places in history where more and more genius is more and more brutality. Now, what we need is brutality for brutality's sake, and stop this culture of one-upness.

However, I am pontificating. I am taking the moral high ground. That's what goes on here; that's what's wrong. Kunstler writes with the full expectation that someone is reading, thinking, "Where are you going with this?" And then, by the end of the paragraph they are saying, "Oh, now I get it. Rose petals at your feet. Bravo!" Nah. The longer it takes to say anything, the more lies go in there. Another genius at lying, whose lying parents failed to see the nightmare future and have the righteous nightmare where God sent an angel to afflict the father and cause him to grab the baby out of the crib and bash its brains out on a corner of the wall! Umm, which has happened. Kid was a genius-to-be, dad had a bad dream. He used the ankle.

We do not need to get it. We are named "Steve-un!", an easily-terrorized name screamed out. Some people just want to see the world burn (Batman). Kunstler saw The Dark Knight. It was the title of one of his posts. He can make anything mean anything. Here he is:

History is reality's big brother. It is taking us someplace that we don't want to go, so it will probably have to drag us there kicking and screaming. For starters, both reality and history will probably take us out to some woodshed of the national soul and beat the crap out of us. That could be a salutary thing, since the crap consists of all the lies we tell ourselves. Once we're rid of all that, we

Reality is history's big brother. Now I'm bringing in Dee Jones, as well as you. Abbey could be ear-splitting, but it would come out, "Ab-bay!", and you are insulated. That's not your name. Dee says to love Burl Ives. No, impossible. Him and Kurt Russell and especially Annette Funicello, these are the pod people. We'll revolt here, because there is not enough salutary(Kunstler's word) in American life to offset the gratuitous torture, courtesy in part of the chomo Walter Elias Disney, and all his "Imagineering". At some level genius means thinking. To take thought (WS) means to dwell in grief. No! No more thinking. Whenever one of these weaponized chimpanzees, like in Congress, gets the ball, they run with it. No more laws! Thinking is a harmful activity. Ideas are dangerous to freedom. Thought is a plague upon us.

I'm bringing in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in cross-examination. Paul Newman was in that. Paul Newman also played Judge Roy Bean. In that movie he said, "The law is the handmaiden of justice", and once, he said, "Justice is the handmaiden of the law", and a guy said, "I thought you said the law was the handmaiden of justice"; and he said, "It is. It works both ways." The biggest laugh of the film, a film about a guy saying genius things just so he can perform ad hoc hangings, because he is a simply mahvelous judge, a judge warming the cockles of the American black heart, like Indiana Jones smoking a towelhead who only has a sword. Burl Ives is so insanely syrupy smooth, you want to see his belly where it hangs over his belt. You want to know whose little girl he fucks in his off hours. I worked at Disneyland. Instead of paying yo a living wage, they let it be a hotbed of sex. You can't quit. These poor niggers in America, thanks to Disney we are told how to think about them. I'm sure they have the right word. The blacks themselves have another Disneyesque character of the Burl Ives stripe, Nat "King" Cole, too dumb to quit smoking, possessed of a name evocative of gnats swirling around a nappy head, all this part of the gig, the blanket-party hijacking of robotic made-for TV "talent", all created, right? All Raggety Anne, who to hate, who to love, what heartstrings to pull when, a full designer set backdrop, a Billie Holiday with a monkey on her back, a treadmill, so we better be gay now, then we'll get it, sugar.

COLE "Letter to my doctor. All the evidence for smoking's health risks isn't in, so, my voice coach said cigarettes mellow out my tone, lower my register to a rich baritone, and I'm believing him, not you. You're fired, forthwith. I'm going to Las Vegas."

But I woke up, screaming, naturally. And, I'm like a toy 8-ball, I dredge them up. "Bowdlerize" is eponymous; it is what Bowdler did to shakespeare. R.E.M. produced Eponomous, because, in a few short words that rhyme, in an era giving way to rap, some musicians and lyricists did amount to a single-minded genius between them. Thank God for recordings.

Here on the Internet, it is so bad that saying, "Cigarettes cause lung cancer", will start an argument. You have no idea who's smoking. You'll have to start now with the premise that it doesn't even smell. They can talk to you and smoke, and now they have that right because you can't smell it. All kinds of lost arguments for sane reasons are now reopened by idiodic messengers of the damned.

If you are in Australia, and you are written by a team at a bookstore, damn you! May some of you get melanoma at least, from the hole in the ozone layer. It's the best I could do.

zzzzzz what is your reluctance to tell us how may years active duty you contributed to our country? Is it perhaps that you too lacked the nads to "risk all for pussies like you"? SNAFU

More thoughts re the school: "I can't believe Obama is acting like such a dummy now that he's president."

thought#1:
"When God give man a sacred office, He generally gives him understanding [said sarcastically, we may assume--] . . .in the case of [Maximilian], before he became archbishop he was far more witty and talked less, but more sensibly. You should see him now. Stupidity oozes out of his eyes. He talkes and holds forth incessantly and always in falsetto--and he has started a goitre. In short, the fellow has changed completely." (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart--1781--Letters).

thought#2:

re Afghanistan and General McKrystal: If I were Obama, I'd keep him as far away from the white house as possible--and if that meant sending 40,000 more jobless, disaffected and violent youths to Afghanistan, such are the bloody calculations of power.

Anyone?

My service or non service is not the issue. In reference to Veterans' Day, Wagelaborer posted the following:

"It's flag waving, nationalistic, warmongering day!"

I think that is the ranting of an asshole. That is not what Veterans' Day is even remotely about. In response to this stupid posting i replied:

"It is no such thing you stupid douche-bag. It is a day of appreciation for those servicemen and women who had the fucking nads to risk all for pussies like you."

Wagelaborer is a pussy for not respecting the sacrifices of our veterans. What possible issue do you have with this sentiment?

Sorry Asshole-there's nothing in there about me at all. Like all Leftists you are a Liar and a Deciever. Oh you didn't get to the end? Well my questions were at the begining you sorry fuck. You don't answer because you can't. Answering would be an overt admission of your hatred and bigotry against Whites.

Clean the fudge of your face and hands. It's getting all over the screen and keyboard. Then go back and answer my question.

I feel that our economy has been plagued for decades by what I call the Ralph Kramden Effect, that is people obsessing over some get rich quick scheme instead of working at a job.

And business obsessing over cheapness, the bean counters alone destroyed our industrial base, all by themselves.

Harmony and Diversity? You think that Harmony comes from Diversity? Can you prove that or cite an example? It's obvious to people with room temperature IQ's that Harmony comes from Unity. I'm not saying you're stupid-just sick. Just a couple of days ago, a Black Professor at Columbia punched a White Co-Worker in the face because she disagreed with his position on White Guilt. Is that the kind of harmony you mean? A kind of "enforced" harmony with punishment for those who get out of line? But is such a thing still harmony?

In general, only Whites care about the Environmetn. I know there are individual exceptions-that's why I said in general. East Asians have a deep apreciation of Natural Beauty, but they haven't come up to the level of actually letting it get in the way of making money. The Japanese may be moving in this direction though.
As for Blacks and Hispanics-nada. Blacks wont even go in the woods-they have a genetic fear of snakes. The Parks Department has spent millions trying to get them to go camping. Luckily for us, they have shown little interest up to now. Parks in the west are full of Hispanics who are using them to grow Pot. They are not afraid of Nature, they just want to use it. Horse tripping is very big with them along with cock and dog fighting. Do you feel in Harmony with all this? You better start White Boy.

It's a little late to expel the Aliens. It would mean war at this point and that would mean the Feds-the very ones who have opened our borders. No, at this point smart White Nationalists just want to get away-Secede to Succeed. There is enough diversity among Whites to keep us all enriched forever. And every organization needs a diversity of personality types and the varied skills that they posess. But you weren't talking about any of that, as we both well know. Your Diversity is Marxist Talk-a cognitive weapon to destroy all diversity. Things are what they are because they aren't something else. Blue is blue because it isn't red. If you mix all the colors together you just get mud-is that the Diversity you want? No, to maintain diverstiy, borders must be maintained. A good painter doesn't let all the colors run together on his palette. That would just be mud-real ugly like.

DFW:
One of the things that makes Wittgenstein a real artist to me is that he realized that no conclusion could be more horrible than solipsism.
unquote

solpipsism, promulgates, minimalist, Wittgenstein, human being, reader, ...yeah, he is young.

And then you wrote back to me without acknowlegment of my finding 'Asbey-book' in Shakespeare, so now I'm contacting psychics, and, they aren't geniuses. That's what I want to know about.

JHK:

Darnit. I'm losing my mind. I thought, somewhere in this post, Kunstler says, "At the risk of being solipsistic", maybe, but I found the search, on the blog's page, and he's never used that word. I thought, "Maybe it's in the comments." No, I'm not rereading al those, and "Dale", I believe, says, "simplistic". it's just not the same word. Jim, please use "solipsism" in a sentence. Maybe craft it around that instead of "meme", which you last used in "Marching Toward Zombieland".

What the hell is solipsism, anyway? I bet it's logic, and I USE "TAUTOLOGY", first. If you can catch somebody using that, it isn't true. I mean, I'm psycic. You have to use "solipsism" for me to rhyme it and substitute "tautology". But i'm psychic, so, I'm going to guess what it is and then see what it is, as a demonstration:

SOLIPSISM

Solipsism is the philosophical idea that one's own mind is all that exists. Solipsism is an epistemological or ontological position that knowledge of anything outside the mind is unjustified. The external world and other minds cannot be known and might not exist. In the history of philosophy, solipsism has served as a skeptical hypothesis.

That's terrible. Oh, the genius kid also thinks it's terrible (see above). yeah, horrible, terrible, ..no. He's more right; actually Wittgenstein's more right (he's quoting him). TERRible is Earth-based. TERRor, however, is so played-out, it seems human-based. Kunstler uses "REALITY", as do many of his ilk on the PO sites (Life After the Oil Crash). Kunstler's theme, (uses "meme", they're so close), is, "One minor flaw in this form of thinking, reality has another trump for it". He uses "implacable", recently, in describing reality. I have to post

EPISTOMOLOGY

Epistemology (from Greek ἐπιστήμη - episteme-, "knowledge, science" + λόγος, "logos") or theory of knowledge is the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature and scope (limitations) of knowledge.[1] It addresses the questions:

What is knowledge?
How is knowledge acquired?
What do people know?
How do we know what we know?

Enjoy that. Now,

TAUTOLOGY

Tautology (rhetoric), repetition of meaning, using dissimilar words to say the same thing twice, especially where the additional words fail to provide additional clarity and meaning.
Tautology (logic), a technical notion in formal logic, universal unconditioned truth, always valid.

Message to all: Please think before posting. Don't make me come over there and descend to your level. I'm not a genius, I just channel them. don't make me impale you on the horns of a dilemma (in language transforming you into a squash).

And, Abbey, didn't I just say not to reply to me?

Obviously you did not read the link. Your gray and red squirrel metaphor is apt for what Foucault said.

And you are generalizing all over the place. Just what Foucault teaches you not to do, giving you the intellectual tools to resist the orthodox intellectual reply.

You are mainstream Jaego however much you think you are not.

Well then let's get rid of libraries, the post office, the police department (put in Blackwater), hospitals, just for starters. I have included hospitals which have loads and loads of govt funding even when private.

Start all the fuck over. Terrific.

Get a new computer and reload a terabyte of files and dig out the scratched disks and put all those programs back in action. I just tore my laptop in half like Moammar Khadafy would a telephone book.

I'm reading the hardcover of World Made By Hand. I bought it. I'm using night vision goggles. I have a heads-up display. It projects a tiny, naked, Tinkerbell over the spot on the page where my eyes are looking. I'm flying a Stealth B-2.

Reality does not act out of reason! I don't know, nor do I care, what The Age of Reason was! CIA is CIA and not "The CIA", because CIA the adjective could be you were wearing CIA pants, or standing under a CIA sign, or thinking bloody thoughts about our CIA, or it was CIA Day. You can't pin it on the CIA! What software are you using, Pascal? No, CIA. Plausible deniability, folks.

AS JHK says (twice), and I quote:

delusional. For Glen Beck and Sarah Palin it comes down to "drill, baby, drill." They know nothing about the geology of oil - they don't even believe that the earth is more than six-thousand years old, meaning they don't believe in geology, period - but they are inflamed with the faith of eight-year-old children

In the weeks leading up to it, he foreshadows this comment about Beck and Palin by mentioning Beck and Palin. He held a grudge.

As the average of global happiness decreases, you will be less happy when you read this, on average, than I was when I wrote it.

"Everything happens for a reason", not only begs the question whether it happens for a good reason, "good reason" also begs the question whether "good" means effective, or moral. If ineffectual, or moral, we are left to conclude that nonviolence is mentally defective. Because reason invokes mental health, man's inhumanity to man is brushed off, and reality is seen as (untrustworthy?) (somebody supply how people might view a reality they can't use).

I'm stumped as to how to proceed with this argument. JHK has the elements, God, reality, and, I guess, how to refute the notion that God acts out of reason. Well, the phrase "a reason" vs. "reason", vs. "reasonable", vs "equitable", vs. "fair", must give the false argument weight. Maybe it would be better in French. Maybe they don't have disdain for small words, like 'a'. Maybe they put them in, with apostrophes.

What if reality was orderly? Yeah, entropy, try searching that word on this blog. Without reality, we pretty much don't need it, but, entropy is a measure of disorder, so, if you like order and not chaos, you need to know that so does reality, and the energy shortage means that life has to get more chaotic. You are not the only thing that uses order. So do atoms. They were there ahead of you. "Law and order" is a wishful piecemeal of necessary and sufficient, of "reason-based", and "reality-based". They covered all bases when they praised that. Wouldn't it be nice? At least recognize "energy" is related to "entropy", and both are invented lately, as far as putting them to work. God was not. But, I'm preaching to the choir.

He doesn't have his own agenda, that's the point.

Dale I find it really offensive when people asstack the mental health o
